What trainers for 2024?

Lagirl20 · 25/01/2024 11:29

My Vejas look so dated now. What’s in for 2024? I’m a mum who dressed casually, looking for a staple everyday trainer.
Is big and chunky and white still in? I don’t want to get coloured trainers, though they seem to be in right now, as my wardrobe is neutral. Help! Please share your faves and what makes you’re coveting! I’ll share some links below, too

When I read this thread it reminds me how women rarely expect comfort from their shoes.
The trainer as formal wear fashion is basically women going "F*CK yeah, I want to be comfortable all the time!!"

alliancedublais · 27/01/2024 15:57

I think most women expect comfort from their shoes. Trainers have been fashionable for a long time.

Asiatoyork · 28/01/2024 02:01

Yes! They had some in men’s sizes when I last looked, not in my size though

Same. I still have the odd internet trawl but no luck :(

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 28/01/2024 03:34

I love this thread, we appear to have a time traveller who is surprised people wear fancy athletic gear as normal clothing. What will happen when she finds out about dryrobes Confused

Puravida23 · 28/01/2024 09:06

To be honest I do think it is a bit weird that high end running shoes like Hokas are now the big fashion trend. I think if you are a runner you just have that association with them being solely running shoes.
. When I have previously seen people wearing them I would have automatically assumed they were runners even if in non running gear.
Obviously that is not to say they won’t be great for walking too. They don’t self destruct if you don’t go a certain pace in them so no reason they can’t be a fashion trainer too. I guess if you haven’t got that association with running you wouldn’t think it weird just that they are a comfy trainer in bright colours. So why not

I can't stand sports gear worn as normal clothing when not doing a sport. I'm mainly thinking here though of football shirts (ok on the pitch, and at the match as a supporter or watching it in the pub on telly) but I hate tracksuits, tops or bottoms, football or rugby shirts unless you are playing the sport. That's just me though.

I want these… and no, I’m not 7 😆

I need these and I'm far from 7 😂

Surely trainers are ok though?

Chloebella · 28/01/2024 12:19

I love sketchers - they are really comfortable and I don’t think they ever go out of fashion!

KirstenBlest · 28/01/2024 12:28

@Chloebella , they're never in fashion, but there's a good reason why they're popular - they're comfortable.

Scho23 · 28/01/2024 12:55

Nothing wrong with Vejas, whole point of them is sustainability lol

Lagirl20 · 28/01/2024 13:59

fantom · 26/01/2024 12:07

OMG are you really going to buy a new pair of trainers, just because your current pair as slightly out of fashion? Shock
Do you do this every year? Confused

Where did I say this? My vejas are four years old now, and literally falling apart at the soles.

You implied it with My Vejas look so dated now. , @Lagirl20
I don't think they'll look dated, and if you got 4 years out of them that's pretty good going.

LaJoconde · 28/01/2024 15:27

I think the shoe police will be after me for sure.
I wear platform crocs.
Sport mode occasionally.
Without socks.
Oh, and they’re white.
So there. 😜

KirstenBlest · 28/01/2024 15:53

I wear regular crocs, always in relaxed mode, and did when they were deeply unfashionable. I don't wear them in public though.

Supersimkin2 · 28/01/2024 18:13

Black vejas are nice in wet weather. I’m wearing those.

BendyBusBuggy · 28/01/2024 18:29

I was looking for ages for comfortable vegan trainers to replace my staple Adidas Hamburg or handball ones. After a few failures I found these, I think they are the most comfortable trainers I've ever owned

I want those "ugly" New Balance 530s, I think they're beautiful! To me, Converse are ugly.

But then the fashion police would be after me for many things. I like the old silvery Hi-Tec trainers, remember them? Also, I don't wear "invisible" socks; I never got on with them. I prefer to wear my trainers with no socks. Yes, I know, a terrible sin.

Do you think it's weird that people wear Converse and Doc Martens too? After all they were originally basket ball shoes and workwear boots. What about Jeans?

Or do you accept those because they became standard wear years ago and just have a problem with modern change?

Are they a fashion shoe now? I had no idea! I saw someone wearing them the other day and thought they must be a runner.

I always wear Brooks now, OP. I have some for running and some for general gym wear. Very comfortable they are. I don't think they're fashionable though.

Puravida23 · 28/01/2024 19:44

Same here @swanannie . I had no idea until this thread! Apparently they are. For the first time ever I appear to be on trend . Which if you met me is a really scary proposition. I also have some brooks adrenaline trainers very comfy
I am glad I read this thread as depending on the scenario and style of the Hoka I may have quizzed the wearer on how they were to run in I now realise they may be worn by someone who just finds them comfy and likes the look of them
@splutter i haven’t got a problem plenty of people go shopping in their pyjamas which is obviously not their main purpose. And you are right jeans , donkey jackets and lots of other stuff originally had other purposes and became fashionable but a lot of the price of Hokas are tied up in the R&D for running dynamics and there are lots of inexpensive trainers which would be equally comfortable if you just want to walk in them I am just surprised non runners would pay the price just for the look and comfort.
But haven’t got a problem with it , it is their money . It is just my personal opinion that I think it is a bit weird and if I was a non runner I wouldn’t be splurging ££££ . I can barely justify it as a runner
But as I repeat only my opinion i don’t follow fashion . You can buy them for your dog as a play toy if you like I don’t care

splutter · 28/01/2024 19:48

@Puravida23 But they are not weirdly expensive for shoes by any stretch of the imagination.

Full price Airforce 1s are around £100 and Veja are around the same price as Hoka so why would it be word to buy Hoka over Veja? Hoka are by far superior to fashion shoes like Veja when it comes to comfort too

SecondHandFurniture · 28/01/2024 19:54

Of course people pay over £100 for trainers because of how they look. When I was a teenager in the late 90s it was Nike Air Max which were £80-£100 just for the kids sizes. Even bog-standard black Converse are £70ish full price. Skechers similar.

Unless you're going for an unusual colour of Reeboks from somewhere like M&MDirect for £35 there aren't loads of attractive options that will support your feet and not fall apart like a Primark special.

I'm genuinely surprised that people do this, that's all.
I find it a bit wasteful that's all, but if it makes you happy, then you do you!

I tend to wear one pair of trainers at a time and I walk a lot, they get knackered fairly quickly so I only buy when I need to - I'd say every 18 months? Sadly they don't last forever
