What do you wear to look understated sexy in your 40s or 50s?

Basically after an updated version of a previous thread from 2021. There, recomendations were about skinny jeans, silk camis, cashmere jumpers and heels.

Just wondering if things have moved on, the young 'uns seem to wesr more comfort driven androgynous styles nowadays but I'm getting ancient so don't understand if they're exactly 'sexy'.

Hiw do you tread that line?

It is more expensive than your average sweater yes. So far have purchased four different ones. Well I bought two and asked for two for Christmas and have been pretty much living in them. They wash really well and don’t have to iron which is a big plus. I just intend to add one or two pieces now every season.
Ive got cheaper leggings from my protein! I know! but they are really good quality and come in lots of different colours.

Decent bra is my main thing! I also only wear one baggy item (I do like the androgynous, looser styles on one half of my body).

Nice shoes I think go a long way too. Unattractive shoes always make me feel like crap.

I don't wear heels though as can't be doing with the discomfort!

I saw a woman who looked to be in her fifties the other day and she looked great in jean, flat shoes and a hip length coat. I was totally staring trying to work out what made it look so good 🤔. Think it was the balance between all thr lengths (the gap between jeans ans shoes and then the coat).

Please what are your favourite brands for flat attractive shoes especially the winter ones? I'm desperately looking, need a new pair for mid Feb Valentines Week!

I am a big Sézane fan. It is how you mix and match pieces. The short skirt with the high boots and a maxi jumper.

redfacebigdisgrace · 22/01/2024 20:55

Tactile fabrics- cashmere, silk, glossy hair, nice nails and glowing skin.

WhenWereYouUnderMe · 22/01/2024 21:00

This?! It's like what my gran wore in the care home to do her sitting down exercises.

@WhenWereYouUnderMe oh god that is fabulously horrendous.

I struggle to look sexy but there are times when I want to. I still wear skinny jeans because my legs are my best bit, I also have some fake leather skinny trousers.

For me to feel sexy I have to have tidy hair, I have short hair so it needs cutting often to look tidy and I colour it (I’m not ready to be grey), good underwear is also important. I don’t wear much make up and don’t have my eye brows done, though I would like too (can’t afford too).

Nutellaonall · 22/01/2024 21:27

That’s one jumper. I can on here to help. You have literally picked out the worst thing on the site to be facetious!

WhenWereYouUnderMe · 22/01/2024 21:30

It's on the top row!

Look I'm sorry, our tastes are obviously different, but in no world is beige athleisure wear sexy.

Nutellaonall · 22/01/2024 21:35

If someone posts something you don’t like the look of it’s fine. But this isn’t Aibu. No need to try and belittle someone for giving their experience.
For the record I feel pretty sexy and my DH is certainly happy since I started wearing leggings! This is the kind of thing I was talking about.

Fine fine, each to their own and all that.

@Nutellaonall I get it. Nice stuff on that website.

I have some from vivaia which I really like. I mainly bought them because they're (meant to be) eco friendly, but I also like how they look.

WhiskerPatrol · 22/01/2024 21:45

Just try to dress like one of the tamer Real Housewives. Are you hoping to attract men your own age, or to do a bit of cougaring?

coxesorangepippin · 22/01/2024 22:03

Clothes and accessories don't have to be expensive to look expensive

You can wear stuff from Sainsbury's and still look expensive, if you are slim, good skin, nice hair etc.

honeyfox · 22/01/2024 22:06

As my family always says, it's not the clothes it's the hanger 😊

redfacebigdisgrace · 22/01/2024 22:12

Being a bitch certainly isn’t sexy

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 21/01/2024 16:37

Why do you want to dress to look sexy?

I’m with you. Spend work days in jeans and sweatshirt and evenings in jodhpurs smelling vaguely of horse…. Have fucking great sex life 😂 he does occasionally complain about helping me turn out the horses… but he loves the great quads :)

redfacebigdisgrace · 22/01/2024 22:16

One of the mums I know is very sexy. She’s French. Not sure what it is… low cut tops but more of a flash than really obvious. Confident. Long hair , very natural beauty.. Great jewellery. Hard to pin it down! Literally a certain “je ne sais quoi “😂

BigSkies2022 · 23/01/2024 08:16

@TurquoiseTurtoise - I like O'Keeffe for fairly classic flats. I have the Alice double monk strap and can recommend that for comfort and style - they always get compliments. Otherwise it's good old Russell & Bromley. People rate Grensons as well, but I can't offer any personal experience of them.

Nutellanjam · 23/01/2024 08:23

My new addition to this is discovering gel nails - I’m now aiming to get gel nails done every 3 weeks - not fake ones on talon nails but just the liquid gel on mid length, shaped nails. It’s brilliant as never chips and stays on for ages, plus I love looking down at nicely varnished nails ( after years of horrible broken off too soon, not shaped etc)

Yes, agree with this you can look stylish without spending loads, I've met women who've spent a fortune on their appearance and they've just not got it right. Whereas others look very stylish and elegant on a faction of the budget.

Payakan · 23/01/2024 08:25

@redfacebigdisgrace One thing I have noticed about the French is that they tend to stay the same size for years, so they can buy good quality pieces, not high street, and they will last for years.
Confidence will also make you sexy.

I would say The real Housewives (of Cheshire) are in the main (there are one or 2 exceptions and I don't watch it regularly) examples of women who have oodles of money but no idea how to dress stylishly - again they all want to look like 20 year olds - too much make-up, too much bling, too much flesh on show,

I have no idea what posters are on about by "looking sexy". The thread seems to be the more concerned with expensive clothes/grooming ; or alternatively just clothes you feel good wearing/ enjoy wearing.

Everything I own is clothes I enjoy wearing and make me feel good otherwise I wouldn't have bought them. I've never equated that to mean "sexy".

Each to their own of course but the clothes on that Varley website would make me depressed wearing them.
