Sports socks over leggings trend - I have questions!

CroccyWoccy · 14/01/2024 16:36

Everyone seems to be wearing sports socks pulled up over gym leggings now.

-Is this just an athileisure ccasual trend or are people who actually go to the gym wearing socks pulled up over their leggings?

-I generally see this people wearing white trainers and white socks over black/dark leggings. Can you style this with other coloured trainers and socks? What does/doesn't work?

Should I just stick to my short trainer socks and ignore this trend or is it here to stay?

Is this a thing again? Who'd have thought my mum would have been 30 years ahead of a fashion trend 😂

mynameiscalypso · 14/01/2024 16:38

Is this a trend I didn't know about?! I've mainly been doing it recently because it's so bloody cold and my ankles have been freezing. I thought it looked silly (but warm) but I'm totally going to style it out now.

ProfessorPeppy · 14/01/2024 16:38

The trend is unfortunately here to stay.

Despite ‘90s fashion being the thing at the moment, everyone is fully embracing the white sports socks look, which would have been social death throughout the ‘90s due to overexposure in the ‘80s!

I haven’t succumbed…yet.

mynameiscalypso · 14/01/2024 16:39

Oh, my socks (and trainers) are black. Maybe I'm not cool after all.

CharmedCult · 14/01/2024 16:40

It's a trend which my chilly ankles would be fully embracing if I ever wore gym leggings.

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 14/01/2024 16:44

How bizarre, thankfully not seen it around here.

though I have been contemplating re living my 'fame' years & knitting some leg warmers! (Live in leggings)

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 14/01/2024 16:48

I’ve been doing this for ages. I joke with DH that I started the trend 😂. I also like wearing fluffy socks with thick autumn coloured sports leggings that don’t look sporty if that makes sense, flat brown boots and a snuggly jumper.

KissTheRains · 14/01/2024 16:48

I see tons of the girls of the college wearing white Nike shoes and Nike socks pulled up over their legging bottoms.
I really like when the shoes and socks are white and the leggings are a single darker colour like red or grey. I don't like when they wear nude leggings as they look like they're naked on the bottom half.

I don't like leggings, but I do wear white Skechers, socks and cuffed joggers. 😁

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 14/01/2024 16:50

Oh and when I go to the gym, I wear shorts but still my Nike sports socks. I love a good pair of socks!

TokyoSushi · 14/01/2024 16:56

It's mahoosive around here(NW), and so comfortable!!

Most do wear white but I wear black Nike socks and black trainers to be a bit more understated!!

At my gym, probably only about 5% of people (all under 25) dress like this though, so it's definitely a leisure thing!

GreenTuftyFlowers · 14/01/2024 17:37

I'm mystified. How high do the socks go - knee length, mid shin or just over ankle bone? (If the latter that sounds v practical and therefore I might try it.)

bobomomo · 14/01/2024 17:39

It's a trend and it looks ghastly! Sliders rather than trainers seems to be the young person look de jour. thankfully the weather will warm in a few weeks and hopefully the trend setters will adopt a better look for next year

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/01/2024 17:40

@GreenTuftyFlowers the teenagers around here are wearing the white socks mid leg length (not ankle socks and not knee grazers) but the black leggings and white sock combo are paired with dark plastic sliders …..

(it’s horrible)

GreenTuftyFlowers · 14/01/2024 17:43

@Alphabet1spaghetti2 Thanks - oh that does sound grim. Not trying it then!

NotmySundaybest · 14/01/2024 17:44

Or with crocs!

Dreemhouse · 14/01/2024 17:47

I pretty much live in gym leggings and often wear this. It’s comfortable and avoids a sock line showing under the bottom of my leggings. Each to their own though, I know some people don’t like it. I’m also not under 25 😄

ExtremelyJoyous · 14/01/2024 17:49

I love it for casual wear or winter walks. I don’t think there are set colours but I wear white or grey socks with white Vejas or black Nikes. I only have black leggings but I’ve actually just ordered some burgundy and navy ones!

For the gym I just wear normal trainer socks.

Divebar2021 · 14/01/2024 17:53

I would say the majority of the younger girls in my gym are wearing this and have been for some time. I’m seeing fewer ruched butt leggings / shorts also.

Nyancat · 14/01/2024 18:06

I love it, cosy ankles, I've been freezing for years!

ReadyForSeason · 14/01/2024 18:53

I have fully embraced this trend this year but very specific socks, with round stripes around them. I put on all black leggins, puffer coat, black Nike Pegasus with white ticks and white fleece lined hat with a huge pom pom. The socks, the joy of this outfit are black with white stripes or white with black stripes. I feel cosy, deliberate and warm in this kit running errands, walking along the canal or nipping out to shops.

disappearingfish · 14/01/2024 19:03

Here the girls wear sports sock over their tights with their school uniform. If they can't get away with white they wear black with the white Nike brand showing. It look dreadful imo 😀

LaCuntiatta · 14/01/2024 19:07

It's a big thing for the secondary school where I work. The head has tried to ban white socks over tights as a result. Still see it around though.

I also agree that the white socks under shitty plastic sliders looks awful (to me, but I'm ancient)

LaCuntiatta · 14/01/2024 19:07

Ancient = ancient compared to the students

Leg warmers are very in according to my teen. She wears some over her Uggs ultra minis.
