Sports socks over leggings trend - I have questions!

CroccyWoccy · 14/01/2024 16:36

Everyone seems to be wearing sports socks pulled up over gym leggings now.

-Is this just an athileisure ccasual trend or are people who actually go to the gym wearing socks pulled up over their leggings?

-I generally see this people wearing white trainers and white socks over black/dark leggings. Can you style this with other coloured trainers and socks? What does/doesn't work?

Should I just stick to my short trainer socks and ignore this trend or is it here to stay?

Oh, I'm excited to hear leg warmers are in! I used to love those.

NahHumBrag · 14/01/2024 19:18

I’m a daily gym goer and I do this when working out / wearing gym clothes. I’m in my 50’s too. I LOVE the look!

It’s also comfortable and gives additional support to the ankle (if wearing proper gym socks).

sallyop · 14/01/2024 19:35

Some of us are ruching our sports socks, over the leggings, slightly like leg warmers Blush

Coloured or white sport socks. All colours of trainers - usually running trainers for non athleisure wear.

sallyop · 14/01/2024 19:35

Sweaty Betty or non branded (no logo) sports socks. Not Nike or anything like that.

I've noticed more people wearing them in ballet classes too.

Skyellaskerry · 14/01/2024 19:37

I happen to wear my Nordic socks over leggings with walking boots, does that count? Am I suddenly sort of on trend?!

scrivette · 14/01/2024 19:41

The schools Mum's have been wearing these since last winter, I wasn't sure at first but really like it now. Usually Nike or GymShark socks.

MammaTo · 14/01/2024 19:50

It’s a trend my ankles are very happy about, but I do tend to wear it as like a daytime casual/park/walking outfit.
If I go the gym I still wear ankle socks because I don’t like the feeling of them while exercising.

decisionssmecisions · 14/01/2024 19:52

surely this trend is on the way out as it’s mainstream now. I hate it

decisionssmecisions · 14/01/2024 19:59

i do love them with shorts & tanned legs a la Princess Di though but you need the legs for them.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 14/01/2024 20:04

My 12yo daughter wears Nike pro leggings with black crocs and fluffy socks or sometimes sports socks.

Mossstitch · 14/01/2024 20:04

Everything goes full circle.......I did this in the 80s but usually thick boot socks baggy around the ankles with DMs, was very cosy🤔 wondering if 60+ woman could get away with it🤣

Spicybeanburger · 14/01/2024 20:09

I wear this because it's cold with thermal leggings but have done for a long time! I'm not sure you need to think about it that much. Just wear what you have already or think looks good.

I do see other people wearing this but honestly I think it's such a casual thing I didn't realise anyone particularly thought about it.

RazorstormUnicorn · 14/01/2024 20:25

I was delighted to spot many women at my gym doing this and I have copied with relief and my feet are warmer. However I don't think I quite have the right colour socks and shoes but I'm not going to buy new trainers just to fit in!

This, fleece lined leggings with thick thermal socks in contrasting colours, (worn over my normal socks), hiking style. I'm in my 50s, don't much care what it looks like, so long as I'm warm.

ElevenSeven · 14/01/2024 20:29

No idea about fashion, but I LOVE that proper socks are back. Cosy feet all winter!

TheChosenTwo · 14/01/2024 20:31

I’ve been doing this for years!
When I go to the actual gym though I change to sports socks as my feet get too hot 😂 but cold exposed ankles set my teeth on edge just seeing them, I have a fear they once your ankles are cold the rest of you is cold so I keep mine covered.
I’m not trendy though, I can assure you of that.

WhatsitWiggle · 14/01/2024 20:32

I spotted this at my gym and embraced it - my 50yo ankles are much happier being warm!

If I'm spotted wearing this other than at the gym, it's because I'm on my way or just finished.

florenceandthemac · 14/01/2024 20:35

I live in this at the minute 🫣
I have a rotation of white sports socks with various coloured logos, but yes it only looks ok with my two pairs of white New Balance 530s.
It's not quite right with my On running trainers that are black and white (mainly black) but I couldn't work out why at first...

I do wear this look for the gym sometimes, only for strength workouts.
I get so hot exercising that I need less layers really

florenceandthemac · 14/01/2024 20:37

Oh and I'm mid 30s

holjam · 14/01/2024 20:45

In my 40's and do this right now going to the gym or for walks as it's so cold.

NahHumBrag · 14/01/2024 20:50

I do actually have another reason for it aside from fashion…

I often take my trainers off to lift weights and wear proper sports socks as they’re thicker than trainer socks (usually) and give a better ‘grip’ to the floor. I don’t like them all bunched up round my ankles, so I pull them up.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 14/01/2024 21:01

Guilty 🙋🏻‍♀️

Black leggings, grey oversized hoody and crew socks - but I don't wear them pulled right up. I pull them up, and then tug them down slightly at the ankle so that they are a bit ruched.
Worn with Nike air force 1's, white hi top converse, or occasionally ultra mini Uggs.

Comfort is key for me

DragonmotherKhaleesi · 14/01/2024 21:02

I feel like I need to get on board with this! I'm 40 and still wearing skinny jeans and docs. Leggings with socks and trainers sound bliss. Can someone point me in the right direction please?
What coats are we wearing? Jumpers? I've lost 4 stone over the last year and I'm still trying to figure out what to wear.
