Do you own/wear a real fur coat?

Can I ask you a few questions?

Is it vintage and does it keep you warmer than a normal coat?

I did until it was eaten by moth and I was so so upset. It was my grandmothers, so yes vintage; it was crazy warm, I’ve never owned a warmer coat.

WolvesDiscoandBoogaloo · 13/01/2024 22:51

I don't own one but I've worn a few.

Yes, they keep you significantly warmer than other coats. Possibly a bit too warm if the weather is milder. It feels a bit like walking around in a sleeping bag.

All the ones I've worn have been vintage. If you're thinking of getting one, be wary that they can be quite delicate when they're old. I've seen them just split open in places.

DaftyLass · 13/01/2024 22:51

I wear a fur hat and mitts, definitely warner

Sumsummer · 13/01/2024 22:53

So they can be thinner than a faux fur coat but will keep you warmer, or does it need to be thick?

No, they don't need to be thick. The material makes a cocoon against the cold, so it's very different to fake fur.

I have my grandmas, it’s about 60 yrs old, keeps me very warm

claracluck1978 · 13/01/2024 23:07

I have 2 but haven't worn them for a couple of winters. They are both mink & circa 1950 so def vintage. So much warmer than faux fur & although I would never buy a new one, they must be better worn than thrown in the tip & replaced with plastic 'fur' that will never biodegrade

Next winter I may have lost the 2 dress sizes to be able to wear them again!

Whataretheodds · 13/01/2024 23:14

I have worn one (vintage) and it was incredibly warm.

Noseyoldcow · 13/01/2024 23:15

My mum had fur coats. Sadly, fur coats do not flatter me. - I actually look like a bear wearing one. Didn't think you could wear real fur these days anyway, even antique, for fear of getting red paint chucked at you. But I can vouch that real fur is seriously good for keeping the cold out - my mum was snug in Canadian winter temperatures. I'm talking minus 35 plus windchill here. No wonder polar bears wear them!

chopinwaltz26 · 13/01/2024 23:32

I have a fur coat that I bought on eBay around 2004 or so. It is a bit too big for me, but totally brilliant on skiing holidays for off-piste wear or as an evening coat.
I wouldn't necessarily wear it at home as I have a duvet coat for cold weather and the fur one is REALLY warm. The big advantage over the duvet coat is that I can wear it to drive in as it is not "bulky".

Filamumof9 · 13/01/2024 23:34

I have own(ed) and worn für coats, some vintage and some newly bought. Do not wear them now regularly as I live in the Caribbean. However, reason for me to wear and buy was indeed their warmth. I could not get a coat that was warm enough for me. The fur coats were mink and rabbit. I still have the mink if I travel to colder climates as I am absolutely horrible with cold weather.

FinallyHere · 13/01/2024 23:35

I have worn two, a short mink jacket a friend leant me when they had out in weight so that it did not fit them and my mother's full length fox fur.

As PP have confirmed, real fur is extremely warm. In cold weather I have been very warm wearing just fur over a skimpy evening gown. Again in very cold weather I went to a Carol
Concert in a very old, v v cold cathedral. All the others in our group were uncomfortably cold and refused to ever go again. I was very comfortable in my furs.

The two I have kept are both extremely flattering to my figure. I have tried on many others which were cut differently and emphatically did not flatter my shape.

I strongly recommend wearing 'vintage' and would not buy new. I'd always been careful about where I have worn them , probably would not risk public transport in case someone objected. I can see the argument about the 'first owner' giving up their coat only unwillingly but feel that that is not important for furs with more than one previous owner. .

Sockmate123 · 13/01/2024 23:38

I wear one which was given to me after my grandmother passed away. It was her aunt's coat so true vintage. I wear it from time to time because its vintage but I wouldn't support fur trade now for ethical reasons. I was surprised how warm real fur is.

WeneedSamVimesonthecase · 13/01/2024 23:39

I wish I'd kept my grandma's. She was very proud of it, and it had meant a lot to my grandad to be able to afford to buy it for her.

She had wanted to pass it on to my mum or me, but we both refused it for ethical reasons. Think it went to charity in the end.

Now I'm older and hopefully wiser, I'd wear it and be grateful for the warmth.

KeeeeeepDancing · 13/01/2024 23:42

Yes real fur is very warm. Fake fur is just polyester, to remain in landfill for forever.
None really knows what real fur looks or feels like any more. If you have a real one and want to wear it, just say it's fake.

bellsbuss · 13/01/2024 23:47

I have a real one and it's beautiful, it belonged to my mum and she bought it 63 years ago.

Filamumof9 · 13/01/2024 23:48

True, hardly anyone expects it to be real fur. I noticed that only older persons in the fashion sector really saw the difference. There are currently fake fur coats that look very real, that was much different about 15 years ago.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 13/01/2024 23:48

You will never wear anything warmer than real fur. Logical really as nature covers animals in fur to keep them warm. I have worn fur in the past but would be reluctant to do so now. I’ve always felt incredibly glam while wearing fur. I recently saw a rail of fur coats in a thrift store in New Hampshire. They were all types of colours and different furs. I was so tempted but couldn’t bring myself to buy one but still think of them longingly.

StarlightLady · 13/01/2024 23:56

Some so called imported “faux fur” on the market is cat and dog fur in reality. It’s called “faux fur” to attract a wider market.

SoOutingWhoCares · 14/01/2024 00:38

I bought a ski jacket in the USA in the mid 00s which had black "faux" fur panels on it.

I was stroking it absentmindedly and thought, "this feels just like my cat" and stopped in horror.

I looked at the label. 100% rabbit. Made in China. I felt sick. I've had pet rabbits and pet cats and it felt like the latter. I was so shocked that they were selling real fur, pretty cheaply, in a shopping mall in a popular shop (Karen Millen/Reiss type place).

Could never wear it again. It was very warm though. I'd get very sweaty.

I have friends who wear vintage mink and fox. I only know because they told me. Could easily pass for faux and the animals died the best part of a century ago so they don't feel guilty.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 14/01/2024 01:15

Decades ago I had one which was decades old then. It wasn't as warm as non fur coats are. It was heavy and if it was wet was quite unpleasant wearing a wet dead animal.

Now, whilst I obviously wouldn't throw paint over someone wearing one (because I'd get arrested and lose my livelihood) I do judge people who wear them.

I don't think it makes the slightest difference now to how vile fur is whether it's vintage or new. It's not cool.

Sorry but that's nonsense.

They don't "flatter" any one. Be in no doubt the living animal looked a gazillion times better than you or any other women wearing real fur.
