Do you own/wear a real fur coat?

Can I ask you a few questions?

Is it vintage and does it keep you warmer than a normal coat?

Sorry pressed send too soon
Where fir and hide etc is a byproduct from the food industry then i feel ok - every part is being utilised
At least nothing is wasted but to kill just for a skin?? Nah not for me

Grilledsquid · 14/01/2024 08:09

I skinned rabbits. You can't skin them alive. There would be so much damage to the fur. It's absolutely illogical to try to skin something alive when planning to sell the fur.

Voltefarce · 14/01/2024 08:11

Yes and yes. I have three vintage fur coats (two rabbit, one fox), plus a mink stole. They are beautiful.

Don't sit on the fence tell us what you really think.

Seriously though people here are mainly talking old fur coats left to them by relatives.

You have me worried. I have a faux fur gilet which people often ask/challenge me about as it really does look and feel like rabbit.

Any tips on how I could tell for sure?

I only know what l read, l don’t pretend to be an expert, but this might help.

Real Fur Is Being Sold As Faux Fur—Here's How You Can Spot The Difference

It's an issue, faux real.

I have a mole jacket, almost a century old, from a relative. Moles were , (and are still ) killed as garden pests and in the earlier part of the 20th century people would then sell the skins. It feels and looks a lot like thick velvet. I only really wear it to do gardening on cold days. The moles in my garden are left well alone !

FindingMeno · 14/01/2024 08:25

I judge the lack of moral compass with people who wear fur.
Yes, even you people who wear those hats with massive rabbit fur pom poms on them.
There is no place for it.
I thought we knew better by now.

Do you even have any😂
This gives bit of a warning them vibes.
"Smell this coat? Fuck up my garden and you will become another"

@FindingMeno I find that people who make sweeping generalisations lack understanding of subtlety and complexity, especially when it comes to morality.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/01/2024 08:31

I have an acquaintance that works for a university and disposes of all the items left behind by foreign students. I get a lot of designer clothing and shoes, and have a Mr and Mrs Italy parka coat that is fur lined with a big fur hood. It is very warm, too warm. Poor thing is now double wrapped in black bin bags and stored in my attic. Can’t sell it (I don’t think?) and I don’t want to chuck it.

mouseychick · 14/01/2024 08:31

I don't wear real or fake fur. Its disgusting to want to look like you've skinned an animal.

ImaginaryCat · 14/01/2024 08:31

To those of you looking for ways to dispose of fur coats ethically, when I inherited 2 I took them to the homeless shelter. For people sleeping on the streets they would keep them amazingly warm. That also felt like a nice F you to the person who left them to me, who had always argued with me about why she was justified in owning them.

Thisbastardcomputer · 14/01/2024 08:47

I have a beautiful vintage black mink jacket which was left to me, it's a designer that is still in business.

It's two sizes too small but come the day when it fits I will wear it, but winters aren't as cold as they used to be.

gano · 14/01/2024 08:55

I have a very old fur coat. It was my mum's, but she never wore it and think it was passed on to her at some point in the 70s. I don't wear it out, but I have worn it around the house when the weather's been cold and I haven't wanted to put on the heating. I also have some leather gloves that are lined with fur. They belonged to my exh's nan and I do wear them, because they're so warm. I personally wouldn't buy anything new that made of fur.

Fifthtimelucky · 14/01/2024 09:01

I have never, and would never, wear fur, real or otherwise.

In my view wearing fake fur and vintage fur is almost as bad as wearing new real fur because it helps to perpetuates the myth that fur is glamorous and therefore encourages the trade.

I do however wear sheepskin (which is also wonderfully warm), along with other leather. Perhaps that's hypocritical, but sheep and cows are kept mainly for their meat and/or milk and, once they have been killed, I think it makes sense to use as much of the animal as possible.

Sumsummer · 14/01/2024 09:19

Well if you are against fur I wouldn't recommend giving them to animal rescue s as they sell them on to the public. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325959805640?hash=item4be4b7eac8:g:VOsAAOSwXoNlR2YJ

I have never worn fur but would if it was vintage and looked good. I wear sheepskin boots and eat meat and dairy products.

I don't think anyone could tell the difference. I have never looked at a furry jacket on someone and wondered if it was real.

I can tell real fur, I’m 46 and remember all the campaigning in the 80s to stop the fur trade.

The conditions the animals are kept in and the skinning alive is just wrong.

Sheep aren’t skinned alive, it only works on small animals we can overpower with brute force.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 14/01/2024 09:57

SaturdayGiraffe · 14/01/2024 08:05

Fur, no.

Sheepskin, yes.

Yes I agree with this, I'm eating the insides so why not use the outside too.

I wouldn't wear fur because I don't like how it looks, but I wouldn't be against wearing secondhand because I DO believe in buying secondhand and using things until they break. Lots of people are rightly following this principle because reducing consumption is the best thing we can do to avoid the climate emergency.

joinmeordie · 14/01/2024 10:59

I inherited my mother's grey mink coat - it's around 50/60 years old. It has hung unworn in storage for years but as I am currently unwell, with a compromised immune system (due to chemotherapy), and it is really cold, I have started to wear it. It is as warm as it is beautiful. A friend of mine commented that it is the most beautiful thing she has ever seen.

Would I buy a real fur coat now? No, of course not. But I do like the look of fur, I always have, I guess it reminds me of my mother. I have a lovely Shrimps faux fur but it's not a fraction as warm or as beautiful as my mother's mink coat. Now I've finally started to wear it, will continue to wear it for a long as I can.

LameBorzoi · 14/01/2024 11:56

@FormerlyPathologicallyHappy I'm doubtful that animals are skinned alive, except in extreme deliberate cruelty or other circumstances. Have you ever handled a fox, a ferret, or even a rabbit? It's impossible enough to even give that type of animal medication, let alone do something delicate like skinning!

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 14/01/2024 12:00

Mary1986 · 14/01/2024 07:45

I wear fur coats and they are fabulous in cold weather - when it's below 2 degrees the fur "puffs up" on them and they help stop you getting too hot or too cold.

I tell people mine are fake to stop any judgement and I'll have them for next 60 years hopefully and pass them to my children so very sustainable.

Just a question for anti fur posters on here - do you wear leather?

Because if killed and sourced ethically fur is no different - leather is not a by product of the meat industry and its much better for the environment than awful plastic faux fur.

The life of an animal bred for fur is a misery from start to finish. There's no such thing as "ethical fur".

I see this thread has got worse.

Pancakeorcrepe · 14/01/2024 12:09

I can tell real fur from faux fur, so if you’re wandering round telling people your coat is faux fur but you’re wearing real fur, it will be glaringly obvious.
I do not and would never wear fur. My grandmother and mother have tried to pass me on theirs and I refused; it’s not an excuse to wear this just because you have inherited it.
I feel sorry for anyone so ignorant and callous to wear fur and make excuses about it. You are not a kind or a good person and this is the truth.

viccat · 14/01/2024 12:10

No. I'm in my 40s and remember the anti fur trade campaigns well. My mum and grandma both had fur coats, I don't think mum wears her any longer though. I remember the coats as heavy and never liked the look of them anyway.

I do wear leather but the industries are completely different compared to mink and foxes living in tiny cages.

Pancakeorcrepe · 14/01/2024 12:11

@Mary1986 I hope your children grow up to be more caring and kind than you and don’t accept your lovely gift of pre-worn dead animals who suffered just so you could play princesses.

You should try Googling it. The animals are stunned first so they can be skinned alive. There are videos out there showing the animals dying - not before, not during, but after their skins have been pulled off.
