Do you own/wear a real fur coat?

Can I ask you a few questions?

Is it vintage and does it keep you warmer than a normal coat?

OP posts:
LenaLamont · 14/01/2024 12:22

They are insanely warm. My mother’s full length coat kept her warm at -28°C.

When she died, no one wanted it, no charity locally would take it so it hangs in a cupboard tempting children to Narnia, only to disappoint.

Pancakeorcrepe · 14/01/2024 12:23

@FormerlyPathologicallyHappy you are very misinformed. It is a well known technique used because it benefits the quality of the fur and the money they can get for it. It’s all about the money! But you are right that it is extremely cruel. If you are going to wear fur, you should be more well informed about the provenance and the process. Obviously the farms and companies making a lot of money out of this industry will not be the correct sources of information. Why do you think
people are so against it? The only interest of anti-fur people is the wellfare of the animals. There is literally no other agenda.

Grilledsquid · 14/01/2024 12:24

Just to point out animals/fish etc twitch for few minutes after death. We had fish once trashing around after it was gutted and head was off. We had similar with rabbits. Which is what I am assuming some if the videos show (some will be genuine cruelty though).

LauderSyme · 14/01/2024 12:24

Oh God, I want to cry and vomit reading these.

I learned about bear bile farms not that long ago. Humans are fucking psychopathic.

A family member lost the plot or something when they went to Iceland (the country not the shop!) and brought home reindeer skins to throw on the sofa. I don't even want to sit on them. Barf.

OldTinHat · 14/01/2024 12:27

You've just reminded me that my DM bought one in the 70s, she'd coveted one for years. No idea what happened to it.

I can tell real fur from faux fur, so if you’re wandering round telling people your coat is faux fur but you’re wearing real fur, it will be glaringly obvious.
I do not and would never wear fur. My grandmother and mother have tried to pass me on theirs and I refused; it’s not an excuse to wear this just because you have inherited it.
I feel sorry for anyone so ignorant and callous to wear fur and make excuses about it. You are not a kind or a good person and this is the truth.

If it was that glaringly obvious, there wouldn't be a link on this thread about how to spot the difference.

Raindeer are eaten there. In principle it's no different to cow/pig/sheep leather and skins.

No. It's not twitching. It's them writhing around in pain for too long a time. If you don't believe it, go watch for yourself. The countries who farm skins aren't concerned about animal cruelty. Their only concern is the quality of the "materials" they can harvest.

So what - this is still true

YouJustDoYou · 14/01/2024 12:29

I inherited one a long time ago and before it was eaten by moths yes, they are very warm. I also have some friends from extremely cold countries where faux fur/manmade clothing isn't warm enough to protect them so their hats they brought with them to the UK etc are real fur.

YouJustDoYou · 14/01/2024 12:30

I remember once at Uni this girl from Germany had a literal stuffed little baby fox wrapped around her neck as a scarf. It was so gruesome.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 14/01/2024 12:34

to be fair if you're going to eat meat venison is the most ethical you'll find. Wild venison is from either controlled culling or permitted shooting - in either case the animal was free until the moment it died. Farmed deer cannot be farmed intensively.

OldTinHat · 14/01/2024 12:38

LameBorzoi · 14/01/2024 11:56

@FormerlyPathologicallyHappy I'm doubtful that animals are skinned alive, except in extreme deliberate cruelty or other circumstances. Have you ever handled a fox, a ferret, or even a rabbit? It's impossible enough to even give that type of animal medication, let alone do something delicate like skinning!

There are many sickening videos online of live animals being skinned for their pelts. It's absolutely vile.

Yeah. Venison is really good. Raindeer are also not farmed afaik in Iceland, Norway or Sweden.

@Grilledsquid "Reindeer are eaten there. In principle it's no different to cow/pig/sheep leather and skins".

I know. Relative came home burbling about traditional Icelandic artisanal methods. I think she could have appreciated learning about their customs yet foregone buying two of the damn things.

No, that's your opinion.

Making use of unethically produced vintage clothes is sensible, in my opinion. There's hardly much morality in a pair of £5 Primark shoes made by children that will shortly need to be thrown into landfill.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/01/2024 13:04

ScribeSev · 14/01/2024 06:57

That's just never going to happen here in the UK

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

https://gb.maxmara.com/v/real-fur-coats

Canada Goose seem to have forgotten about going fur free.

https://www.canadagoose.com/uk/en/carson-parka-heritage-3805M.html?_gl=1qxmaho_upMQ.._gaMTc1NzQ4MzY3Ni4xNzA1MjM3MTUy_ga_B17PNGSYWG*MTcwNTIzNzE1My4xLjAuMTcwNTIzNzE1My4wLjAuMA..

It'll be marketed as plastic free/eco friendly and eventually, we'll be back to it available everywhere.

Nice bit of whataboutery there.

My opinion is that anyone wearing and trying to justify the wearing of fur lacks any moral compass or empathy.

My opinion is that anyone who thinks they look fabulous in real fur is vain, shallow and delusional.

My opinion is that a real fur coat is the ugliest, nastiest, most unflattering piece of clothing you could possibly pick.

Ugly trainers, so called "Mum boots" Amish dresses, skinny jeans, shapeless sacks and anything else which gets pulled to pieces on here ? No contest, they all are objects of desire compared to the unmitigated ugliness of real fur and its wearers.

m00ngirl · 14/01/2024 13:10

Psychopaths, gather here! Horrendous.

Grumpsy · 14/01/2024 13:28

I always find the topic of fur incredibly hypocritical. If you’re happy to wear leather, what’s the difference with fur where the rest of the animal is being used, or if they are the byproduct of culling (yes I’m thinking of kings guard bearskins - the animals will be killed regardless, may as well use their pelts).

FayCarew · 14/01/2024 13:29

My housemates wear them all the time, in all weathers.
They lick them clean.

Alas for your hypothesis, I actually do look fabulous in any kind of fur coat.

Yes. Eating veal is bad because ickle baby calves are cute but eating beef or drinking milk is ok.

Killing foxes is bad because cute little foxes but killing rats is ok.
