Do you own/wear a real fur coat?

Can I ask you a few questions?

Is it vintage and does it keep you warmer than a normal coat?

You'll get deleted for saying that and I'll get deleted for quoting you. But you're right.

There's nothing attractive about real fur.

My mum had fur coats. Sadly, fur coats do not flatter me. - I actually look like a bear wearing one. Didn't think you could wear real fur these days anyway, even antique, for fear of getting red paint chucked at you. But I can vouch that real fur is seriously good for keeping the cold out - my mum was snug in Canadian winter temperatures. I'm talking minus 35 plus windchill here. No wonder polar bears wear them!

Real fur only flatters the living creature wearing it 🙄🙄🙄

foxlover47 · 14/01/2024 01:24

Would never be seen dead wearing real fur , we take too much from animals as it is

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/01/2024 01:25

Personally , I wouldn't wear fur . I don;t wear silk , suede , wool, feather , down or leather either .

The reason it keeps its original owner warm is the animals blood supply to the skin will create internal warmth that is trapped by the insulation of the fur standing (like goodbumps) and trapping the heat . Which won;t happen if a person wears it as there's a lining .

But at the end of the day , the animal isn;t going to be asking for it back .

Some so called imported “faux fur” on the market is cat and dog fur in reality. It’s called “faux fur” to attract a wider market.

You can tell real fur a mile off 🙄

Gowlett · 14/01/2024 01:28

I have one. Vintage, I didn’t buy it. Only wore it once.

Probably because it's died a slow lingering death for some sad scrote wearing it
Hardly in a position to ask for it back 🙄

Not just a horrible death but an inhumane life too (well exsistance , it;s not a life)
And these are animals that aren't food chain .
Mink. sable, fox, squirrel . Not eaten , just kept for fur .

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 14/01/2024 01:31

There are some really horrible posts on this thread. It's depressing and disappointing that women still think wearing fur is cool.

And as for the "oh it's so warm" there are plenty of better options which don't involve torturing an animal.

QueenBitch666 · 14/01/2024 01:33

Bear skins. Bears are fed broken glass so as not to damage their pelt
Just imagine the fucking agony of their death
Humans are seriously beyond hope

QueenBitch666 · 14/01/2024 01:34

Humans are inherently vile. Some of the posts on here are ignorant at best, psychopathic at worse. Where TF is your moral compass 😡

mapleriver · 14/01/2024 01:59

I have a fox and a mink fur jacket, not the long ones they're too much for me in this climate 😀I only wear my mink if I'm going somewhere naice incase I get egged by a hippy, my fox fur is a lovely pale blush pink so looks more like fake fur and I wear it more casually, but I do love the extra look. They're VERY warm, but you shouldn't wear it in the rain because you need to treat them with care and can't dry them like you would a normal coat. They also need to be stored carefully to keep them looking nice, and professionally cleaned once a year ideally.

Don't really understand the ethical qualms around it, my fur will last me a lifetime vs an artificial material, I'd only accept a telling off from a petless militant vegan who doesn't use a mobile phone that's made out of minerals mined by children.

Unless I was in a parallel universe in a Siberian gulag, I would not be able to bring myself to wear a real fur coat, even a vintage one. I would feel like I was wearing a murder.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/01/2024 02:14

I wear a coat that has a filling made from recycled plastic bottles . Correct me if I'm wrong but none of those bottles had an electrode up its rectum and skinned alive .

And don't give me the vegan cop out .

If you want to eat meat , wear fur or use cosmetics tested on animals then crack on.
But there's a difference between eating mince and eating fois gras. Both died but the goose after a vile life.

There is something very "Look At Me" with real fur almost like goading for a reaction

WolvesDiscoandBoogaloo · 14/01/2024 02:24

I don't see what's so ethical about leaving them to rot in a cupboard over wearing them. The animals are already dead and have been for decades. Leaving them to fall to pieces is just senseless at this point.

I wouldn't commission a new one to be made for me. But absolutely I will wear a fifty year old fur coat if it's available to me in Baltic temperatures. Sue me.

mapleriver · 14/01/2024 02:27

@70isaLimitNotaTarget Skinning an animal alive wouldn't be great for fur, it would undo the whole purpose of electrocution which is done to preserve the fur. If you tried skinning a predator alive it would thrash and ruin the pelt. The skinning alive video is from an Asian country and it's up in the air whether it was even real or whether it was paid for by animal rights activists. My fur is Danish and I'd never buy Asian fur.

I'd also say the cow had a vile life for what it's worth, nobody needs to eat red meat but it's a luxury just like fur is. I tell people my fur is fake, I just love how big and plush it is. I suppose it's a pick your poison type of thing, I don't eat meat but find people eating meat multiple times a week quite disgusting but I don't call people cruel for it.

Myhubbyisasweetheart · 14/01/2024 02:34

@KeeeeeepDancing

I was a vegetarian / vegan proper yonks ago, and I remember being on holiday in Iceland and my ex lost me in a shop.

He found me in the corner rubbing myself against all the artic fox fur coats 🤣

I've always been far more relaxed about fur than meat as in super cold countries (I'm in one now actually, not the UK) they really do have a purpose. I think some people just see fur as cruel and leather okay, and I just don't get the distinction at all

To anyone interested, Iceland cull artic foxes and the fur is a by product of that

GrimDamnFanjo · 14/01/2024 02:37

I can't bear the sensation of real fur when I've touched it. Makes me shudder.
I suppose eventually there won't be many vintage furs left.
I wanted to buy a fluffy Pom Pom hat a couple of years back on Amazon. Gave up in the end as the vendors were trying to hide that the pom-poms were real fur.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 14/01/2024 02:40

better practice to use vintage furs than fall prey to consumerism and buy otherwise IF it fits your needs (live in an area where very cold climates are not unusual, canada for example with -26C weather this week).
the fur industry has come a long way in the past 20 years but i doubt it will recover to any preferred level of popularity.
it's very expensive here in canada to purchase real fur coats.
that being said i am not against the canadian fur industry and would support this vs the dog and cat fur bobbled hats from heaven knows were.
to answer the op's question it is both lighter and warmer. preferably with the fur on the inside of the coat.

MonsteraMama · 14/01/2024 02:56

I own one, it was my great grandmother's and she left it to me when she passed, it was bought for her by her husband in the 20's originally and a real Cruella DeVille number. I've never worn it, but I keep it because it feels wrong to sell or bin something she loved so much.

HollyKnight · 14/01/2024 02:59

I have my great-grandmother's fur coat. I think it is rabbit fur, but I can't be sure. It feels gorgeous. Like petting an animal...

It makes me sad. I only keep it for sentimental reasons, but I'm tempted to bury it if I'm honest.

HateMyRubbishBoss · 14/01/2024 03:00

@Sumsummer its worth googling the whole fur making business.

shocking at this times there are developed countries out there still making or importing them (UK still importing)

who gives a flying fuck if they’re warmer
