When would you wear this dress?

When would you wear This? Is it office wear? Casual wear? Could I get away with it at a winter wedding?

Funeral, Remembrance Day, civic service, or some other formal occasion that take place in a church or other cold building or outside.

It has a ‘royal family at Sandringham’ vibe.

I love it! But probably wouldn't wear to a wedding.

mondaytosunday · 08/01/2024 07:47

A bit severe. I wouldn't wear it to a wedding. The style is formal but the material (is it black denim?) makes it more casual. No idea about the office as mine is very casual (jeans).

Sparrow7 · 08/01/2024 07:48

Looks like it would be a nightmare to iron though, that would put me off!

Only on Mumsnet is this a dog walking dress!!!!🤣

Dog walking in town to meet friends in a cafe is what I said. Not tramping the Moors

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 08/01/2024 08:54

The material is corduroy. That makes it casual in my book.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 08/01/2024 08:55

I really like it though.

TheDandyLion · 08/01/2024 09:53

Is it a dress? I thought it was a coat when I first saw the picture.

clowniform · 08/01/2024 10:04

I think the tabs and gold buttons are confusing things and giving it a deceptively formal vibe (and clashing with the plastic navy buttons IMO). If I block those out it's a nice day dress I'd wear most places. Not a wedding unless it's unusually casual (men in jeans).

Sticking with similar from M&E I'd prefer this for a day dress and this for a celebration.

NoNotMyHair · 08/01/2024 10:16

My cousin wears this kind of thing for mucking out the horses. It's very warm and practical and she can style it up with a gilet and a Chameau boot.

Ignore the last few posts OP. It's a nice dress. It's a dress I'd get a lot of wear out of (although not to a wedding) and I'm sure you will too

Have you seen this Nobody's Child dress?

Nobody's Child cord dress

It's a similar style.

There's a whole thread about that dress!

[[//M&S green cord dress - any thoughts? | Mumsnet

(Yes, it's the same dress, M&S stock Nobody's Child)

I love it. I would wear it to work with flat brogues, I don't think it's dressy at all, I think it's a dress up or down outfit. I would wear it wit knee high dark tan boots for lunch with friends. I think it's lovely, wear it anywhere. Not necessarily to the wedding x

OwlWeiwei · 08/01/2024 11:18

Not for a wedding imo. It's day wear - suitable for teaching/lecturing or office, or casual drinks at a friends' house.

I'd style it very 1970s with long boots and a slimline polo neck underneath. It's a good dress.

Actually the more I look at it, the more I think you could wear it to a winter wedding..it's really nice.

LoobyDop · 08/01/2024 11:46

I would wear that to the office, and I have a couple very similar that I do wear to the office or when wfh. It’s not formal enough for a wedding. It’s perfectly appropriate for going out for lunch etc, but I wouldn’t wear it for that because I’d feel too office-y.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 08/01/2024 12:04

Interesting that some people have considered it to be a casual workplace dress for a day when they have no clients - it looks very formal to me, far too formal for my office so it would depend on workplace culture .

I could only see myself wearing it to a funeral really - perfect for that.

I love it so I don't really care if anyone else finds it vile. Just wondering when I should wear it!

I'm going with when I'm in a Kate Middleton dominatrix mood and off to the library.

I think I might’ve liked the dress when younger. I often think if a dress is reduced that much then there’s a reason for it.

I saw a Jasper Conrad similar dress with a belt and a Brora one too. I just think there are better dresses of this type than the Me + Em one you like.

PieAndLattes · 08/01/2024 12:55

Of course you could wear it to a winter wedding if you styled it right, especially if it’s one of those drafty stately homes that are all the rage. Undo the top buttons, plenty of gold jewellery, burgundy jacket and suede boots/heels, gold bag. You could even reveal a hint of burgundy camisole if you pleased.

PieAndLattes · 08/01/2024 12:59

Or, if it is button through, you could wear it open or partially open as a light coat over a camisole dress. You could even belt it so the dress would be visible. It’s very versatile and beautiful.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 08/01/2024 13:17

Never 🤦🏻‍♀️

AhBiscuits · 08/01/2024 13:36

I absolutely love it.
I would wear it to work (my work is pretty casual) or or just every day out and about.

thechangling · 08/01/2024 13:41

I really don't like it at all. I can't imagine it would be flattering on anyone.

thechangling · 08/01/2024 13:42

It would be better as a coat 🧥
