When would you wear This? Is it office wear? Casual wear? Could I get away with it at a winter wedding?

I would only wear this at a Victorian funeral.

IMO, it's absolutely hideous.

I’d wear it probably in the coffin! Or at funeral, it’s vile. Corduroy makes it even worse.

I'm not mad on the horizontal seam across the hips. If it's the Me&Em dress I think it is, there must be nicer dresses for the best part of £300. It's a bit confused. The cut is really formal, but corduroy tends to be casual.

£300?! 😱 My DM who can sew could probably knock this out on her machine.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 07/01/2024 22:37

Ignore the last few posts OP. It's a nice dress. It's a dress I'd get a lot of wear out of (although not to a wedding) and I'm sure you will too

Have you seen this Nobody's Child dress?

Nobody's Child cord dress

It's a similar style.

Office,yes
winter wedding, yes
MN thinks weddings one must wear florals, a shrug or a bolero and a jaunty hat

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/01/2024 22:42

My mistake it's been reduced to just under £200.

Divebar2021 · 07/01/2024 22:51

That’s a proper lady dress and there are no circumstances that I would be wearing it - I’ve no idea where anyone would wear it actually in a navy cord. I think in another fabric it could be very “Mrs Danvers” and I can imagine a Dita Von Teese fan going for it.

Only on Mumsnet is this a dog walking dress!!!!🤣

Snort 🤣

BasiliskStare · 07/01/2024 23:01

@cutlery - Well colour me sideways but I would wear that dress to a winter wedding with nice shoes and a couple of accessories .

ichundich · 07/01/2024 23:06

When you dress up as Kate Middleton.

MorrisZapp · 07/01/2024 23:07

I bought a fabulous dress once to wear to a big event, I felt amazing in it and got some lovely compliments.

The following week I had to pop into a local government office to drop off a document, and one of the admin staff in the background was wearing my dress. I was like WTF but obviously one person's knock out showstopper is another person's daywear.

That's very true. I think also the relaxation on what can be worn as office wear also works both ways- clothes that might have been too dressed up/ out there for the office now don't get a second look.

This is nice though. The person you saw wearing it could well have worn it first to a big event and decided that they loved it so much they’d incorporate it into everyday wear!

friskybivalves · 07/01/2024 23:28

I love it in the red.

That's an office and a general every day dress for me.

This. Wouldn’t wear to a wedding.

friskybivalves · 07/01/2024 23:28

Red wedding. Very GoT.

MorrisZapp · 07/01/2024 23:30

Thank you 😊

It's Mary Poppins on her day orf.

That dress is fit for a dominatrix librarian.

Nonsense. Corduroy would be a ridiculous fabric for a dominatrix. Far to difficult to clean.

RogueFemale · 08/01/2024 00:33

Beware when even the model looks awful in the dress. And look at the ugly cuffs. A 'formal' corduroy dress is a terrible idea, hard to imagine anything dowdier than this.

I love it so I don't really care if anyone else finds it vile. Just wondering when I should wear it!

I'm going with when I'm in a Kate Middleton dominatrix mood and off to the library.

I don't think it's dowdy.

As for imagining something that is dowdy, have a look at wedding guest and MoB/MoG threads. This isn't dressy enough/ stand out enough for me for a wedding but if the choice was this dress or the , to my eyes, insipid and fussy floral polyesters which are suggested on most of those threads I'd wear this.

WickDittington · 08/01/2024 07:26

When would you wear it? Well, like another poster, I think it’d be a nice warm dress to wear for walking the dog. Or a quiet day in the office. I like dresses and I actually like corduroy (for trousers or skirts) but this dress is just incoherent- formal but made of a fabric that’s better suited to casual wear; a potentially unflattering cut and the fussiness of the details make it look just a bit dowdy.

OTOH I was walking behind a man in the street the other day wearing the most gorgeous corduroy suit in a lovely string yellow brown. It was cut beautifully - no fussy bits so that the body and “hand” of the fabric could be used as part of the tailoring. I wish I’d asked him where he’d had it made.
