Not buying clothes 2024

Nonewclothes2024 · 14/12/2023 18:16

I need to stop buying clothes.
I have far too many.
I feel overwhelmed deciding what to wear every day.
I wear a uniform to work.
I have deleted all shopping apps.
I am unsubscribing from shop e mails.

Anyone else ?

I’m actually finding it quite liberating, at the moment ( not sure how long it will last 🤔) not looking for things & avoiding just scrolling. Great not feeling guilty, should I have ordered that? Or waiting in for deliveries. Spending more time reading & grooming my four very hairy mutts so they look elegant at least 😂

Same. Day 4 done ✅

Same. Always looking for the next thing.
But all the clothes I've got , I've thought that about at some point.

Trying to fulfil a need you have through buying clothes. The clothes themselves are not the real need hence it doesn't work.

I bought two pairs of socks today 🙄 I had bought them before Christmas but gave them away as a secret Santa. At least its just socks I guess but not a great start.

caramond · 04/01/2024 18:54

All the "extra 10% off" offers have started but at least it's giving me an excuse to unsubscribe from marketing emails.

The last item I bought in December arrived today and I love it so that's a good end to 2023 shopping at least. Now I really don't need anything else.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/01/2024 21:04

I’m going to take the top back that I bought yesterday, don’t really need it.
keeping the cargo trousers though

verdantverdure · 04/01/2024 21:51

Lord preserve us I have scrolled the sales a LOT today. I managed to not want anything enough to buy it though.

@Garlicnaan you're probably right in my case. I do have ADHD as well.

I checked out Boden's sale and saw a really pretty (and heavily discounted) dress in my size. Lovely shape and "my" colours but I managed to fight the desire to get it and closed the tab. 💪🏻

Count me in! I’ve just come across this thread but I’d actually already started doing this myself for 2024. My plan is to get to April (just so it doesn’t feel so daunting) but I’d really like to do the whole year. Breaking it up into seasons feels more manageable for now.

I’d really recommend looking up The Broke Generation on instagram. She did a year long freeze in buying clothes for 2023 and has lots of tips and insights. It’s what inspired me to give it a go.

Meant to say , I think the shopping gives me a dopamine hit ?

Anybody else love the hit of buying something then when it arrives you can't even be bothered to open it as the hit has gone? Not to a point of keeping stuff never opened but it takes ages to get round to it.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/01/2024 09:31

So far this year I’ve bought M&J warm jeggings, bralette - both needed! And a glitzy top in a local boutique in a sale, I didn’t need it but it’s warm and comfy and I’ve got 3 birthday things this month and can wear to all.

Mystro202 · 05/01/2024 09:45

I'm in! I splurged on sale items in December so I'm starting the new year with a fresh slate! If I can go 3 months only buying essentials I'll be delighted ☺

Yes. I have ended up keeping things because I've missed the returns window.

I want to do this. I have ridiculous amounts of clothes, I'm always looking for the next thing I 'need'. I could easily pay for a holiday for my family if I cut the spending. I've always thought I have issues with shopping. I think I think that the next thing I buy will be the perfect thing and I'll look amazing etc etc but then there is always something else after that.
I want to take it one step at a time, so make it through a week, then a month etc.....definitely need a support group for my awful habits!

This is exactly my problem too 🙈

greengreengrass25 · 05/01/2024 11:33

And mine

fernsandlilies · 05/01/2024 12:26

Just packed up 3 out of 5 items to return. The 4th is still under consideration, and the 5th is a definite keeper. Waterproof boots and a smart lightweight work jacket respectively, both of which I went looking for rather than drifted into.

I keep telling myself there has never yet been a day when I was unable to leave the house as I had nothing to wear. It is just 'want', but it's a lot easier to resist temptation when I'm happy with what I already have and with my own shape and appearance generally.

Not quite that but many things just opened then shoved in a cupboard only to be found months ( years 😳) later still with the tags on.
Not just clothes either but shoes still with the sticker on the soles, make up in its packaging. Double problem is many shoes have heels & now I’ve got arthritis in my spine so can’t wear heels. The money I’ve wasted fills me with shame.

Passingthethyme · 05/01/2024 12:38

I stopped buying clothes about 7 years ago when I realised everything I buy looks the same as the clothes I already have!! It's only now some of my more casual clothes look dated, for example jeans and casual dresses have changed quite a but the past year. But that's only some casual clothes, most still look great and I get compliments on things 15+ years old. Think how much money you are wasting

It's not as easy to just stop buying for many people (myself included). I'm an emotional spender and do it to fill a need. Just as people comfort eat, smoke for stress relief etc.

I'm now in my third month of not buying clothes and feel positive I might get my spending under control. Anything I do save is going into a renovation fund for my flat.

TitusMoan · 05/01/2024 13:28

100 dresses OP! Wow! Where do you keep them all? Have you got lots of bedrooms in your house? Or is one basically a walk-in wardrobe? I’ve got a friend who turned her spare room into a walk-in. It’s been done really well.

Andnowshesatoddler · 05/01/2024 14:46

I've got stuff in my car boot that is still within its returns period that I've picked up at various shops because it was a bargain I can't even be arsed with.

It's so terrible and incredibly wasteful I'm ashamed.

If it were me (I used to have lots of dresses) I’d do a curation and work out which ones I wore most/liked most. I used to have a thing for vintage dresses and got rid of a couple that I did like. Ah well! I do miss them but sometimes you have to realise the rush of how/why you buy.
