I need to stop buying clothes.
I have far too many.
I feel overwhelmed deciding what to wear every day.
I wear a uniform to work.
I have deleted all shopping apps.
I am unsubscribing from shop e mails.

Anyone else ?

Ok, we're going to have to go wild on the sales in the lead up though.

And then I may rethink my participation.
Sounds like a plan.

Yes ! Like a last meal 😂

I think too many clothes actually makes it harder to assemble outfits
there are you tubers that major on shopping your closet
another tip is making yourself wear everything, so everyday you select an item you haven't worn and wear it, then you will notice either you love it or the reason you don't wear it becomes apparent, it doesn't fit right the fabriic rides up or doesn't flow right or it's itchy or the waist digs in when you sit down or its too low cut or you just don't feel like yourself, or it's OK but not as good as my other ( almost identical item like you have 5 pairs of black trousers but only wear 2 of them)... it doesn't matter why it doesn't make you feel great; if it doesn't it gets sold or donated

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 15/12/2023 10:50

also having a reason for not doing something makes it easier, it is also psycholoigically better to say I am saving £200 a month to put towards something that is important to me instead of I'm not spending £200 on clothes... if the goal is to put an extra £200 aside so I have a £2000 emergency fund, paying off my credit card debt by June 2025 or whatever or perhaps saving for my holiday/ new car / house deposit / new sofa it is easier than just saving more for no specific purpose

I watch Caitlin Pawlowski, a reformed overshopper on You Tube. Does anyone have other recommendations?

AutumnOcean · 15/12/2023 11:51

You've inspired me to try! Good luck!

I just had a quick declutter of my wardrobe whilst DD napped so that’s a bin bag full for the local charity shop.

I actually prefer having less to wade through each morning & half of it was stuff that doesn’t go with anything else with out having to buy more, so in the bin bag it went.

ApolloandDaphne · 15/12/2023 13:10

My DD2 has done this in 2023. She says she has found it very liberating. Apart from some new pants and pair of trainers I bought her for her birthday she has bought nothing new at all. She has also cleared her wardrobe of all the clutter. I am very impressed as she used to have a serious ASOS habit!

Divebar2021 · 15/12/2023 21:37

Can I give you an app recommendation for playing around with your wardrobe…. Stylebook. You can create outfits and geek out over your most worn items and cost per wear. I keep failing to record all my clothes but I might make it my New years resolution to get it all catalogued.

I am only going to buy clothes with money made from selling them on Vinted. I have already sold most of my higher priced items and probably have less than £100 quid's worth to sell.

SheSawSeaShore · 16/12/2023 07:07

@Mercurial123 thank you for the YouTube recommendation. I watch Hannah Louise Poston on YouTube. She did a no buy year in 2018 I think it was, and made monthly check-ins during that year (as well as other content - particularly beauty related). She’s also done later summary and reflection videos. I’ve found them very interesting and thought-provoking (and I also really like her style)

I’m in for 2024. There is one thing which I will buy if I find the right one, but that’s it. I know I’ll find it really hard but I really want to do it. One tip (which I learnt from Hannah Louise Poston) is when you want something, write it down and wait, and after a time the desire for it usually fades. This works really well for me but my weaknesses are vinted and sales where if I don’t buy straight away the item will go. My vinted impulse habit needs to stop!

Mercurial123 · 22/12/2023 08:09

@ SheSawSeaShore, thanks. I enjoyed watching Hannah's no buy videos.

The Minamalists have just released a talk on YouTube called why shopping makes you miserable. It's quite good.

CharlotteRumpling · 22/12/2023 13:33

I need to join. I don't shop that much but the fact is I WFH so don't need much. And I don't have room for any more.

Ok, this year I am asking for a pair of boots for my birthday, and that's it.

Verv · 22/12/2023 14:27

Yep, and im pretty confident I can do it successfully as ive virtually replaced my entire wardrobe this year so im going into 2024 with new jeans, jumpers, joggers and underwear!

(not being a brag, but the stuff ive binned out and replaced was proper faded and holey, like decade+ old jeans and joggers)

I may be wfh more in 2024. So thinking , just find a couple of nice tops to wear on calls.

I’m ashamed to admit that I have quite a lot of things that have never been worn, mostly from when I’ve gone a bit mad in sales when a bargain seemed too hard to resist. So my plan is to wear something new ( unworn) a few times every week, even if it’s only a new pair of knickers from an unopened pack, till there’s nothing left still with tags or in unopened packs.
A tip I did read was to allow yourself to buy just one thing each month, so just 12 things by the end of the year, so you really thought hard about what you’d really like that month. But I’m going to aim for nothing at all.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 24/12/2023 08:25

I have so many clothes but they don't feel very cohesive, for example I have a couple of really nice plum coloured chinos which are so comfy and smart for work but I then have jumpers etc that don't go with them.

Get them sold on Vinted! It's people like you that make it so great 😄

Nonewclothes2024 · 24/12/2023 08:48

I will , just finding the motivation. 😂

I’m in, now that I’ve done an online order in the sales! I have too much of everything and want to shop my wardrobe in 2024 so ordered a few basics to stretch out my impulse buys, I know that sounds like a contradiction in terms but it makes sense in my head!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/12/2023 17:16

I’ve managed to do this for 2-3 months last year (partly because I was broke and not working!) just avoiding shops in person that I’d buy things from and online rubbish.

Before Christmas I did buy a new dress (reduced), top for friend for Christmas (reduced), and some silver jeans, grey jumper to go with them and new knickers as I needed some as holes in sides of my others!

I tried to avoid shopping in person even when Christmas shopping but I also thought much more about what I had, what I needed and what could be mended etc. I rediscovered a wool cocoon coat I have, used a cashmere scarf I got for Christmas still in its packaging. Even socks (thermal and lighter thermal ones) I realised I had enough.

TheSuggestedAmendment · 25/12/2023 17:18

I did this in 2023! I bought (second hand) a pair of trainers because my old ones fell apart and a pair of socks… and that’s it.

I’m very proud of myself but I won’t be doing it again in 2024 as my wardrobe does need a bit of a refresh.

You could treat yourself in other ways. Eg gallery visit. Posh coffee outing with a friend.

I’ve tried to cut down on makeup spending and beauty/hair products too. At Christmas I’ve hit pan on my blusher so asked for that, plus a posh mascara as I use that a lot and then retinol. I do have some mascaras I’ve almost used and the retinol I have is almost used. Last month DM gave me some daytime moisturiser she’d bought by mistake and couldn’t return and I only needed to buy Aldi lacura q10 night one.
