Not buying clothes 2024

Nonewclothes2024 · 14/12/2023 18:16

I need to stop buying clothes.
I have far too many.
I feel overwhelmed deciding what to wear every day.
I wear a uniform to work.
I have deleted all shopping apps.
I am unsubscribing from shop e mails.

Anyone else ?

Not bought anything the last month and as we are not having a summer, probably don't need any summer clothes. Though v tempted by the summer sales.
I am also aiming to wear each piece of clothing a minimum of 30 times.

Cantonet · 14/07/2024 12:09

I've not done particularly well this summer. I've already been on holiday & bought some items for that, as I've lost some weight. I wore them all & they are pretty classic things that I will be able to wear for years. There is absolutely no point in buying any more summer clothes this year due to this dreadful weather. Although I've bought 3 items for winter in the Free People sale.
I'm still tracking my clothes usage on Whering & thinking of archiving my summer dresses.
My style is changing as I lose weight. More neutrals & less black & colour.
Plus I'm 60 & this has prompted a change. This will be the first year I have no school run.

Checking in here as well. Just ordered a load of clothes to try from the Poetry and Wrap summer sales. A big spend but 2 sizes of lots of items and most of it will go back. Looked at various shops and saw nothing I liked, so many big, gaping dresses that would drown me. Never bought anything from there before, but liked the look of some things and the natural fabrics. I've gone from 9 stone to 8 stone since the beginning of this year, all my shorts are too big and look ridiculous and any summer trousers that aren't really stretchy material are too big. My summer dresses have a less fitted look, but I will still wear them. Hoping to find a few summer items for my holiday from it all that fit me better.

Cyclingmummy1 · 14/07/2024 20:37

I've bought a bikini as our bag didn't get on the same flight as we did yesterday so needed something...

And two pairs of sandals at the end of last month to replace two pairs which had fallen apart I might already have reported those.

Cyclingmummy1 · 14/07/2024 20:38

I'm also reading Patrick Grant's book, Less. He's very vocal in his condemnation of the fastest of fast fashion.

CeejayT01 · 15/07/2024 20:53

So glad to see this as a thread, as I have been trying to discuss my ‘clothes ban for the rest of 2024’ but nobody seemed to think it was a big deal- can’t wait to see how I do after reading all of this 🤗

TheOGCCL · 15/07/2024 22:18

@IndianSummer78 @HelenHywater Yes this is what I’m still working on! I’ve definitely stopped being such a magpie and started being more practical but @IndianSummer78 you’re so right about it being quite easy to look like you belong in a different era. I saw a lady walking in really high heels the other day and it was like she was a circus act or in fancy dress. I’ve always worn a lot of jeans but now even they seem a bit too formal sometimes. Same with boots and sandals v trainers. But neither do I want to slump into tracksuits. I’m increasingly mindful at least…

Welcome @CeejayT01!

tiktokontheclock · 15/07/2024 22:32

I'm not completely stopping buying things, but I am trying to be much more mindful and spending a lot less. I have a list of what I've bought and what I've sold so at the end of the year I can see what has gone in vs out. I know I'm spending a lot less - we're off on holiday this week and I've bought nothing new for it, in fact past few holidays I've stuck to the same wardrobe - but I will admit sometimes I am influenced, buy something, then return as i know ive been silly.

Cantonet · 15/07/2024 23:48

@IndianSummer78 I'm intrigued by your programme wardrobe inspiration. Who have you been inspired by recently? The only one most recently for me was The Magpie Murders.

IndianSummer78 · 16/07/2024 04:27

@TheOGCCL I remember growing up in the 90s, those 30+ (ancient, to my young eyes) women who still dressed as though it was the 80's. Everyone younger in jeans and maxi skirts, slim, a bit grungy with smokey eyes and flat hair, most older people looking plain and drab - while they're in a tight leopard print mini skirt and billowy sequins top, with blue eyeshadow, big hair and frosted pink lipstick. They couldn't have looked more out of place if they tried. It's a bit different now vintage style is a thing. I don't mind looking different from the norm anyway but there's just something off about looking "old fashioned" and not in a vintage way, that makes me want to run away from it and I'm not even sure why. It's not as if any of those leopard print women looked unhappy. They were mostly outside pubs and looked smiley and a bit drunk and like they were having fun 🤷. How on earth did jeans become too formal 🥴 when they literally originated from work wear though? At the same time I kinda get what you mean, jeans and a nice top can look quite smart still. Are we really all supposed to be wearing tracksuits 24/7 now? 😱 What's going on?! I'm in dog walker territory, the look appears to be compulsory whether you've a dog or not, so I feel like I don't exist in the real world any more or have any real clue what's happening (with fashion).

@Cantonet I haven't seen anything new in ages. Last thing I saw was Downton Abbey last year and I started wanting all those posh dresses the rich ones were wearing in the earlier series 😂 but it can be anything really, there's no one particular style. I remember being utterly obsessed with Sherlock Holmes' coat at one point and he's a man and doesn't look anything like me. There's no logic to it. I just want All The Clothes. I used to people watch on the high street with a friend when I was a teenager, it started there. Now I'm a grown up and don't spend my downtime lurking around the streets I get my people watching fix from binge watching TV shows occasionally. That's not why I'm watching the shows but it seems to be a naturally occurring side effect. I probably just need to get a life 😁

It's weird watching vintage fashions become the thing again. Might have mentioned before, can't remember. Saw a man late teens/early 20s a while ago and rather rudely stared because he looked like he'd stepped out of a poster for an early 90s boy band. I half expected a car to drive straight through him and for him to fade away disappearing into thin air like a ghost 👻 but he crossed at the zebra crossing and went into the shop like everyone else.

VimtoVimto · 16/07/2024 09:00

I sometimes find that even classics can become dated over time as the details on them subtly change. It’s hard to describe but I volunteer in a charity shop and see garments form 70s/80s/90s like trench coats and they look dated compared to a modern one. I think it’s the shaping and proportions of the garments, and details like collars, length and shoulder shape which pay lip service to current trends even if they don’t follow slavishly.

IndianSummer78 · 16/07/2024 16:02

I agree @VimtoVimto . You could spend a fortune on "forever" classics and 20yrs later it'd look all wrong. Personal style is the way to go. I struggle with today's trends anyway because so much of it isn't suited to my body shape. I could dress head to toe in a well coordinated totally modern outfit and still look shit because the proportions of the clothes don't actually suit me. I have a lifestyle now where I don't have to look any particular way, so wearing what works for me and developing a solid personal style is totally possible now. I'd love to work in a charity shop and see all those vintage pieces!

Netcam · 17/07/2024 09:00

@IndianSummer78, I totally agree with going with our own body shape and personal style. I look ridiculous in big, baggy things being 5'3 and now 8 stone.

I know slim trousers aren't really the current trend, but I've finally found a couple of pairs of trousers from the Poetry sale that I love from my big order. A pair of light denim slim cotton/linen trousers which will be great for proper summer and a pair of thicker olive cotton slim trousers which will be great for quite a lot of of our UK summer! Sending the rest of the order back and ordered a second pair of each of the above in dark denim/navy.

I am really pleased as they arrived yesterday and am going to wear the light denim linen/cotton ones with a silk shirt, tank top, and sandals to our outdoor afternoon work annual summer party today. I only go to the office about once a month and the air con makes it freezing so I didn't want to wear a summer dress, particularly as I only have short ones! But then I'll have to go outside and the weather forecast is actually hot today.

I usually end up wearing cotton leggings most of the summer because I can never find any cotton or linen trousers that look right, I've tried so many styles. But at 54, I am not really that happy going out in public in leggings. So it was worth spending some money on these. My winter trousers (and leggings) are all wool, quite stretchy, and seem to suit me better. At least in winter, I cover up my bum with a big jumper/cardi if I'm wearing wool leggings. Usually, when I find a style I like, I stop looking at clothes and wear the ones I have, I've had most of my wool trousers for years and wear the same ones every year.

Bignanna · 20/07/2024 17:53

I have more than enough clothes to last the rest of my life- then I get an email about fantastic sales…….

Mystro202 · 20/07/2024 20:03

I have spent far too much on clothes for myself and the dcs in the last few months. Mainly Next as I have a store card. I bought far too much unnecessary stuff in the sale. Joining for the motivation I need! The delivery man definitely thinks I have a problem, I'm actually embarrassed. This is a further reason to stop 😳

CharlotteRumpling · 22/07/2024 14:34

Saving so much money by only buying clothes in shops and not online.Yes, I know this is hopelessly old-fashioned. But I was tempted by the Cos sale.

Decided to go to a shop and all the stuff I liked was thin and shiny, or so baggy you could see my bra through the huge armholes. Decided not to buy. Not bought anything this month.

Andnowshesatoddler · 08/08/2024 13:04

Very much fallen off the wagon - I have lost a considerable amount of weight and am temporarily housebound which is giving me plenty of time for unnecessary vinted shopping.
I want an holiday though so I am going to avoid extra spending on clothes for the next the Two months 09/08/2024 -- 09/10/2024 .. can't count today been down the vinted hole.

Pigtailsandall · 14/08/2024 13:50

Hello all, how has the summer been? I avoided new clothes (hurrah) but I bought a new bag in June/July. It's a simple brown leather crossbody bag which has been on my wishlist for ages. I use it a lot, but I already feel like I'm not in love with it? It's slightly odd but it is almost too utilitarian to be "loved" as an item. Thus, I'm still dreaming about a Polene bag that's a bit more fun. Sigh.

I did buy a hoodie from a charity shop, but I didn't try it on and it was way too oversized, so I quickly sold it on Vinted. So not totally impulse-free, but at least I didn't lose any money/accumulate stuff.

D20 · 14/08/2024 15:14

Because we’ve barely had a summer I’ve only bought one new dress that I waited until the sales to snag that will look good cross seasonally with jumper and boots. An occasion dress (charity shop) and a second pair of (imperfect) Lucy & Yak Alexa’s rounds up my summer buys. I am not going to admit to my new footwear wardrobe though 😬 definitely need to get a grip there but all heavy reduced/ebay.

TheOGCCL · 14/08/2024 19:47

The only positive thing I can say is at least I’m improving year on year! And buying things that last the test of time, with fewer mistakes, whilst also keeping a hand in with trends. And I recently went on holiday with a perfect capsule wardrobe.

Spring and Autumn are my downfall so not sure what the new season will do to. I ideally want a coat and maybe some new boots as the winters are long.

I’ve already spent 80% of my budget for the year. I just want to keep being as mindful as possible. Shopping in store makes that a lot easier.

IndianSummer78 · 14/08/2024 21:23

I'm buying drastically less than I was. With more consideration for whether it fits into my wardrobe and matches with current things. I'm happy with my progress so far.

CeejayT01 · 15/08/2024 07:41

Well done everyone, every no-buy is a win! I have gone off clothes buying however seem to have diverted into thinking of other buying to compensate/now I have the attention for it. I will be sensible though 🤞🏻🫠

DyslexicPoster · 15/08/2024 09:49

I bought some new summer pjs in the sale at Primark yesterday. I'm finding the less I buy the less I'm interested in buying. It's like breaking a habit

Gingerwarthog · 29/08/2024 09:46

Have saved quite a lot of time too. Instead of going to the shops, driving into town, parking , invariably having a coffee etc, I have been sorting out the allotment and taking things to the tip.

The house is clean and tidy, the allotment looks great and my bank balance is healthier. Win!

Gingerwarthog · 29/08/2024 09:48

Swerved buying beach clothes and recycled last year's shorts, T- shirts and beach dress.
With the money I save will buy myself and DD Winter wetsuits.
