Not buying clothes 2024

Nonewclothes2024 · 14/12/2023 18:16

I need to stop buying clothes.
I have far too many.
I feel overwhelmed deciding what to wear every day.
I wear a uniform to work.
I have deleted all shopping apps.
I am unsubscribing from shop e mails.

Anyone else ?

I have further disgraced myself by buying a DvF dress. But omg it’s so beautiful I am unrepentant.

CharlotteRumpling · 28/04/2024 07:46

Well, if it brings you joy, then that's fine, no? Buying stuff is not bringing me much joy, or only a momentary hit of dopamine. I have joined a once-a- week hobby group with the money saved, and am really enjoying it.

Mirabai · 28/04/2024 09:23

I mean I was trying not to buy clothes. I already have so many interests and hobbies. But I don’t need more clothes either. Thanks for chirping me along, appreciated.

I'm on a very rocky road, caught between wanting new things to brighten my wardrobe up and knowing I do not need new things, and between wanting to be reasonably fashionable which isn't necessarily what I suit.

Still doing way better than last year and have been saving more and spending more on 'experiences' and charity

I've resisted so far.
I'm not Miss Fashionable , but feel like I want some up to date things.
Then I still keep 10 year old clothes.

Hello newbies and everyone else! I'm still doing well - no buys, and have sold £360 worth of clothes on Vinted in the last month. I try to put on 3 items a day. It irks me that clothes that cost so much, go for so little!

I'm more tempted now as I prefer warmer weather clothes. Also have a party and a graduation in the next couple of months so am thinking of buying one dress (for my birthday) for those events.

Wow £360. I must get on Vinted.

I haven't bought anything new or second-hand recently, although last month I did replace some skincare items. And only what I needed, despite the temptation of beauty boxes etc.!

I'm fed up with Vinted and the hassle of selling, answering queries, shipping for very little money. If my wardrobe had loads of designer etc. garments then I might feel differently, but it doesn't. So nowadays I just donate to charity or textile recycling (if it's not in good enough shape for charity).

Thinking of purchasing a pair of navy shorts from M&S (I only have one - I mostly wear skirts and dresses instead), which I may need during my trip to visit family in the U.S. this summer, but the current weather is not making me think warm sunshine is coming here anytime soon...

Good luck everyone!

DyslexicPoster · 04/05/2024 21:09

I think I'm doing well. Only replacing things my children really, really need and a few bits I have seen in charity shops. I had a £5 off £15 clothes in Asda so got some new jeans. I have ordered a t shirt dress from TU as well.

Recently I'm finding I can't sell anything on Vinted, I guess it's a saturated market now. So much cheaper not to buy it in the first place. I have grouped all of my wardrobe into categories now so I can 'shop' from my own wardrobe

CharlotteRumpling · 05/05/2024 20:26

Well, I succumbed and bought something. Only a cheapish cotton shirt from H and M though. I am glad I at least bought it in store, so I avoided returns.

Also, since I haven't bought anything for a while, I was shocked by how much prices have gone up for clothes. Some lovely things in Arket, but £££.

NeedWineNow · 06/05/2024 11:06

I haven't been doing too badly, although did get some canvas wedges and a dress in H&M recently along with a couple of bits in Primark. Oh, and my £2.00 Radley and Accessorize bag bargains in one of our local charity shops when they were having an 'Everything £2.00 day'.

We were in Stratford on Friday and we had a wander round Westfield as we had an hour to kill. We are in Kent and were amazed how quickly we got there. Hugely tempting whilst I was there but as we didn't have a lot of time before meeting friends DH suggested we go over in a couple of weeks for a shopping day. I was up for it, but in the cold light of a very rainy day I'm thinking that I have got more than enough in my wardrobe so I really don't need to go. It felt a bit overwhelming and hot in there as well so I think I'll ditch it for the time being. I'm amazed at myself to be honest - perhaps I'm finally becoming sensible in my old age!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 06/05/2024 19:26

I got my summer clothes out and have a few 'new' things as I managed to fit in some things that didn't fit me last summer :)

Need to replace some basic tshirts though maybe a black, grey and something like purple or dark red to replace some Hobbs tops I wear for work and are now getting very thin.

moimichme · 13/05/2024 19:22

Well done, Living - that must be a nice feeling! And I think replacing worn out clothes is absolutely fine, as long as the old items do go out. (Sometimes I take too long with that step!)

I have to admit to still thinking about that pair of navy M&S shorts, but I haven't bought them. I should try local charity shops, or at least try on that pair first, in person. Maybe next weekend if I'm still considering it and haven't found anything secondhand locally. There's no rush, we're not leaving for our trip until July after school finishes for the summer.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 14/05/2024 09:56

Unfortunately while I'm so pleased to get into some old trousers and jeans my summer wardrobe is really lacking cohesion. I really don't have a lot of tops that I am excited to wear and the colours are not really jelling with the bottoms I have which I do like.

christmascactus22 · 15/05/2024 14:00

I've caved and bought a few things. I needed new trousers and shorts to replace old ones which had gone into holes and bought a new dress for a function. Strictly speaking, I didn't need the dress, but I know I'll get a lot of wear out of it. I'm in the process of losing weight and looking forward to shopping the wardrobe once more stuff fits me. I have lots of tops and skirts I'm looking forward to wearing but not many trousers as I seem to wear them out.

awaynboilyurheid · 17/05/2024 17:36

M and S shorts
just bought these online so hoping they will be nice on! Can wear with the many tops I have since I seem to buy lots of stuff but nothing “ goes” together and I think I have nothing to wear! Trying to buy some basics that will go with lots of things .

Am back on it now.
Still pleased I held out till mid May though, when I used to buy several things every week.

I also held out until mid month this time OP. I didn't buy loads either. I've done really well with low-buy this month. Just got to keep it up now!

Yep. I'm back on it now. Ignored the shops today ( except food).

I’ve been a lot better this month. I’m trying to enjoy the online window shopping more than the thrill of the purchase. Even wasted some time looking at second hand designer stuff on eBay.

Andnowshesatoddler · 26/05/2024 08:56

My lovely husband treated me to some new bits following my weight loss

Currently got linen trousers on £24 - next. (3 sizes smaller woohoo)

Got a couple of new dresses and skirts too.

redfacebigdisgrace · 26/05/2024 09:10

Just popped into this thread to help with my shopping addiction and the last few posts are all about what people have bought! 🤔😂

Andnowshesatoddler · 26/05/2024 14:56

@redfacebigdisgrace you are absolutely right but each and everybody would have spent more/brought with less consideration in the past just because they are on this page does not mean we are all not a new stitch converts I know for me I am about buying a lot less and more consideration.
If it doesn't suit your requirements I'm sure there will be plenty of other pages to choose from.

redfacebigdisgrace · 26/05/2024 16:59

You seem a bit touchy @Andnowshesatoddler the thread is entitled “not buying clothes 2024” and I get what you’re saying but people are posting links of what they are buying. 😂

Andnowshesatoddler · 26/05/2024 17:49

Definitely not touchy, just explaining from my point of view.

IndianSummer78 · 26/05/2024 21:37

@redfacebigdisgrace if you read the thread you'll see lots of people are on a low-buy rather than no-buy, hence the posts about what people have bought.

I've done well this month. Quite spendy because what I bought happened to be mostly expensive things but I bought hardly anything which is the main thing. Of the two parts of this I've decided reducing the purchases is more important to me than reducing the expense. I'm supposed to be decluttering (in general, not just clothes) so reducing what I bring into the home has to be my primary concern for now.

redfacebigdisgrace · 26/05/2024 22:30

I think the scary thing is seeing how little you get for selling stuff in Vinted. It’s quite shocking, even if things are pretty much brand new. That realisation and the amount of effort involved in getting my summer clothes down from the attic and putting away my winter clothes. It’s crazy how much time I spend managing my “stuff”.
