Not buying clothes 2024

Nonewclothes2024 · 14/12/2023 18:16

I need to stop buying clothes.
I have far too many.
I feel overwhelmed deciding what to wear every day.
I wear a uniform to work.
I have deleted all shopping apps.
I am unsubscribing from shop e mails.

Anyone else ?

I can easily drive round with a return for a couple of weeks, I'll do it after work.. no parking I'll do it later this afto ... Baby is acting up and before I know it it's last day/I've missed it I didn't realise I only had limited time for a marks and sparks sale item so I couldn't return that as poorly mum got in the way.

moimichme · 07/04/2024 08:23

I know it's not for everyone, and some places don't have a great many options, but returns are such a faff that I prefer second-hand when possible. If an item doesn't suit me as much as I initially hoped, it's no great loss to wear it a couple of times and then donate it to rejoin the charity market/cycle.

All my clothing budget this month has been spent on new clothes for ds - but I am still tempted this time of year to browse. I like the light purples, blue and teal shades that I've seen. Must resist for now. I have enough.

verdantverdure · 08/04/2024 16:06

I’ve bought two bras secondhand on Vinted which means I now have four bras for work/social life, a couple of sports bras for running, and four stretchy bralettes for everything else. I’d like one more bra really, but I can hang on until something suitable comes up secondhand.

I'm still doing well and haven't bought anything. I've been selling on Vinted and am building up quite a balance on there. I'm going to use it to buy something for the house (unlike my wardrobe, my house is neglected).

I get the "forgetting" to send things back - for whatever reason - I just sold 2 pairs of trousers I bought from Cos last year, both still with their tags on and unworn. I will need some sandals and white t shirts in the summer as mine are unwearable from last year. But maybe I won't need them if the weather continues as it is....

Veryverycalmnow · 10/04/2024 21:07

Please can I join- just seen this. I have changed size quite a lot over the last few years and have enough clothes in every shape, size and colour. If I lose a bit of weight I have a 'new' wardrobe, so that's a positive. I have been buying LOADS on Vinted, thinking I'm a savvy shopper- I just think, oh it's only a tenner, but with postage and the amount I've been buying it soon adds up.
I was contemplating the 'no- spend year', but I will try this first and start with clothes. Sounds like some of you are doing really well! ☺️

FastFashionFashionFast · 11/04/2024 12:06

I'm joining too (better late than never)!

Planning to buy the odd thing, but mainly can make do with what I have.

I will buy things like pants, socks, bras and things to make clothes I already own work (eg I need a belt for some jeans which don't stay up on me otherwise). But always will try to buy secondhand. No more fast fashion this year. I really should know better but then something catches my eye in Asda

HelenHywater · 11/04/2024 12:32

I'm wondering whether I can buy myself some shoes (that I don't strictly need) as a birthday present? (I don't have a partner). What do you all think?

Darklane · 11/04/2024 13:02

You deserve a birthday present.
I was doing so well, bought nothing all year till this week when I’ve just ordered a pair of cargo pants, been wanting some for ages then just saw what looks like the perfect pair in petit, and a linen dress in House of Bruar’s sale. Ah well, hopefully that’s the last of my summer wardrobe.

NeedWineNow · 11/04/2024 16:15

I was trying to be very low spend as opposed to no spend. I’ve bought some Fila trainers and had some great charity shop finds - everything in our local one was £2.00 today and I was lucky to pick up a couple of bags; a straw handbag with white handles ideal for a wedding I’m going to in the summer,!and also a Radley medium‘Pockets’ bag in black. The lining is a bit grubby but nothing that can’t be dealt with, and it needs a little bit of polish but it should come up a treat. Particularly please as the new ones are £159 on the website.

lindyloo57 · 11/04/2024 19:31

I'm doing better with the beauty buys, as I don't work in the city now, so I don't spend my lunchtime walking around boots buying things I didn't need, I did order the new cream they have just released, they sent me a email, I got £10 off and a free gift thats supposed to be worth £100 so £25 for it all seems a good price , I can use some for presents.

Nonewclothes2024 · 20/04/2024 12:26

Still not bought any clothes 😊
However , I've had £20 worth of stuff in a Boots basket for a few days.
Don't need any of it of course.

Joining.
Trying to do low buy but not very good at it 😳
This year I've bought:
2 bras Sainsbos (binned a couple that were worn out so this was a replacement)
4 pairs socks from H&M (wanted some red ones, came in pack)
Green check shorts and broderie waistcoat from Primark
Pin stripe flared trousers H&M (been looking for a pair for a while that fit right)
Scarf and a bag from charity shop
Dress, black converse and a bag from Depop
Bag from H&M (one bag recycled so a replacement)

There was probably more earlier in the year that I've forgotten.

Oh dear, must stop now. Need to stop buying bags - I always think I need a particular bag for certain outfits that I have in mind. Also I love charity shops, always find stuff I like in the ones near me.

Pigtailsandall · 24/04/2024 10:29

So I'm on both this thread AND the "Anyone started shopping for summer yet" which is kind of ironic. However, I AM doing a low-buy and trying to find a balance in buying less but better, and also being quite critical with what I buy. I try to get things second-hand, but I find things likes shoes and trousers almost impossible unless it's a specific item I already have/have tried on.

This month, I bought a new pair of wide-leg black trousers. They are very lightweight so good for summer, and will replace an existing jersey pair which are looking a bit worn but also are a bit too heavy for summer. So one in, one out.

HelenHywater · 24/04/2024 12:49

Hello newbies and everyone else! I'm still doing well - no buys, and have sold £360 worth of clothes on Vinted in the last month. I try to put on 3 items a day. It irks me that clothes that cost so much, go for so little!

I'm more tempted now as I prefer warmer weather clothes. Also have a party and a graduation in the next couple of months so am thinking of buying one dress (for my birthday) for those events.

Mirabai · 24/04/2024 13:12

I’m selling 2 brand new camel pea coats on Vinted and no-none wants them 😕

HelenHywater · 24/04/2024 15:30

I've got a coat for sale too which no one wants! I think everyone's looking for spring/summer wear now.

Divebar2021 · 24/04/2024 16:23

I’ve been selling too on Vinted and have cleared about 12 things so far. The prices are low I agree but the process is painless and the space is more valuable to me than the clothing. ( I have a coat listed too but I pretty much knew I’d missed the window with that one. I’m sick of coats. It will sell in September). I’ve bought a couple of things from Vinted but I’m only using my balance and I haven’t spent tons. Last month was the first month in ages that I had money left over at the end of the month so I was pretty chuffed about that.

Cyclingmummy1 · 24/04/2024 19:57

I've sold 6 lots, 9 items since Saturday. They are mainly low value but they've gone. I've another 5-6 things to put on this weekend; I find pay day weekends and back holidays are the best for sale so hope to move quite a lot.

Andnowshesatoddler · 27/04/2024 09:26

I'm loosing a significant amount of weight so I intend to/need to go shopping quite soon very excited by the prospect of buying what I like rather than what I can get to fit me.

Changing my aim to considered purchases and keeping nothing that doesn't bring me joy.

TheOGCCL · 27/04/2024 11:36

I'm on a very rocky road, caught between wanting new things to brighten my wardrobe up and knowing I do not need new things, and between wanting to be reasonably fashionable which isn't necessarily what I suit.

Still doing way better than last year and have been saving more and spending more on 'experiences' and charity

Don't worry, a few new things aren't the end of the world. I've not done very well either, I've just bought a really nice wool jumper and a wool cardigan at great prices in the sales. They will get put away so I have new things to open when it gets cold (oh, it's still cold, is it really nearly May). I got a proper full time job after being self employed for many years so decided to treat myself a bit with my first month's salary.

Me too.
I've been feeling really down & unsociable this very long Winter. I've needed some pick-me-ups. So I've bought some things that will get a lot of wear. They weren't essential, but they do fit neatly into my capsule wardrobe. Basics like jeans, a trench coat & a cardi.

IndianSummer78 · 27/04/2024 18:46

I've not done well this month again either. I'm going to try to buy nothing except food and petrol in May.

CharlotteRumpling · 27/04/2024 21:10

I am doing really well, not to sound smug. Not bought anything this month except tights. Particularly proud that I had a work event and was tempted to buy something, but didn't and made do with what I had. I am digging out old stuff and styling it differently.
