Nonewclothes2024 · 14/12/2023 18:16

I need to stop buying clothes.
I have far too many.
I feel overwhelmed deciding what to wear every day.
I wear a uniform to work.
I have deleted all shopping apps.
I am unsubscribing from shop e mails.

Anyone else ?

I bought a leather bomber jacket (heavily reduced) in a sale last week.

I need to get a hold of myself, buying to fulfil emotional needs and also would prefer to buy quality which lasts longer, eg a lot longer. I have issues taking care of cashmere etc but can do it. All my “nice” proper old fashioned knitwear would last and look much better than what’s on sale now, this is from when I was a teenager (late teens) and early 20s though!

I need to return 2 Sainsburys Tu skirts which though they’re nice I don’t really need.

Agree with you @TheOGCCL about Tescos clothes being rubbish! When I go there I sometimes pick up leggings or jeans but plain socks and cotton knickers are never there! A long sleeved plain navy top was sold out!

Total buys this year:
2 bras
1 skirt
Hoping to keep it this way til summer.

I’m starting to get really aware of the gaps in my wardrobe too. It’s made me think about what I actually need and would wear a lot.

Although the thought of trying to find the exact item I have in my head feels a bit overwhelming now too. I would’ve just bought any black blouse before but now I feel like I have to find THE black blouse. It doesn’t help that everything seems so poorly made and overpriced these days.

You’re exactly the same as me. I saw and bought 2 blouses about 2 weeks ago. In a local boutique where I know the owner. One a sort of grey black and white polka dot blouse and the other black with white detailing more of a shirt. But I had to try on a few to get the right size, I needed something smarter for work but also items I know I’ll keep. I’ve got into black (it suits me for some reason).

Funnily enough most of what DM bought for me as a teenager was black/black and white plus navy. Fairly classic clothes but sometimes with a twist. And I’m really gravitating back towards that look now and realising it suits me. 35 years later mind you! I also started wearing my deep conditioned hair slicked back into a low ponytail which suits me too, rarely did that before.

Give me your tips please!

With me as a child and teenager I was sometimes but not often bought new clothes. And teased for it. So I think why I’ve shopped a lot in the past is to fill that gap. I’ve never quite felt pretty enough, good enough, though I know I am!

My tips:
I live in London with very little cupboard space
I WFH so no need for nice clothes
My friendship group couldn't care less about clothes
I am 52 and not that interested in looking pretty any more, thank god. 😀

I could be you! But have a small house/cottage which I've cleared of most of my past buys! Live in London suburbs. I also WFH and friendship group isn't that bothered about nice clothes either. I've just always liked nice clothes! My boutique owner 'friend' doesn't help as she likes nice clothes and always has done too!

CharlotteRumpling · 26/02/2024 13:58

Well @Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain I also really love going to the theatre and ballet, which have got very expensive but also very casual in terms of dress. So with the saved money, I went to Edward Scissorhands last month and am going to Macbeth next month. That gives me my dopamine hit. I will be going in my indigo jeans or cords with trainers. Everybody else is!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/02/2024 19:49

I've got a black tie dinner on Thursday which I bought a dress for from Vinted, £12!

Other than that I've been 'shopping my wardrobe' today I wore a purple cord skirt I've not been reaching for with a newer merino turtleneck I got before Christmas. The skirt fits really well and is comfortable and a good length, I may put together and photograph another two outfits with it for inspiration.

Pigtailsandall · 26/02/2024 19:57

I failed slightly. I really wanted a light-weight white broderie top for summer, and last year I bought one. It's been OK, but the neck is quite high and it's a tad too billowy.

Today I walked into Sainsbury's and couldn't believe there was one just there, staring me in the face across the clementines, absolutely perfect. Very light-weight soft cotton, with a slight v-neck and a smocked front. It was absolutely the top I wanted for summer. So I bought it 😶 and now feel mixture of excitement and guilt.

Andnowshesatoddler · 27/02/2024 07:12

@Pigtailsandall I'm a definite enabler and probably not fully in the nature of this 'experiment' 'endevour?' (sorry I've had a complete 7am brain freeze for the right word thanks to the toddlers night but hope you know what I mean) but sometimes you just find the right item of clothing and need to buy it, I mean it was sainsbos not some triple digit shop x

I have some cruise wear items to pick up will declare if kept

Pigtailsandall · 27/02/2024 09:53

@Andnowshesatoddler yeah I think you have a point. Once the weather perks up, I will list the old one on vinted so it'll be one in, one out. I'm also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the top. If someone had shown it to me without tags and said it's from me+em, I would have believed them.

I'll have to put blinkers on next time I go food shopping. Or just send dh.

Andnowshesatoddler · 27/02/2024 09:58

Sounds same as my recent tu purchase, had somebody said it's from marks and Spencer or somewhere I'd have definitely believed them a nice heavy material.

Exactly - it's dopamine hits for me with clothes shopping! I was never like this as a teen/early to mid 20s though, always very considered re clothes shopping and would travel to buy a certain but well made and pricey item of clothes/shoes which I liked. In fact my DM once told me to buy some shoes in a sale when I was 20 or so!

I wouldn't feel too bad about the Sainsbos top if it worked for you. It's cheap enough that you won't feel the pinch but also their designs and quality aren't bad for a supermarket.

CharlotteRumpling · 27/02/2024 11:04

Other dopamine hits I am trying instead of going online to shop in the dark evenings
Hot luxurious bubbly baths
Hot chocolate
Library books
Silent Witness
Podcasts

Agree Sainsbos has great clothes sometimes.

WoodBurningStov · 27/02/2024 12:35

I'm on Vinted, no 'new' clothes in 2024. I've been selling items and then keeping the money in my Vinted account and only spending that. It means I have to be very sure I'm buying what I want, and that will suit me. Plus it feeds my 'browsing' need. I'll spend an hour an evening looking for deals and things I might like.

DyslexicPoster · 27/02/2024 13:10

I'm keeping my vinted balance on Vinted too. Dd has far too many clothes but just outgrown all her jeans. She likes wearing jeans for mufti so I bought her a pair for £1.50. I still feel guilty. Not about the money. Just bringing in my items

Edited

I volunteer in a charity shop and it’s surprising the number of garments that I would have said was White Stuff or Fatface that are actually from Sainsburys.

Andnowshesatoddler · 28/02/2024 06:24

Declaring

  • dress I ordered for an event £15. Sending £45 of stuff back though which was meh.
  • £30 purse. Very sent me a 30 off 60 and I fancied a new purse for a while.
Hopefully that'll be that for a while now though mind.
Frumpitydoo · 05/03/2024 07:38

1 pair Crocs platform sliders
2 pairs Crocs platform boots, all sale
1 charity shop Thomas Pink pure silk circle skirt to-die-for £6

Frumpitydoo · 05/03/2024 07:41

Oh shit, also 2 tea dresses and a pure silk loose fit shirt dress, all charity shop buys (2 from Oxfam so £15 each!) I'll show myself out!

fernsandlilies · 05/03/2024 08:46

I’ll join you on the way out..

1 sparkly shrug for a ball
1 entirely unnecessary velvet jacket
1 t shirt because it’s a nice colour
1 cardigan, as above

all Vinted

WoodBurningStov · 05/03/2024 10:20

I caved and bought two pairs of decent leggings from next. Fed up of buying second hand ones which are shit quality.

lindyloo57 · 05/03/2024 11:04

I ordered the tu wide leg jeans alot of people are raving about on mumsnet, but the length was too short and leg too wide for me

CharlotteRumpling · 05/03/2024 13:07

Still holding out and not spent anything in a month. Total spend this year £70. Have put money saved into a Monzo pot for travel since train fares going to rise. Makes me feel smug!

V tempted by charity shops and Baukjen sale, but resisted.
