Not buying clothes 2024

Nonewclothes2024 · 14/12/2023 18:16

I need to stop buying clothes.
I have far too many.
I feel overwhelmed deciding what to wear every day.
I wear a uniform to work.
I have deleted all shopping apps.
I am unsubscribing from shop e mails.

Anyone else ?

I say this every January, but the longest I've gone is to April. Must try harder.

Redlarge · 14/12/2023 18:41

I need some new jeans and tights but once they are bought I can easily go next year without buying anything for me.

I will need skincare at some point though but i only buy superdrug stuff. X

Twoshoesnewshoes · 14/12/2023 19:01

I really need to
i have tried before, then I just forget and go back to old habits
I buy at least a couple of items every week.
I’ll give it a go, though I may have a shopping day every quarter. Add things to a list, then evaluate the list on shopping day and get what I actually need, not just random things I want.

Apple2023 · 14/12/2023 19:23

I need to do this too! I have so many things in my wardrobe but feel like I never have anything to wear.

Darklane · 14/12/2023 21:37

Yes!
I really need to do this too. Like you I have far too many clothes.
My plan is to shop my wardrobe, really really intend to buy nothing next year.

TheOGCCL · 14/12/2023 21:38

Yeah this is tough. I do want to. Need to find the willpower. I think it gets easier once you make it past a couple of months. I managed January last year.

Meadowflower2023 · 14/12/2023 21:45

I say this every year and like PP only last a few months max before I cave. Also like PP have said, I've far too many clothes already. It would be much better for the environment if we can team up and avoid these excessive clothes purchases and most definitely better for the bank balance too! I do like the quarterly idea also previously mentioned, that's a good call and probably more doable for me using those tactics.

I'm in!

Clemfandango95 · 14/12/2023 22:19

Things like vinted / charity shops suck me in because soooooo cheap and feel like I've found a bargain, even if I don't need 🥲🥲

Notsokeeny · 14/12/2023 22:20

Agh! I’m the opposite. I just CANNOT ring myself to pay so much for clothes. I wish I could.im tatty and yikky.

Christmassss · 14/12/2023 22:43

I did this about 15 years ago, I only bought underwear, tights and one going out dress.

That is my plan 'shop my wardrobe'.

My friend suggested I put the money I would have spent on clothes away , but it's different every month, but I'm sure I'll be better off I n general.

April is 4 months better than my current record.

Agree , it will be tough , but satisfying I hope.

Oh I want to do this! I'm changing into a job that requires more days in the office than I currently do, so I might need to get some additional workwear, however I feel I have enough work outfits for now so can just shop my wardrobe instead

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 15/12/2023 02:27

Yes, me!! I only do casual work now, I have more than enough clothes to see me through several years, and I'm just buying because I like the look of something, there is nothing at all that I need.

PepsiMaxLime · 15/12/2023 03:14

Perhaps it would be motivating to save the average you spend per month into a pot, have a good clear out of your current wardrobe and then use the money to buy a few quality items your wardrobe actually needs & things that work together so you do always have something to wear.

One trick for this is turn your hangers the opposite way (so hook facing towards you rather than away) then when you wear the item turn the hanger back the usual way. Then each season/ 6 months go through your wardrobe and you can easily see what you’ve not worn and can sell on Vinted / donate.

Now if only I could take my own advice…

SparklingSparkle · 15/12/2023 04:23

Yes!! I'm with you. All I need is some bras absolutely nothing else.

IndianSummer78 · 15/12/2023 04:57

I'm in! I tried and failed in 2023 but did manage to curb it a lot both in number of items and amount spent.

I was also more conscious of what use I'd get from things before purchasing, which was a mindset shift from purchasing whatever I saw that I happened to like. I did buy a lot but I managed to leave a lot in the store too.

So, I'm going to fail, I know that already. It's just a question of by how much. I'm currently decluttering slowly, so my aim is to have more going out than what comes in, to cut my spending down by at least half and to drastically reduce the number of items I buy from last year.

I'm not only doing it with clothes either. I'm doing it with kids stuff, hobby stuff and beauty products too.

I'd love to have a whole year of frugal no-buy except essentials. I started a notebook last year of spends so I can compare this year with that.

Mercurial123 · 15/12/2023 05:24

I've not bought anything for three months. I don't need anything. For 2024, I'm planning on buying five new items, but hopefully, it's less. I shop when I'm bored or stressed.

Mercurial123 · 15/12/2023 05:25

Forgot to say I use the app Spendee, and that helps me to be more aware of my habits.

Nonewclothes2024 · 15/12/2023 06:12

Some good advice here.

Christmassss · 15/12/2023 08:13

When I did it I didn’t find it tough, I simply didn’t look/go in/think about clothes shopping. I mix and maxed what I already had, I actually find it liberating like a job had been ticked off my list. I played around with my accessories too.
As I said upthread I bought one dress which was for my 40th that I wore quite a few times that year so I really thought about it’s wearability.
I still got my hair cut regularly, wore makeup and made a effort to look nice I just missed out the shopping bit.

icanlovemebetter · 15/12/2023 08:17

I normally buy around May for summer / birthday and October for fall/ winter. It's a lot of clothes squeezed in to 2-3 shopping bags. I'll try to reduce the numbrer thisbyear.

BlackSwan · 15/12/2023 09:55

Ok, we're going to have to go wild on the sales in the lead up though.

And then I may rethink my participation.
Sounds like a plan.
