Is that Prince Richard on the left
of the photo?

It does look like the Duke of Gloucester. I think his wife is so nice too. I was re watching a Hannah Hauxwell dvd earlier this year and there was a delightful scene of Hannah meeting the Duchess. Hannah having no TV did not realise that she was Danish and asked her where she came from.

SenecaFallsRedux · 31/12/2023 15:56

I really like Birgitte's fashion style, and she does come across as friendly and down to earth.

Houseplanter · 31/12/2023 16:23

I wonder if Queen Camilla is making use of the late Queens umbrella collection.

BeaRF75 · 31/12/2023 17:35

I am a long-time lurker on this lovely thread, and thought the group would like to know that the utterly splendid Queen Margrethe has announced that she will be abdicating on the 52nd anniversary of her accession next month. So Fred and Mary are about to become King and Queen.
I'm not sure our late QEII would approve.....

Maireas · 31/12/2023 17:41

Evening, @BeaRF75 - interesting information! I had no idea, I don't know if anyone else did.

I do wonder if she felt it was time to give him focus and purpose...

Choux · 31/12/2023 17:42

Just read that news. I wonder how long that has been planned. Is that part of why she removed her grandchildren's titles?

Did she wait till Christian was legally an adult? Did the rumoured cheating of her son last month have any bearing on the timeline? So many questions. I bet Mary is thrilled to become Queen finally as her contempories Leti and Max have been Queens for years.

No more sleepovers with his Spanish friend for Fred then...

Go Daisy! I’m so glad abdication isn’t a dirty word in the rest of Europe. 52 years is a good old stint.

Maireas · 31/12/2023 17:43

Mmm, time to step up, Fred?!

Interesting turn of events, she looks so sprightly, I would never have guessed she was ready to hand over the crown.

Same here, that's a real surprise.

Maybe she deliberately wants to retire while she still is a bit sprightly and able to enjoy having a quieter time? Can’t blame anyone for that. I know QE2 was all for duty, but literally working until the day before you die is a lot to ask.

Choux · 31/12/2023 17:56

Both her two sisters are now widows as is Margarethe. She has back surgery in February so isn't in perfect health. I can imagine she would like to spend her remaining time with her recently widowed sisters. Her son is 55 and his son is now 18 which probably swung it. Plus the carrot of Queen Mary gives Mary something to focus on other than her cheating husband.

Well hello @BeaRF75 and thank you for the info!
this is EVERYTHING. Eternal Birthday Girl is about to become Eternal Birthday Queen.

can we watch the ceremony cos I am all in for this. Bring the bling Mary.

Lunde · 31/12/2023 17:58

I know that Margrethe has had some health issues - especially spinal problems and underwent surgery for spinal stenosis around 9-10 months ago. It seems like she has spent the year putting her affairs in order and retire on her own terms at 83.

Gooseysgirl · 31/12/2023 17:59

I think it's a great decision by QM - not least because we will be gifted another coronation in the not too distant future 😆

I know QEII wouldn't have abdicated in a million years, but I hope Charles will be more open to the idea when the time comes.

Maireas · 31/12/2023 18:01

Does Denmark have a Coronation? I thought GB was the last country still to do that?

I doubt it very much.
It doesn't mean he won't start to hand over the reins - that started with QEII and Charles some years ago.

Although google tells me it's more of an announcement than a big coronation shindig... but they will surely have a big blingy hooley to celebrate!

Denmark has the most low-key accession ceremonies of all. Daisy was just proclaimed Queen from the balcony of the palace. But that was immediately after her father’s death. In the less sad circumstances of an abdication they may have a gala dinner or similar?

Hopefully a big bling and tiara event.
