Please help me find THE winter coat

I've worn the same winter coat from Jigsaw for about ten years and it's falling apart so I'm ready to invest in a new one, and am happy to spend up to £350 for something good quality to last another ten or so years hopefully. But I just can't find the right one!

My wish list is:
Single breasted
Collar (but not funnel neck)
No belt - I've tried a few and they feel bulky and like I'm wearing a dressing gown
Knee or mid-calf length - I'm 5'4 so anything much longer drowns me
Straight or cocoon type shape
High % wool, ideally 100% and bonus points for recycled/sustainable credentials
Nothing too 'military style' with epaulettes etc
Some texture to the fabric i.e. not super smooth and shiny
Natural colour i.e. some shade of blue, green, brown or beige - love teal
Nothing too crazy in terms of the lining, which rules out a lot of e.g. Ted Baker

This comes pretty close to perfection for me but I can't quite justify the price tag: Gerard Darel Samirah Plain Coat, Blue at John Lewis & Partners

This should tick most of the boxes but for some reason I can't get excited about it: Teal Fran Boucle Coat | WHISTLES |

Would love any other ideas!

I've just retired a jigsaw coat too - I loved it. I'm also short so a lot of coats look great but swamp me. I've just ordered the Johnson coat from Sézane

www.sezane.com/en/product/johnson-coat/camel

It hasn't arrived yet but I'm hopeful having brought from them previously.

Doggymummar · 10/11/2023 11:07

Much cheaper but I love it. I got the teddy bear coat from Uniqlo. John Lewis essentials have them too, so snug fit all your criteria and I get asked all the time where it's from.

Onethingatatime23 · 10/11/2023 12:19

This is mine, I love it.

Relaxed fit too so I can wear a blazer or big jumper underneath it.

Can’t provide links but tried lots that meet your requirements in tk maxx this week all under £150.

I've just bought this one from Seasalt. It reminds me of a coat I had and loved when I was in my 20s.

Get the Gerard Darel coat it is beautiful and ticks all your boxes.

banhmi · 10/11/2023 14:40

Oh wow, just checking back in and thanks so much for the great suggestions - I thought I had done a really good trawl of the obvious places but there are some lovely new options here.

I love the Barbour houndstooth and Seasalt ones in particular so am clearly drawn to fabrics that are a mix of several different colours....

Thank you @EverydayParis for suggesting I should just go with the Gerard Darel one... on a pound per wear basis I've probably spent far more on lesser things so maybe you're right... :)

I'm wearing the seasalt one right now. Here is a close up of the colours. It comes in a more red colourway too.

Just buy the Gerard one in teal. It is pricey, but it is 100 % wool and perfect. If you wear it every winter for ten years, that's real value for money.

banhmi · 10/11/2023 14:54

@ApolloandDaphne That's such a beautiful mix of colours. I'd go for that one, definitely, over the red!

@Ruthietuthie I'm dithering. I might order it to see what colour it is in real life because the photos of it on the model look quite different to the ones of just the coat (I prefer the more greeny shade in the photos with the model).

@banhmi , definitely order it. When it arrives and you try it on, you will know whether it is "perfect, must have it" or whether it can go back.

Check out Holland and Cooper ..just lovely stuff

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/11/2023 16:23

I love the Sezane coat in navy the fit is lovely , slight flared .

But the Gerard Darel one ...I don't know if the model is wearing an too large size but from the back it looks way too bulky .

stringbean · 10/11/2023 16:29

I was also going to suggest Hobbs Tilda; not quite teal but it's not navy either. Would expect a discount for Black Friday

LadyFlumpalot · 10/11/2023 16:34

It might not match your criteria for the shape, but I am OBSESSED with these coats from British Retro. I have a dark grey one with a black collar and it is my favourite thing ever. It's warm, comfortable, fits well and I feel fabulous whenever I wear it.

Check out Hobbs

banhmi · 10/11/2023 17:06

@70isaLimitNotaTarget Hmm yeah I see what you mean. I do like a cocoon shape but you're right it does look a bit bulky from the back. Might be because of the dropped shoulder sleeves?

OP posts:
banhmi · 10/11/2023 17:10

@LadyFlumpalot These are fabulous. Not my style (I am a jeans and trainers girl) but I'd like to try one just for the twirl!

Definitely don't recommend Whistles for winter coats. I spent a good sum on an extremely cozy Whistles coat last year, but barely keeps any cold out at all, and then the buttons all came off. So many comments "oh you look so cozy" but I was freezing.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/11/2023 17:40

too long? too grey?

Itshouldntbethisway · 10/11/2023 18:39

@Ilovewillow this is perfection, you've saved me a looong search! How much is your commission!?! 😀
