New thread, thanks for the brilliant title suggestion, as ever!

@Serenster Yes I said ‘since’ precisely for that reason. I think Diana was an icon of her time but whether she’ll still be talked about 125-150 years from now? Who knows. As you said, it’s quite possible. But it’s not a given, I don’t think - not so much a commentary on Diana herself but more the world today and what it might look like in the future.

I remember I absolutely adored the film about Sissi starring Romy Schneider, which I watched many times as a child. Haven’t seen it since I was about 12!

She did have a terribly tragic life.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 17/11/2023 11:08

I think Meghan herself looks fantastic - beautiful makeup! Agree that the hairstyle is a little too severe. She does seem to favour the two extremes - either very, very severe, or a bit too messy for a formal look (imo). But then Hollywood is Hollywood and that’s obviously where she feels comfortable.

I quite like the dress, think it sits well on her and looks great! Beige does suit her skin tone, and I think this aesthetic fits her personal brand (as I understand it) very well. But I agree that the richer colours also look gorgeous on her and are a bit more interesting to look at.

MrsLeonFarrell · 17/11/2023 11:19

I like Meghan's look from the neck up but I'm not a fan of that dress. The top seems to be from a different outfit than the bottom, as if the designer forgot what they were working on half way through, and the sleeve slipping off her shoulder is too full. I prefer one shoulder frocks to be more closely fitted and that colour is just blah.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 17/11/2023 11:21

I do wonder what was going on with the skirt. But I don't mind the relaxed vibe of the top; the fulness helps with balance as she's quite broad shouldered.

themessygarden · 17/11/2023 11:31

When you see the dress in more detail, it appears the zipper at the back, also asymmetrical like the front seam, is bunched outwards. The skirt flaps are too long and trailing the ground.

The dress is fab, but definitely a few details that take away from it and that zipper would annoy the life out of me if it was something I was wearing..

Argh that really isn't great. As always I'm quite baffled as to why she hasn't started getting her clothing fitted properly. It seems such an obvious thing to do and it looks bad when the details are wrong. Sad

Serenster · 17/11/2023 12:40

An off-the-shoulder neckline with a slouchy, unstructured fit in a ready to wear garment is a high degree of difficulty for any designer, to be fair! Add in the fact that this dress may have been designed to be worn off entirely off the shoulder (see website image, though obviously it’s not 100% certain that this is the same dress) and it’s not hard to see why it may not have sat perfectly.

The posed photo before Meghan arrived at the event looks fab (though still, too long) In the wild and from different angles, you can see all the bunching.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 17/11/2023 12:49

Yes you're right - it was always going to be a challenge with the zip tbf. It does look like it hangs better when it's off both shoulders. And it looks fab on that photo where she's standing by the stairs. I just know I'd be such a perfectionist about it looking right from all angles!

Wonder if it would have been better with a slit at the back rather than a zip all the way up. But then it would have been the mad dress of multiple slits! Or maybe a side zip?

Ah well. I think she looked great on the whole.

justasking111 · 17/11/2023 13:15

Meghan hair would maybe need a relax treatment to hang straight. That's tough on hair so wiser to scrape back. That's why Joan Collins said where possible wear wigs

ChicoryDip · 17/11/2023 13:35

Meghan does look great but, as always, the fit of her evening dresses lets her down.

There's a leather version of her dress and I think it looks better in the more structured material. Meghan's dress just looks a bit wonky which is a real shame.

I presume it's because she is loaned the item so it can't be taken up or fitted to her. Having said that she wore a red dress once that apparently had been fitted and it was still dreadful!!

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 17/11/2023 14:11

Yes that's the most obvious explanation but if that's the case I just don't understand why she'd rather look not quite right almost every time in a borrowed gown, than buy her own things and have them look properly on point. It's a complete mystery to me.

gluenotsoup · 17/11/2023 14:27

I prefer it worn off both shoulders, the back bunching and it being overly long spoils it- bad fit again. But in spite of that she does look great.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 17/11/2023 09:05

Diana had a certain X factor, no question about it! No Royal has come close since in terms of icon status.

But she certainly wore lots of shockers too. That’s what tends to happen when you play with fashion, especially in a decade like the 80s and into the early 90s!

TBH I'm not sure about her having X factor - was it maybe to do with her being the first female member of the Royal family that we were given so much access to ? I did love though when she cut her hair cut short and that black "revenge" dress. She was tall and slim which always helps, let's face it. I went to the exhibition at Kensington a few years back where many of Margaret and the young Queen's dresses were on display and they were simply stunning - of their time of course but there was not the same coverage and exposure in the media . As you said Diana had to contend with the 1980s and 1990s too!

whiteshutters · 17/11/2023 16:10

@ChicoryDip I love that dress in the leather and it also has a better and looser fit on the model with the draping across the stomach. Meghan's is pulled tight across her lower half. Maybe this is where the disconnect works for this dress - she has had it fitted to her hips as if she had gone up a size it would have been even wider across the shoulders.

justasking111 · 17/11/2023 18:08

I remember my granny and mother talking about the royals. They were like film stars. People copied their hair, make up, clothes. They bought the magazines. Philip was like a film star who happened to be a war hero.

My mum had a copy of either Woman or Women's Own from 1981 that covered Charles and Di's wedding. Think she chucked it out after they split up!

Brazilianadventure · 17/11/2023 19:02

Just scrolling and suddenly the POW is opening Children in Need - not sure about the sleeves but I like the colour of her blouse.

themessygarden · 17/11/2023 21:02

I don't think that is a good look on Kate, although the colour of the blouse is lovely, I think her hair looks all wrong for some reason.

I think herself and William must have the same public speaking coach, they both use the same hand gestures, I find it distracting.

locketrocket · 17/11/2023 21:10

Possibly against the grain, but really do not like Meghans dress at all. The model in leather makes it look slightly better, only just.

It's a no from me.

KillingMeDeftly · 17/11/2023 21:12

I like Kate's blouse but I think I'm over the Charlie's Angels hair now.

Edited

With a detailed/busy print hair always looks better up. Well, it does on me anyway 😆

MrsLeonFarrell · 17/11/2023 21:17

Not a fan of Catherine's blouse either. I'm not sure if it's the colour or the rainbows or the big sleeves or the combination but it just seems too much.

Serenster · 17/11/2023 21:18

I love Kate’s blouse - would love to see it paired with the matching trousers, but imagine it’s highly, highly unlikely she bought the co-ord set. Oh well.

GrouchyKiwi · 17/11/2023 21:57

I like the blouse (and most of what she's been wearing the past few days). Agree that an up do would have been better with the blouse, though. Maybe a ponytail so it's not too formal.
