What's classy for nails

gemandjule · 02/11/2023 20:21

I'm travelling to London in a few weeks to see my son. While I'm there I'm meeting his girlfriend's parents for the first time. We're going out to dinner. They are a few years younger and a lot wealthier than me. I have no hangups about that. I'm a confident career professional myself..but they are very wealthy financial services people. I will very much go as myself but do want to get hair and nails done. My style is understated so definitely no bright strong colours, no nail extensions so will be quite short..any recommendations for what's low key and classy in my 50s

Is that a dark streak on your small nail or a trick of the light. If it is a dark line, you might want to get that looked at.

bryceQ · 02/11/2023 22:12

Nudes, navy, certain reds, I also quite like certain coffee tones. I think you have loads of options!

hermioneee · 02/11/2023 22:13

On mine? I think it must be a trick of the light. Definitely no dark streaks on my bare nails.

lwishyouwould · 02/11/2023 22:14

Also a Teddy BIAB here. I have mine natural length and rounded. Definitely not square and not those fucking horrible pointy ones.

Neutral and natural look so much better.

Nepmarthiturn · 02/11/2023 22:15

Just do neat, not too long nails with a french manicure. Classic and simple.

I love them, thanks for you delightful comment ❤️

gracious response to a very rude, thoughtless and pointless statement.

Isometimeswonder · 02/11/2023 22:15

Any colour you like! As long as they're short or short-ish and neat I think you should pick a colour you enjoy.

I think the teddy BIAB is more "me" than string colours.

I googled milky manicures as suggested and liked these, minus the beautiful long fingers and the cool ring 😀

Edited

Yes, exactly like this. Just normal natural nails with a little bit of varnish on and not very long.

I live in London OP and work in the city. The current trend is nude / natural buffed nails. Yes, some women still have extensions or bold colours, but there's a big trend for the neat/ short/ clear or nude or no polish look.

Not you, the OP.

A dark streak can be indicative of a health problem, which is why I thought I would flag it.

Whatever Harriet Westmoreland is doing.

Reading with interest, I usually think subtle and minimal is classy, but the red/burgundy shades are lovely. Maybe give nail art a miss though?

cyclamenqueen · 03/11/2023 07:41

I always have short nails and dark colours give much better definition and look smart, I generally avoid blue or green though. I find the nudes clash with my skin tone, although at the moment I have quite a nice dusky rose colour on .

Thanks @eurochick.. all good. It's just a verical ridge present x years non pigmented. I'm actually a medic myself so appreciate that you spotted it and called it..🙏

Interesting @Bookist. I thought a strong colour would emphasise how short they are... dark blobs on the end of my fingers look 😄

Yes I used to think that. But actually it's the opposite. Dark colours absorb light more so look more defined and slightly narrower.

piscofrisco · 03/11/2023 14:04

I love a rouge noir or cherry red myself and my dd who is very into her nails says it is now back on trend even for the youth (apparently it has not been on trend for as long as she can remember but I have cared not Grin ). She is having it for her big birthday party in December.

Orange or blue nails are not classy in my opinion. A nude colour or a bright/dark red are your best bets, and gels so they're not chipped.

I'm an amateur nail tech and I agree with this. Classy nails are the current trend of milky mani (nearly clear polish), blood red or that kind of nearly black - I do this applying black as a first coat and a "red wine" colour on top.

Any kind of other colour like blue, orange, green and even nail art is not classy. It might look good and fun but it won't give you the impression of "put together".

CarolinaInTheMorning · 03/11/2023 14:21

I'm in the US, so it's sometimes different, but I agree with most of the posters on here. I get my nails done regularly, and they are short slightly rounded, and I always go with a nude most of the year, but for autumn and winter, I tend to choose a dark red.

Good to know!

Fwiw I agree that the milky look is the popular classy look at the moment but I do love a deep red or navy.

Short nails - dark burgundy polish, bright red or a nude.

This

Nicesalad · 03/11/2023 15:07

Short and clean

DameDoom · 03/11/2023 20:47

Rouge Noir shades or one coat of Essie Mademoiselle - doesn’t streak and looks more elegant than the massively overrated Ballet Slippers - always look classy, but you absolutely cannot beat beautifully shaped natural, buffed, short nails with gently pushed back cuticles and well-moisturised hands.

gemandjule · 20/11/2023 15:48

Ok. Nails are done. Hoping this achieves the classy vibe 😀
Just got the venue, The Ham Yard Hotel in Soho. Seems quite boutiquey. Anyone know it??

Ham yard is lovely - pretty and close to Covent Garden
