Does anyone actually feel comfortable in tights and dresses/skirts in autumn/winter?

I have always felt cold and itchy and just generally uncomfortable. I tried it again the other day and felt so irritated.

Plus lots of coats hang awful if you are wearing a skirt.

Does anyone actually feel comfortable and warm in tights and a dress?

I do like dresses in spring/summer and even tights can be bearable in spring when it isn't too cold. I think the cold contributes to the itchy feel.

I think tights ruin the look of a lot of clothes, very few models wear them but it's too cold not to wear them

StarlightLady · 23/10/2023 13:26

I've always been a "dress girl". I've lots of winter weight long sleeved dresses. That is not to say I never wear jeans or leggings but generally I'm in a dress. The plaques come out every winter of course.

It's interesting because my mum once told me that in infant school, I used to refuse to wear trousers. For some reason it has stuck with me.

43ontherocksporfavor · 23/10/2023 16:27

Just bought some Ultimate Comfort tights in Next. Extra deep waistband.

43ontherocksporfavor · 23/10/2023 16:29

@StarlightLady Same! My DM said she’d put me I trousers and find them discarded around the house!

Echobelly · 23/10/2023 16:30

I practically live in skirts/dresses tights and boots in winter!

caramond · 23/10/2023 16:36

Absolutely love them and wear trousers or jeans maybe once a week, otherwise it's dress/skirt and tights.

It sounds like some of the posters have not tried modern tights- I too remember the more itchy and ill-fitting ones from early 2000 and before. But now I only wear Snag, Better or Popsy tights that are properly sized based on both your height and clothes size so they are not saggy or too tight anywhere. And the materials are super soft and yet durable.

BretonBlue · 23/10/2023 16:40

Yes, I do, but it's OK if you don't!

AgathaX · 23/10/2023 16:41

I love skirts/dresses and tights in autumn and winter. Really not a fan of jeans as I find they make my skin itch, especially new or dark coloured jeans, and I get irritated wearing them with socks in winter. I can tolerate them better in summer with bare feet.

We're all different though. Wear what you find comfortable and makes you feel good.

Doesn’t sound like anyone is wearing wool tights which are exponentially warmer than any of the thickest nylon tights.

I'm not in the UK, but it gets cold here in winter (frosty). I find ordinary thick opaque tights too hot sometimes in a heated office, and perfectly fine for walking outside. Wool tights would be far too warm for me.

Spacemoon · 23/10/2023 19:24

I feel at my comfiest in tights and dresses. I love autumn and winter for that!! I think some of you must not have found the right tights for you. What is a good pair for one person, might be awful for another, it's trial and error. I've been recommended loads through the years that others swear by, but when I tried them, they just didn't feel 'right'. I think your size and shape has a lot to do with it.

I'm a 14/16, curvy, average height and for me personally, I will only ever buy tights from New look or Peacocks now as I found they were the best for me.

I don't understand the coat thing either, unless the only style of coat you wear is that awkward weird looking length that sits on your bum, which I personally think look weird regardless of what's underneath.

I have a few pairs. I have a nice pair of fair isle wool tights too and those come out when it's extremely cold.

I have one pair of snag tights left now but I don't find them any better than M & S.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 23/10/2023 21:25

Not read whole thread but last winter I bought M&S fleece lined ones, they are so comfy and amazing!

Also after having children and hitting my forties I always buy large or XL despite being slim. I have long legs and a larger size feels much more comfortable.

I agree with the poster who said wear school tights. Im going to try this. I remember finding my school tights really comfy as a teen and wearing my uniform all evening without needing to get changed.

WinchGirl · 24/10/2023 08:31

I pretty much wear midi dresses/skirts from autumn to winter with tights every weekday. Tights range from 10 to 60 denier depending how cold it is and I don't really get the hate for tights. Mine seem to be fine, not itchy, saggy or any other unpleasant feelings involved. If you get the correct size they all seem OK to me and that is a range from a 5 pack in the supermarket to single expensive pairs from department stores. I guess I must be lucky. Wear jeans/jeggings at the weekend though!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 24/10/2023 08:37

Another vote for school tights, I wear grey ones from Next or M&S, also sparkly grey ones (for Fridays, obvs)

concernedmumhelp · 24/10/2023 09:48

It'd funny people liking school tights, my daughter in the last years at primary school didn't like the school tights, she wanted very large, stretchy, thick tights. So I tried Boden adult tights, really thick cable ones with lots of elastanne, greatly reduced in the sale, and she much preferred those. Then I found some more on ebay, new but about half price, £10ish I think. They lasted very well and still fit her now.

Pythonesque · 24/10/2023 19:43

Can I just say thank you to everyone on this thread. I'm now wearing my first ever pair of snag tights having finally ordered some - I've looked at them before but always procrastinated. I'm tall enough that I've never been the right size for standard XL, and never remembered reliably which brands were best; and then I put weight on. Suffice to say I'm not going to have the baggy ankles problem some posters have mentioned. If I lose weight I can "aspire" to one size smaller than their largest...

Divebar2021 · 25/10/2023 08:22

Well that’s good news @Pythonesque - I don’t remember having wrinkling with them either. If I remember right Snag were different because they stretched in the length and width and traditional tight manufacture only stretched one way. So if you’re slim you would have fewer problems finding regular tights comfortable.

coxesorangepippin · 25/10/2023 12:49

This thread is making me think I should have worn a dress

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/10/2023 14:13

I am wearing those tights under a dress right now - they are very comfortable.

Mirabai · 25/10/2023 17:10

I’m currently wearing Autograph merino wool tights 100 Denier - very warm.

IhearyouClemFandango · 25/10/2023 19:24

Better tights are great. I've gone off snag of late

JaneFarrier · 08/12/2023 13:42

@DelphiniumBlue I am in the leggings and socks camp and wear wool socks because my feet are always cold (this is the main reason for picking leggings and socks over tights). I hand-knit mine so they're medium thick. Under ankle boots, if I don't want them to show at all I just put them on before the leggings and then the tops get hidden! If I don't have to be very dressy I colourmatch them to my dress and don't hide them (but I am not the sleekest of dressers anyway...)

JaneFarrier · 08/12/2023 13:48

What I don't get about stockings is... does everyone who wears them have a thigh gap? And if not, don't your thighs rub?

I surely don't and haven't been able to go barelegged without risking chafing since I was a teenager. It's a pain. Even nylon tights don't always save me from it. Snag chub rub shorts (really dislike the name, but love the product) work well in summer, though!
