Does anyone actually feel comfortable in tights and dresses/skirts in autumn/winter?

I have always felt cold and itchy and just generally uncomfortable. I tried it again the other day and felt so irritated.

Plus lots of coats hang awful if you are wearing a skirt.

Does anyone actually feel comfortable and warm in tights and a dress?

I do like dresses in spring/summer and even tights can be bearable in spring when it isn't too cold. I think the cold contributes to the itchy feel.

If I could find any nice dresses that would be a start!

I don't know if manufacturers are catering for global warming or what, but they keep churning out flimsy viscose dresses 12 months of the year, sometimes with short sleeves.

I looked at Nobody's Child recently (as well as almost every other brand) and they looked like summer dresses. They surely realise women want to be able to go OUT in dresses?

IncomingTraffic · 22/10/2023 12:30

I love skirts/dresses with tights. I live in that all autumn/winter.

Not snag tights though. I bloody hate snag tights. They do not fit me and wash poorly.

BaronessBomburst · 22/10/2023 12:34

I wear a warm jersey or knitted midi dress (something with weight to it), a full length slip underneath, and either opaque tights and shoes, or leggings with socks and boots. Much warmer than jeans!

Yes! Because I like that I can put no thought at all into dressing.

Black tights - tick
Dress(any) - tick

Outfit sorted. Love my Heist tights.

This is me.

With a M&S full length Cool Comfort slip as an extra layer and a pair of boots.

theatrical · 22/10/2023 12:34

Yes, very warm and comfortable. I think layering can be key. At coldest times I add long socks over tights, and under long boots. Also an under slip dress (M & S sell these) under top/skirt or dress.

BaronessBomburst · 22/10/2023 12:35

We have three M&S slips in a row!

Lemonyfuckit · 22/10/2023 12:38

I'm a dresses and tights person mainly - I'm short and dumpy and would love to wear trousers but there aren't many that look good on me.

I do however dislike anything tight around my middle - that plus sitting at a desk all day gives me bloated tummy and stomach ache. I find M&S 100 denier heat gen tights a bit more comfortable/ less restrictive in that respect but I'm intrigued by everyone recommending Snag tights - would you say they're good for not being uncomfortable round your stomach?

concernedmumhelp · 22/10/2023 12:39

I don't wear an M and S slip. I do wear tights or leggings and socks under my ankle length denim skirt, with a 90s style slit down the front. All from M and S. Plus a warm jacket and scarf, or Landsend parka if really cold.

Mind you, I am down south.

ValuableLimeLesson · 22/10/2023 12:39

Love dresses over layers in winter. I'm usually to be found wearing some sort of long sleeved top and then either fleece lined tights or thick leggings with socks - then I stick a dress on over the top and suddenly am perceived as having made an effort, when I'm really dressed in comfy clothes with something covering it all.

I also find that leggings/thick tights with a slip and a dress over the top (and solid boots) are significantly warmer than most trousers.

I've migrated to dresses and tights in middle age for the same reasons. I do have some trousers but often find them uncomfortable for all day wear. I like Snag tights, the best I've found so far. They can be pulled up high which avoids that being cut in half feeling.

ValuableLimeLesson · 22/10/2023 12:45

I should have specified that my slips are also from M&S Grin

olympicsrock · 22/10/2023 12:46

I wear opaque tights and a stretchy jersey dress most winter days. Super comfortable

IME they’re baggy around the ankles no matter what size you get. They’re like Nora batty tights.

I hate tights toes, and my toes always go through them. Snag footless tights are a game changer.

Trainer socks can work. If wearing boots, proper socks will keep your ankles toasty.

Caspianberg · 22/10/2023 13:19

Uniqlo often do heavy weighed winter skirts as reasonable prices. I have a lined jersey thick cotton type from there, it’s about 8 years old and washes up great and gets dug out again every year for cold weather

DelphiniumBlue · 22/10/2023 17:08

Can I ask, what socks people are wearing with the boots and dresses? I'm finding don't like the feel of knee boots, so socks to go with DMs/chelsea boots and midi dresses.

LoobyDop · 22/10/2023 17:29

I find thin tights unbearably uncomfortable and would only ever wear them for a rare formal event in summer. But opaque tights, either the smooth or woolly kind, are fine, and I wear them loads with unstructured dresses in winter. I kind of agree about skirts, though. They require all the faff of matching to a top, without the comfort of trousers.

I don't like M&S opaque tights anymore, they seem too big, thin and stretchy now, and fall down and go wrinkly, as you say. I'm quite small, so I bought the smallest size. Still too big.

I think the ones I have now are some Italian brand. Don't fall down 👍

BrightYellowButtercup · 22/10/2023 17:51

Yep. Snag tights. Or leggings and boots.

SallyWD · 22/10/2023 17:57

Yes I do. I feel really comfortable. The only other I wear is jeans or cords. As I get older (I'm 48) I'm starting to find jeans quite uncomfortable and restrictive.

itsgettingweird · 22/10/2023 18:16

I wear leggings or knit tights.

MIDI dresses, mid calf wedge boots and mid calf coat.

Agree with those saying layers are warmer.

I haven’t bought M&S tights for a couple of years. The last time I did they all laddered the instant anyone so much as looked at them too closely.

Snag tights even in the smallest size are baggy round the feet in unattractive abc uncomfortable ways. And they bobble in the wash.

Finding decent tights is so bloody hard.

Mirabai · 22/10/2023 22:09

Jumper dress + wool tights and boots is my winter stable, so comfy.

I buy merino wool tights in different colours from John Lewis, Falke, Trasparenze - so much warmer than the thickest nylon tights.
