Does anyone actually feel comfortable in tights and dresses/skirts in autumn/winter?

I have always felt cold and itchy and just generally uncomfortable. I tried it again the other day and felt so irritated.

Plus lots of coats hang awful if you are wearing a skirt.

Does anyone actually feel comfortable and warm in tights and a dress?

I do like dresses in spring/summer and even tights can be bearable in spring when it isn't too cold. I think the cold contributes to the itchy feel.

Yes! Because I like that I can put no thought at all into dressing.

Black tights - tick
Dress(any) - tick

Outfit sorted. Love my Heist tights.

I’m with you OP. Tights are uncomfortable, itchy, and my toes go through them. I particularly dislike coloured tights, like you’re a jester or an elf. I don’t like the idea of material flapping round me, it’s drafty. I don’t like ankle boots with dresses or skirts (too short legs for that to look right on me). But I don’t like dresses and skirts in summer either, they make me feel try too hard and fussy and. they either accentuate my stomach and or chest, basically highlight my disproportionate shape, or swamp me like a sack.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 22/10/2023 10:01

I wear dresses or skirts to work every day, so no, not uncomfortable or itchy for me! I'm not really a cold person, but opaque tights, midi dress and knee high boots feels warmer to me than trousers.

PortalooSunset · 22/10/2023 10:01

Heat holders thermal tights. Very soft and comfortable, as well as toasty warm. Don't bobble on repeated washing. Downside is I think they only come in dark colours (though I sometimes put a pair of colourful Snags over the top).

Parakeetamol · 22/10/2023 10:03

Since dc2 I hate trousers. I wear leggings around the house but out and about I much prefer dresses and tights. I wear shaping ones to pull in the mum tum and feel so much more put together than in high waisted trousers.

MammaTo · 22/10/2023 10:07

I love my tights. 80 denier + only, I don’t like the more sheer ones on me because I have freckly legs and they look odd - but I love that they come so high up like sucky in knickers.

GellerYeller · 22/10/2023 10:10

I’m working in a converted industrial building on a floor above a warehouse area with doors open 24/7. So in the winter months it’s like sitting on top of a block of ice. The cold literally comes up through the floor. I went out and bought loads of thermal leggings and socks, plus some thermal tights(tenner in M and S, you can pick them up in Lidl though they’re very opaque).
I am not short so always buy tights a size up. One of my colleagues is constantly hoiking hers back up!
With dresses and skirts the leggings aren’t an option for me but I can’t fathom what sort of coat doesn’t work over them?!

Divebar2021 · 22/10/2023 10:11

I think tights can be uncomfortable - they can twist, they don’t come up high enough at the waist and they can sag at the crotch so I understand that. They’re the wrong tights! People rave about Snag tights because a lot of those problems are solved.

The coat not hanging properly is a different issue that I don’t understand. I’ve got many many coats… a lot in wool blends and I can’t think of one that couldn’t go over a skirt or dress. That being said I only wear midi length skirts - if you’re talking knee length then you really need a coat the same length or longer imo.

WorkCleanRepeat · 22/10/2023 10:11

I find tights and dresses far more comfortable and warmer than wearing trousers.

Ffsnotaconference · 22/10/2023 10:15

Love tights and dresses in colder weather. So much more comfy

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 22/10/2023 10:18

Yes, very comfortable! I don't find tights itchy (maybe you have a sensitivity to something in the fabric, or your washing powder?). And I find tights and a dress warmer than anything else really.

Mouseplant · 22/10/2023 10:24

I have some sensory processing issues and can't stand the feel of tights, which is annoying as they are so great for winter outfits.

UnevenBalance · 22/10/2023 10:52

A dress (midi/maxi) + thick tights are warm enough for me.

I hated tights until I tried the ones from Snagtight.
They are feeling itchy and uncomfortable because there are not the right size! No issue since then.

You also need to avoid the light flimsy type of dress though. And cotton. These are great for the summer, not in the middle of winter. A thicker material (like they do with trousers btw!), maybe lined, works well. I personally prefer wool but they are often dry clean which is a pain (I don’t buy those)

Medlady · 22/10/2023 11:03

I haven’t got on with tights since they put Lycra into them (so 30 years then!).

Pythonesque · 22/10/2023 11:14

I'm another tights and skirts person, gave up on trousers when I was about 19 because they never fit (and I'd never liked jeans anyway). My main problem is I need to get hold of some tights that fit properly and have a chance of staying up. I'm tall enough that I always needed XL tights, and unfortunately nowadays I need XL width wise as well so I do need to look at some of the specialist sites and try some bigger ones...

Last winter I wore black leggings more than tights, sometimes leggings over tights if it was really cold.

Mytholmroyd · 22/10/2023 11:18

Another vote for snag tights - they don't do that annoying thing where there isn't quite enough room across the crotch/top of my thighs - just cut better I think.

Caspianberg · 22/10/2023 11:20

Calzodonia thick tights, wool blend. Have worn every winter for about 10 years.

It much warmer in thick tights, warm below knee wool skirt and long warm boots, than it is in jeans. it’s -10/-15 most winters and snow here, I rarely wear Jeans unless just in car and going indoors.

SwearyBetty · 22/10/2023 11:23

I’m always freezing and my skin gets extra dry and itchy during autumn/winter. I usually wear the thin Uniqlo heat tech under thicker tights to help with the itchiness but I’ve been following another warm winter clothes thread where silk was suggested. I’m going to try silk instead.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/10/2023 11:26

I am. Warm black tights, a pretty solid skirt (cord, wool, denim) and boots. If it's cold, I put thick foot socks over my tights before putting on my boots.

stopmefeelingsick · 22/10/2023 11:28

Stockings were a game changer for me. Thick soft ones. Took me a while to find the perfect fit (tights tights tights was the website I think)

I used to have a cheap suspender belt (for bedroom use mostly) but it was rubbish. Bought one with six straps with metal clasps and they never pinged off once.

Also no wrestling with tights every time I wanted a wee!!

Marthawhochanged · 22/10/2023 11:29

Hardly worn tights since pregnancy, too many rashes and uncomfortable dry patches.
Stockings and cotton shorts style pants. Knee length skirts are really not a 'flashing' problem in everyday office life. I have found.

I don't prefer to wear dresses and haven't liked any that are on the market for years now, but I agree that they can be much warmer than trousers or jeans in winter, especially paired with cashmere or merino tights, boots and a good, long coat, whether smart or for all weathers.

I once dried much, much faster having dressed this way in a ferocious rainstorm than I ever did in heavy weight denim or flapping trousers. In fact the tights dried almost immediately.

The only time that I could not dress this way in winter was when living in the lake district. It was so chronically damp that the cold cut through in an entirely different way, demanding less wool and cotton, in favour of fleece and 'technical' fabrics. That was something else Grin

ATerrorofLeftovers · 22/10/2023 12:09

Yes, but the items have to be right.

Tights have to be right for your size and body shape, so they stay up all day and you’re not grappling with a crotch hanging down by your knees by lunchtime. They need to be warm also.

Footwear needs to be boots not shoes, with a thickish sole and insulated lining or insoles.

A long enough coat solves the problem of hemlines showing.

MerelyPlaying · 22/10/2023 12:23

Another vote for Snag tights here - well worth the money.

I usually wear opaque tights or socks-and-leggings with boots in winter. I have varicose veins which I’m self-conscious about so don’t tend to wear skirts in summer, but I can wear these with a short (knee length) skirt or a dress and boots. Love it, although I wear trousers most of the time in the summer and at weekends, I somehow feel more free in a skirt.
