Does anyone actually feel comfortable in tights and dresses/skirts in autumn/winter?

I have always felt cold and itchy and just generally uncomfortable. I tried it again the other day and felt so irritated.

Plus lots of coats hang awful if you are wearing a skirt.

Does anyone actually feel comfortable and warm in tights and a dress?

I do like dresses in spring/summer and even tights can be bearable in spring when it isn't too cold. I think the cold contributes to the itchy feel.

Yes I do. I feel really comfortable. The only other I wear is jeans or cords. As I get older (I'm 48) I'm starting to find jeans quite uncomfortable and restrictive.

I’ve never found jeans comfortable and now I’m 53 I only wear them if I’m going out.

OhDoSitDownAndShutUp · 22/10/2023 22:12

I hate wearing tights, and only wear skirts or dresses either in the warm weather, with sandals, or with socks and boots in the winter - longer skirts, obviously

Screamingabdabz · 22/10/2023 22:15

As someone with a big tummy - dresses are always more comfortable. Trousers or jeans always dig into the waist, ride up at the crotch and flap about the legs. Short doses only for me. Dresses and skirts with tights always look better imo too.

GettingStuffed · 22/10/2023 22:17

I hate tights, they always catch on my nails and they never fit both waist/ hips or lengths. I wear leggings with boots instead

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 22/10/2023 22:19

I find jeans uncomfortable. I don't mind tights if they're the right size - I wear XL even though I'm really a L. I like thick tights - Asda have some that are thick and cottony. I will wear leggings if I want a pattern or brighter colour. I like skirts fine but a good thick dress is really comfy.

givemeasunnyday · 23/10/2023 07:17

I think a skirt/dress and thick tights is warmer than trousers are in cold weather. It's what I used to wear to work every day in the colder seasons. I've never experienced itchy tights!

43ontherocksporfavor · 23/10/2023 07:21

Smooth opaque tights have never been itchy for me.

FourStringsNoWaiting · 23/10/2023 09:26

I read somewhere (quite possibly on MN) that moisturising your legs before putting tights on can prevent itching

Another vote for snag tights - it's true about the bagginess around the ankles but depending on the boots you're wearing they won't show so it doesn't have to be an issue (unless it's a sensory thing)

schooloflostsocks · 23/10/2023 09:34

Merino wool tights are lovely and warm plus jersey dresses are the most comfortable things I own

DeathRattleDazzle · 23/10/2023 09:39

I can't wear jeans at all now, pretty much the only trousers I wear in winter are stretchy cord jeggings or thick/fleece lined leggings. I wear dresses and skirts almost all of the rest of the time.

Honestly a knitted dress, tights and boots is one of the absolute joys of winter to me - I have so many and love them all!

DeathRattleDazzle · 23/10/2023 09:40

Agree with this - I go at least one size up from the lies on the box.

Angrycat2768 · 23/10/2023 09:44

This is literally all I wear in the autumn/winter- Thermal tights and dresses! I have a variety of knee length woolly dresses.that I wear. I t is so easy to just chuck on a dress than it is to get trousers, the right top/ jumper etc and people think you have dressed up straight away!

nodogz · 23/10/2023 11:00

Size up! Tights need to be big if you have thighs and a bottom. I have a small waist but big bottom so need to buy xl. You get quite good at judging the fabric and stretch and some places will fit you better than others. If they fall down a bit due to the waist being big I stick a pair of pants over the top superman style! Smile

I also have a little slip from primark so that helps with static and cling especially on newly washed clothes. Also don't tumble dry them (obvious but we do our washing together and mr nodogz tumbles everything)

nodogz · 23/10/2023 11:03

And coats need choosing on length of skirt. I go short fitted or long straight cut with knee, midi and maxi. Mid thigh or flared looks weird (but nice with trousers)

Biker jackets are a classic for a reason!

drspouse · 23/10/2023 11:08

Yes - Falke tights, Scrundies pants and I'm all nicely held in and comfy. I can even keep a couple of neutral summer dresses in my winter wardrobe and wear them with boots and a cosy cardigan.

I can't wear tights for more than half a day. Itchy, crotch sagging, sweaty, restrictive arrggh! I wear leggings under dresses, or long socks and boots. Down with tights!

What tights are you buying???!!

Spudlet · 23/10/2023 11:11

Tights always fall down on me. I size up because I’m tall but then they don’t stay up, or I get the right waist size but they’re too short. I always like the way they look, but hate how they feel 😔

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 23/10/2023 11:17

I haven't worn skirts for years, find them too restrictive round my waist, but I do wear dresses a lot in the winter, always casual dresses, sweater, jersey or shirt dresses just above my knees with thick tights . Sometimes with leggings, but I prefer tights .

In summer I wear a jersey midaxi for things like pub lunches and sundresses when I'm on holiday, but otherwise my legs get cold so I'm more likely to wear trousers. I haven't worn 10/15 denier tights for maybe around 20 years. I don't go to 'posh' events, and when I've needed something smarter at work I've always worn trousers .

theatrical · 23/10/2023 11:18

Falke tights are very good, I agree, though I think they're expensive. I bought a couple of pairs years ago.

I've never found jeans comfortable, jeggings are your friend!

BigPussyEnergy · 23/10/2023 11:38

I have knitted maternity tights so they don’t dig in around my waist! I pull them right up to my bra line for an extra layer of warmth and they help dresses hang nicely that way too. For me it’s my winter outfit of choice, short jersey or drapey dress, possibly a cardigan or jumper over, and a scarf if I’m being fancy, thick tights, potentially an extra pair of socks and long boots. Cosy!!

greengreengrass25 · 23/10/2023 11:43

I do wear skirts in Winter with opaque tights

Sometimes they are more effort to style than a pair of trousers as you get bulkiness around waist

I usually wear a vest top under my tops

I like dresses too

UnevenBalance · 23/10/2023 12:01

@Holly60 , @Spudlet , snag tights!!

They REALLY make the whole difference.

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/10/2023 12:56

Bad tights can ruin your day. M&S autograph do seamless opaque tights that are great. Also fine cotton knit ones that are nice and warm.

Base layers are the key. I wear cotton midi pants and a cotton cami vest tucked in to the tights, so the waist band of the tights is not directly on the flesh of my waist.

Gowlett · 23/10/2023 13:10

I have coats to match every outfit, I love dresses.
Need to upgrade my tights supply, nice tips here!
