Seriously, am I meant to be wearing suntan lotion every day?

It seems that I am doing something really wrong here, because I am not wearing SPF every day. I've tried to find one that is light, and in the past I have had face creams and foundations with SPF 15 in them, but I just can't seem to tolerate getting up in the morning and slapping on sun tan lotion under my makeup before I go out in the winter. It would break me out in greasy spots.

Am I doomed? I am wearing toner, serum, and moisturiser, but not putting a layer of SPF on. I know it is about UV rays I can't see, but I don't have many wrinkles or sun damage as I've had my skin analysed tested.

Men don't and no one lectures them.

It's just another way the S+B industry try to rinse money out of women. Deep seated misogyny.

Just ignore.

Men who care about their skin do!

See, that's the sort of paranoid bitter resentful obsessive MNer misandry that makes me flee a lot of threads. I will hide this one in a moment, too.

To OP: what does doomed mean to you? Most people don't organise their whole life around avoiding wrinkles (or sun cancer). Do (did) you also

never smoke (anything)
always eat a terrific diet
always strive to get plenty of sleep
avoid any skin treatment that can damage skin
stay out of direct sun
choose your ethnicity & parents so you could inherit 'good skin'?

I would wager that most British women do not apply SPF stuff daily, and yet so many have great skin anyway, because they simply don't get outside much & never smoked.

greenhydrangea · 24/09/2023 09:27

I can't bear the stench of the chemicals in them. They've discontinued all my favourite cheapish and easily purchased options with physical/mineral compositions and/or substituted foul-smelling chemicals that are not masked by the horrible perfumes. Not sure how anyone can bear to wear them.

Divebar2021 · 24/09/2023 09:29

Well I’ve been wearing an SPF since I was about 25 - and I’m now 53. It’s very easy to find moisturisers with them in. There are also sprays you can use over your makeup. This is all not new information so I’m not sure what you have issue with. If you don’t want to wear it don’t wear it… no one else will object.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 24/09/2023 09:30

In order for them not to be unpleasant to wear I find you need to spend a bit more. I use La Roche Posay Anthelios fluid which is not at all greasy but it's about £20.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 24/09/2023 09:39

You don't necessarily need a specific sun cream everyday. I use a moisturiser with SPF all year round and only add a separate sunscreen (a spray on) when I am going to be spending lots of time in the sun.

MattDamon · 24/09/2023 09:41

I just make sure my moisturiser has a min. of 15 SPF and wear that. I would only wear actual sun screen if I were going to be outside all day (i.e. on holiday). My skin looks great at nearly 40.

I mostly WFH and would never lay around in the sun though, so your lifestyle might require something different.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 24/09/2023 09:43

I do.

My dad has skin cancer and frequently has to have chunks of it cut from his head. (This is the same man who put his reddish-brown arms next to my white ones and tell me I should go out in the sun more.)

I’ve not long started a new job and there’s a man there who’s lost most of his nose to skin cancer.

I put it on over moisturiser but under primer. I think it’s worth it for the benefits it brings.

Ichangedmynameonce · 24/09/2023 09:43

I often wear but not always.

I find it confusing, because sun screen should be applied every 3 hours or so, but if you put make up on after how do you then reapply sun screen?

I've tried the garnier (I think) over make up one, but I looked like I had white powder all over my face!

DH does.

”deep seated misogyny” Jesus Christ! 🤣🤣🤣

We all wear SPF 50 because of the science
surrounding UV rays being harmful and pollution in the air.

TheOGCCL · 24/09/2023 09:47

Wearing SPF50 is what a dermatologist would recommend and imo there are plenty of good options out there. I think in the UK during the winter months, there’s no need to be too obsessive. Like many things it’s up to individuals to decide what they want to do and it’s a lot dependant on genetics.

greenhydrangea · 24/09/2023 09:47

Yes, it's a basic moisturizer with SPF 15 I am talking about - the stench of the chemicals now is unbearable.

violetcuriosity · 24/09/2023 09:49

It's so easy to get affordable moisturisers that have factor 50. Look at tropic, body shop

Lemonpledge · 24/09/2023 09:51

I use spf 50 daily and reapply in the afternoon (don't wear foundation), because of skin cancer prevention and for reduced wrinkles/sun spots. However you're unlikely to be doomed, just start using now if you want to.

stardust777 · 24/09/2023 09:51

I struggle to wear spf everyday - I'd definitely wear it if I were going to be spending lots of time outdoors, or when I'm not working from home. My favourite chemical spf is Beauty of Joseon rice probiotic. However, I've now made the switch to mineral suncreen and using Hero superlight sunscreen. It isn't perfect though (slight white cast on darker skin tones) but will repurchase for the benefits.

I usually have sunglasses in my handbag (to help stave off further wrinkles and dark circles).

ElleLeopine · 24/09/2023 09:52

Nivea Q10. SPF 30. Cheap as chips. Great moisturiser. Smells fine. In the trolley whilst doing weekly shop at Tesco. Couldn't be easier.

LadyLapsang · 24/09/2023 09:53

I wear a factor 30 or 50 everyday on my face, neck and décolletage. It really makes a difference. I now also wear a sun hat in the garden or on holiday when it’s hot.

LemonRedwood · 24/09/2023 09:54

I wear a cc cream with SPF 25 all year round. In summer, I also use a SPF 50 suncream on top of that but under my make up if I'm wearing any. The sun cream makes quite a good make up primer.

Silverballet · 24/09/2023 09:54

I wear a standard pot of moisturiser with SPF15 (Olay) which I buy from the supermarket, year round, and then top it up with a face SPF (Clinique) in the summer months and on holiday. I've tried many different brands of SPF15 moisturiser but always go back to Olay.

No clogged pores and my skin is pretty much wrinkle free.

greenhydrangea · 24/09/2023 09:55

Bought some of this, after they discontinued Vital Soja (with mineral) - it stinks.

Perhaps I am hypersensitive. Truly an unbearable stench.

NewbieSM · 24/09/2023 10:02

I mean you don't HAVE to wear spf if you don't want to, but if you are wearing makeup and other skincare I can't see why it's so much extra effort when the benefits are so high. There are so many excellent spf options available now that don't have the awful smell or sticky consistency or white cast. I live in Australia where we have the highest rate of melanoma in the world. Almost everyone I know man or woman wears spf 50 and a hat everyday. Not just for vanity reasons but because I don't fancy getting chunks of flesh cut out of my body or dying of cancer. Have a look at Australian sunscreens, best in the world and many affordable options with elegant formulas. Ultra Violette has many different ones to suit different skin types and lifestyles. I use they spray over my makeup or a mineral sunscreen powder to reapply during the day.

herethereandeverywhere · 24/09/2023 10:04

I did wear spf every day and ended up with a severe vitamin D deficiency. I do wear it when the sun is harsh enough to burn but not every day.

What's the difference between chemical and mineral and is one better than the other?

Teddleshon · 24/09/2023 10:10

If I’m spending a lot of time outdoors I wear it. If not I don’t.
