Seriously, am I meant to be wearing suntan lotion every day?

It seems that I am doing something really wrong here, because I am not wearing SPF every day. I've tried to find one that is light, and in the past I have had face creams and foundations with SPF 15 in them, but I just can't seem to tolerate getting up in the morning and slapping on sun tan lotion under my makeup before I go out in the winter. It would break me out in greasy spots.

Am I doomed? I am wearing toner, serum, and moisturiser, but not putting a layer of SPF on. I know it is about UV rays I can't see, but I don't have many wrinkles or sun damage as I've had my skin analysed tested.

I use spf 30 or 50 instead of moisturiser every day when it's sunny. So it's not an extra step or an extra product. It's no different to applying moisturiser. In the winter I might use a moisturiser without spf instead, especially if when it's dark in morning when I go to work and dark when I come home. I figure there's not enough UV exposure to do much damage.

We are all doomed
We age
Society will just need to deal

Britpopbaby · 24/09/2023 14:39

I wear it nearly every day. I buy either the Garnier 50 plus cream or the fluid. Both pretty inexpensive.

Ofcourse, it’s not just about wrinkles though.

I had dark patches on my face though, enough that it looked like I hadn’t blended my makeup.
15 years ago I started wearing SPF 50 and within a couple of years they had gone. I now have no need for any facial makeup.

Then there’s skin cancer obviously.

A lot of people in this country are vitamin D deficient, which can cause multiple health issues - I think this is more of a risk than skin cancer for most months in the UK. Obviously avoiding extensive exposure to strong sun is important, but you do need some sunshine.

gingercat02 · 24/09/2023 13:28

I honestly have never met anyone in RL who does this.
I wear a facial suncream on holiday or if it's more than 20°C in the UK and I'm going to be outside ALL day. Otherwise, not. SPF 25 in my moisturiser and 15 in my foundation. Good enough for me.

You clearly don’t know any readheads. 😂 I’ve got to wear spf50 everyday, even if it’s overcast. I’ve got less than 5 mins outside without spf before I’m burnt to a crisp. 🥵

That is not due to wearing SPF though. It's because the UK sun is not strong enough during the winter to generate vitamin D.

But when it is strong enough to generate Vit D, you want to make sure you are.

Light skinned people need about 12 minutes of sunlight a day. It’s not a reason to avoid sunblock.

And vitamin D deficiency can be treated with a pill. Melanoma kills - mortality rates are improving but still too high and the treatment is gruelling.

BeretRaspberry · 24/09/2023 15:38

I use it instead of moisturiser. So wash face, Klairs moisturising toner, serum, Altruist SPF50 face fluid. I use Tret (on a night) though so there’s more of a reason. That said, even if I didn’t use Tret I’d probably still use the SPF.

It’s no extra work for me.

Anatomyofawaffle · 24/09/2023 15:41

I wear factor 50 if I’m going out and about even in winter now, I never used to be so religious with it but after learning more about skin cancer through my job I am more careful now. It takes a minute to put on it’s hardly a chore is it.

Vitamin D pills seem to be very ineffective - sunshine is the best way. There is definitely a balance - of course if the sun is strong you need protection.

I use a vitamin D and K2 spray, and have my vitamin D levels tested (have a thyroid disorder) and it's always fine.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/09/2023 16:00

I wear moisturiser with spf every day. In the summer I wear sun cream if it's sunny. I live in a particularly wet and cloudy part of the UK and on work days I spend no time outside. Car door to door. Inside a building all day.

I'm not sure my face has ever burned. The rest of me, yes, many times (child of the 70s with parents who thought a tan was essential to show off from the holidays) but I'm very good with SPF on my body now but only on my face on v hot days.

StoneColdAlibi · 24/09/2023 16:09

This one is great, I just use it instead of a day moisturiser.

As a previous poster said, since using a daily SPF my hyperpigmentation has disappeared. Well worth it for me.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/09/2023 16:11

I'd be pushed to get 12 minutes of sunshine a day for more than about 30 days a year where I live Sad. I have started taking vit D.

You can’t get enough vitamin D from the sun in this country between around Oct - March. So everyone should supplement.

Then in the summer months I expose large areas of skin (better for absorption than the face) so legs and arms for a good 20 minutes preferably around lunchtime without burning. But protect my face with a hat and spf.

Therefore I don’t need to expose my face to get vitamin D. I use tretinoin so SPF 50 every day and I’m outside quite a bit.

If you care about ageing then UVA rays are present at the same strength all year round and penetrate windows and glass. If it’s skin cancer then you just need it in the summer months to avoid burning.

Springduckling · 24/09/2023 16:57

I have begun to use moisturiser that contains SPF. Am over 50 and seem to know an increasing number of people who have one or other type of skin cancer.

Was using an m and s one, this was very nice and light. Now using a nivea one.

FelixDoublyDelicious · 24/09/2023 17:00

Also sunglasses that protect eye area. I wear them even if it is not suny

Men don't and no one lectures them.

It's just another way the S+B industry try to rinse money out of women. Deep seated misogyny.

Just ignore.

Erm. What makes you think 'men' don't??
