Had another unsuccessful trip to the shops

I’m desperate for some new clothes, but just can’t find anything the suits me or I like.

The shops are filled with wide leg suit trousers, knitted long dresses and clumpy boots.

any bought anything good lately?

I scour charity shops, I can sew so can alter stuff. I also buy lots in the teen boys section. So many women’s clothes are over frilly and flowery at the moment.

Passerillage · 23/09/2023 12:19

I’m turning 45 and yesterday I wore wide legged burnt orange cords (Levi’s), a slim green M&S cashmere jumper tucked loosely in, slim leather biker jacket (ancient topshop), chunky red scarf, trainers. Today still in my pyjamas. :)

I’m going with Dark Academia this autumn as my unifying theme. My advice is to pick an aesthetic and run with it, rather than buying individual unrelated items.

checkedcloth · 23/09/2023 12:23

I literally do not know where to start. Not helped by the fact I have a menopause middle, I have gained weight in the area.

Charity shops and Vinted here too for most things.

At home I wear either good thick leggings or skinny jeans with boat neck T-shirts or big baggy sweaters. I like the US college type sweaters from Vinted. Either roll the Jean legs up and wear with Vegas, or have skinnies with DMs or clumpy work boots (Shoezone do a fab black pair of fake Caterpillars for about £25). If I feel the need to be a bit smarter then I tuck in a baggier but nice jumper.

At work it’s either knee length shirt style dresses with some form of belt, or cropped trousers with a nice top and a jacket.

Im 5’1 with a bit of a mum tum so feel these shapes do ok on me.

checkedcloth · 23/09/2023 12:31

I am pretty time poor unfortunately, so ideally I’m looking for a good on line option.

I think I’m just lusting after an era when I looked my best - around 2010. Lovely skinny jeans (that now look dated) pistol boots…great time.

Shh still in bed, but in a few minutes post shower I will be wearing

Grey hair with purple tones (shampoo)

Levis

Either black Cuban heel boots, or orange suede ones, with either a black jumper or a bright orange one, and black bikers jacket.

59 and three months….

I mainly buy second hand now to seek out better quality for less £. I like a lot of Cos, Kin, Arket, Finisterre, Anthropologie, Uniqlo, Community Clothing and go for fabrics such as denim, linen, cotton and wool and like the drape of Tencel/Lyocell/Modal fabrics, to. I search eg Vinted for midi dress/jumpsuit then start filtering by size, material etc to explore brands I might not have heard of so tend to go for what I like the look of rather than where it's from.

I like Scandi styles, pretty functional type cuts with not so much fuss and frills. Not for everyone, but would be dull if we were all the same. Picked up a lovely Finery denim midi dress for a tenner that will be great for this autumn/winter with tights/boots (looking for a nice chunky brown leather belt to wear with it). Bought a beautiful cashmere wrap from Johnston's of Elgin for a bargain that I know I'll use all the time in my freezing office this winter! A really flattering Autograph dress for £9 that I'm delighted with as will take in two city breaks I've got coming up as it can be really dressed up. Pair of Solovair brogues for £30 like new.

With Vinted I think you have to check fabric and measurements if they're not provided (blessed be the sellers who include a photo of the label as you can often look the item up for full details) and grab it when you see what you want as the genuine bargains go really quickly!

Might be that you have lost your idea of what you like and need some inspiration trying things on and perhaps seeing, if near an eg John Lewis, you could get a stylist to help you find your mojo. I had totally lost mine last summer but now feel it's back and really enjoy putting different items together. I think I feel more confident too as very happy with how I feel in myself and with hair, skin, make up etc. HRT has helped with this!

TheOGCCL · 23/09/2023 12:46

Yeah it can be easy to get swamped in a lot of the clothes that are around. The change of season is a bit tricky too - where I am it's warm in the day and then cold from about 6pm.

I'm wearing slim/tapered jeans and trousers (skinnies just feel wrong though I will try them out again), slightly oversized shirts either worn open or tucked in, roll or high neck tops and cardigans of various descriptions. I think high/roll necks look more modern than v necks. I also have some fine/collared jumpers for when the weather turns worse.

I think you can buy quite plain things which don't necessarily make much of a statement (so I avoid pattern and wild colours) and jazz things up with accessories.

SirChenjins · 23/09/2023 12:51

54 and feeling a bit the same as you OP. I’m five foot one (and a bit - v important) so a lot of stuff drowns me. I go for shirt or fit and flare dresses, cropped trousers, skinny (I don’t gaf), boyfriend or straight legged jeans, and I’ve just gone back into my winter knee length skirts and boots. I get a lot of good brands on Vinted or from the chain shops, and like colour. I’m definitely not high fashion or edgy but I know what suits me.

CharlotteRumpling · 23/09/2023 12:52

I like quite plain non fussy non floral clothes. I am not good with Vinted but buy a lot from charity shops. I avoid large prints and Amishcore but do wear colour.

Wide leg jeans suit me as am tallish, but I tend not to tuck in my top. Lots of shirt/shift dresses and boots..Buying cord trousers and a dress shortly.

Today it's still warm in London so wearing an M and S linen shift dress and a denim jacket with trainers. Not very original but suits me and is comfy to walk about in.

MetaDaughter · 23/09/2023 12:52

But what's wrong with wide leg suit trousers, knitted long dresses and clumpy boots.? The latter two are quite prominent in my wardrobe - and I’m only not buying more wide legged trousers because my new knee high boots dictate focussing on skirts.

Am I alone in enjoying experimenting with (or revisiting) evolving fashion? I like seeing new versions of myself …

I have my eye on a tweed jacket. And after a week away from home I’m realising I have too many standout pieces (that don’t all work together) and not enough basics, so I may try to rectify that. But in general I’m really happy with what’s available to buy right now.

(Nb - am much older than 45.)

Moredarkchocolateplease · 23/09/2023 12:56

I'm 45 and I just bought some lovely wide leg frayed hem jeans from mango.

Planning to wear with a white Me & Em blouse that I got via ebay.

I generally wear mostly second hand COS or whistles or me and em from ebay and vinted.

At work I wear wide leg trousers from Marks, with vintage style pumas and a top/merino jmper.

I like a statement earring to liven this up. Chunky gold hoops and generally hair up.

EmmaPaella · 23/09/2023 12:57

Whatever I buy, I end up wearing jeans, a T shirt and a cardigan or jumper.

SirChenjins · 23/09/2023 12:58

But what's wrong with wide leg suit trousers, knitted long dresses and clumpy boots*

It depends on your size/shape and preferences.

Doggymummar · 23/09/2023 13:02

I've had a load of stuff from Uniqlo arrive today, pleated brown paisley skirt, brown under shirt with high neck, 3 pairs of cords 2 skinny one wide leg, prown cashmere sweater brown merino wool sweater, orange cashmere sweater, cashmere popover in cream bergundy thermal wool socks, and a teddy bear coat that arrives Tuesday. All from Vinted for about 150 quid that I got selling my summer clothes. It's going to a brown and orange autumn for me.

Floisme · 23/09/2023 13:03

From what you've said, you might not like a lot of what I like but anyway...

Wide leg trousers (which at 5'3 counts as a style crime on here but there you go)
Wide leg or straight leg jeans (current favourites are Jil Sander for Uniqlo)
Slightly oversized blazers (to be fair, I have narrow shoulders so most blazers are oversize)
Fitted vintage jackets (1940s-60s)
Tweed
Silk shirts
Velvet when I can find it (but cotton velvet, not polyester)
Men's sleeveless wool jumpers (tank tops back in the day but that seems to mean something else now)
Men's wool cardigans
Vintage brooches (50s or 60s preferred)
Vintage men's paisley scarves
Flat clumpy shoes / boots

This winter I'm planning to get back into skirts which I've not worn for a while. I want something top of the ankle length and tweedy but I'm a clothes hoarder so may have got something already

I don't buy much new stuff but my most recent new purchases were some Community Clothing trousers and an M&S trenchcoat with a hood.

I'm 67.

NatashaDancing · 23/09/2023 13:16

But what's wrong with wide leg suit trousers, knitted long dresses and clumpy boots.?

Quite a lot if you don't like them. I've no problem with knitted long dresses. I own one (it's ancient) I don't like trouser suits , wide legged or otherwise or clumpy footwear. They look ugly to me. They don't stop looking ugly just because someone has said they're in this season.

Although it's a massive exaggeration to say there's nothing else. Were that true I'd save money.

NatashaDancing · 23/09/2023 13:19

I was reading the thread backwards up. Got to this ^ and thought " I bet this is Floisme" 😊

YukoandHiro · 23/09/2023 13:19

I still wear skinnies and straight leg. I'm 5ft and look horrific and extremely small and dumpy in wide leg trousers. I don't think they look dated if you dress them with more up to date pieces - that's if they're the best suit for your body shape

YukoandHiro · 23/09/2023 13:21

EmmaPaella · 23/09/2023 12:57

That feels familiar

CharlotteRumpling · 23/09/2023 13:26

I love tweed and an Oxford brogue too
I dress in quite a masculine way. I can't do pretty or girly, or I feel odd. The past few years of flouncy dresses have driven me to charity shops.

There's a Dark Academia thread that I am.lurking on to get ideas as I suit that style.

checkedcloth · 23/09/2023 13:35

Nothing wrong with wide leg trousers. I just don’t want to wear them myself. I also don’t get the wearing a suit with a bumbag over your chest look.

I really love Sézane…so expensive though. I love some of their skirts but feel like I’d need loads of other stuff to make them work, ie boots.

The What are You Wearing Today (WAYWT) thread is good for ideas - a mix of styles and tastes.

Cantonet · 23/09/2023 13:37

59 & I'm wearing this pictured today.
The other pictures are a couple of new things I've bought over the last week.
I'm still debating over the M&S jeans.
I downloaded the Whering App several months ago & it's really helped me buy more sensibly & not so much. It's also helped me to refine what I like & more importantly what I wear day to day.
