Had another unsuccessful trip to the shops

I’m desperate for some new clothes, but just can’t find anything the suits me or I like.

The shops are filled with wide leg suit trousers, knitted long dresses and clumpy boots.

any bought anything good lately?

Today I wore soft girlfriend jeans from Joules, pale gold converse (years old, kids section) and a huge monogrammed white shirt (WNU) over a white vest. Usually I'm Cos and Jigsaw for work with a bit of M&S. I like shirts and slim trousers with big blazers or 'cos' cut dresses with boots for work. My Hush navy tulle skirt will come out this winter again, it's really versatile, and a jigsaw navy leather jacket and my DMs. I've just bought a long black satin skirt from wide legged black satin trousers and a black camisole from M&S all which will work with stuff I've already got. Having said that I'm really loving dark academia - so will look to invest in a few bits to make that look work for me this winter. I'm 61.

Today I wore a pair of grey Hiut Peggy jeans, from a short production run, that are fitted at waist and hip but loose through the leg. In April I wore them rolled up to ankle length, but this week I am wearing them full length with wedge heeled boots I have stored and ignored for 5/6 years. With a very plain grey knit top and a new black bag. It might sound daft, but I haven't owned or worn a black bag for 35 years, so to me it feels new again.

I love the colours in that sweater @Graciebobcat
Where's it from please?

SD1978 · 23/09/2023 21:31

I've decided I am wearing what I like, which for me is jeans, or trousers and a shirt- which inevitable has a pattern on it of foxes, pheasants or dogs. Maybe with a gilet if required, and I'm trying to fit back (down) into my Barbour jacket. Given I live in Melbourne now, do I stand out a tad- probably. Do I give any care? Nope. Wear what you love, because someone, somewhere will always tell you why you should or shouldn't but the joy of being an adult? I no longer have to care about the popular opinion because the people in my life love me for me!

I am over 70 but was a bit of a hippy, so usually I wear bright frilly flowery things. Mind you, if I could still fit into my 1970s hotpants I'd give them a go. The Metallica t-shirt I wore last week got a few comments.

I bought a great blue and white dressfromTesco a few weeks ago, and Jo Brown's summer stuff this year has been my taste, and I am seriously considering this https://www.dollyanddotty.co.uk/products/billie-long-sleeved-math-dress

So pleased to see your reply and know I'm not alone on being older and alternative, on here. I have posted about my style on page 3 which also includes Joe Browns.

I love their online shopping experience. I'm fortunate to live fairly near their store at Meadowhall and the outlet shop at York which isn't brilliant on my bank account though. LOL.

I have bought some pieces from Dotty & Dolly too before. I also love Hells Bunny which gives the punk edge I like too

KrazyboutKillian · 23/09/2023 23:38

@RosesAndHellebores
where did you get your black trousers from , they sound like what I’m looking for
ohh I know exactly the Mary janes you mean , they are on my list too

BitOutOfPractice · 23/09/2023 23:42

Today I’ve been helping my mom out so very relaxed. Red sweatshirt dress, silver trainers. Tomorrow it’ll be a black jersey wide leg jumpsuit with a chunky black and white cardigan and new balance trainers.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/09/2023 23:42

Oh sorry I’m 56.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 23/09/2023 23:58

Loved wearing Daughters of India dresses this summer as they are flattering and cover my menopause middle. Probably will go back to jumpsuits and converse this Autumn.

I noticed this too..🤣 I've been me here for over ten years but admit it threw me too.. was looking at the posts thinking I'm sure I didn't post that...

lookingforMolly · 24/09/2023 03:26

I'm 47. I work as an HCA so wear regulation tunic & (Next) navy trousers part of the week.

At present I'm overweight & not rich which does influence my outfit choices a bit!!
I've been living in black Primark Leggings, T-shirts & my black Adidas hoody plus 3 summer dresses from Next but summer is over.. and I've recently lost some weight!

Today I wore my Primark pale blue denim straight leg jeans (rolled up above the ankles to show off my white Adidas trainers as they're too long anyway) with a khaki camo scoop neck River Island tshirt I got for £5 from Vinted; and my pale pink 'bigger bust' denim jacket from Next.
I had my crossbody cream messenger bag from River Island.

Tomorrow I'll be wearing my yellow 40s style top from Monsoon (£10 from Vinted, originally £60!!) & slim leg dark blue denim Next jeans.
With black & pink New Balance trainers.

Sadly my mum has passed away suddenly.. I've had to plan & buy an outfit for her funeral in 2 weeks as I've got nothing smart enough.
She would want me to wear a dress.

So I've bought a single breasted black River Island blazer from Vinted for £20, which has a silver button I may replace with a gold button as I wear gold jewellery.
I'm going to buy a black long sleeved high neck tie waist mini dress also River Island £50, which is good for day or evening.
With 120 denier black opaques.
& either my Blowfish Malibu block heel Chelsea boots or black Simply Be knee boots. I also have a black RI crossbody bag.

I've also bought a black satin River Island wrap mini dress (with labels) off eBay for £8 (RI are currently selling it for £45!) to wear to an event.

I'm not keen on midi or maxi dresses unless they're fitted as I'm curvy and only 5'4'.
I bought a halterneck crinkle maxi dress in various pinks in the sale £45 from Monsoon recently.

My favourite shops for clothes, accessories & footwear are: River Island (no!),
Monsoon / Accessorize, Zara, Primark. New Look, Next, JD Sport, Office, Schuh, F&F at Tesco, Very & Asos.
As well as Vinted & ebay.

lookingforMolly · 24/09/2023 03:28

Omg didn't realise how long my post was. I've think grief is making me a bit manic. It's 330 and I'm wide awake.

MetaDaughter · 24/09/2023 06:15

My condolences, @lookingforMolly. I’m sure your mother would approve of your outfit. Flowers

Our styles and shopping habits couldn’t be more different, but I love the intentionality and specificity of your choices.

checkedcloth · 24/09/2023 06:21

I am so sorry for your loss @lookingforMolly. The outfit you have chooses sounds perfect, and that you’ll do your mum proud.

There are some posters that pop up on S&B who describe their style so well and sound so interesting I wish I could see their outfits in real life. @MonikerBing you're style sounds awesome.

Thank you! I do have lots of lovely clothes, but fall down at putting them together, and also buy too many of the same thing.

Today I've seen that The Kooples has lots of lovely stuff in the style which I'd like to be dressed in all the time. Sadly it's really pricy ((but Vinted might be my friend here...). I also really like Zadig & Voltaire which is even more expensive.

itsmeafterall · 24/09/2023 08:53

I've got a brilliant wide leg cotton jumpsuit from uniqlo.

Wear it with long or shirt sleeved top and cashmere cardi

Good with chunky boots or trainers.

Very versatile and flattering (allows for bloated tummy too ). The younger women at work always complement me on it 😊

blahblahblah1654 · 24/09/2023 08:55

I wear wrap dresses and converse or boots mostly. I don't think this baggy oversized look suits many people, unless you're young and slim. I'm 5 foot 1 and look like a dumpy little thing in the sack cloths they sell in shops at the moment.

SirChenjins · 24/09/2023 08:58

I agree @blahblahblah1654 - the oversized, baggy look is not kind to us shorties (it’s not a look I like anyway)

Chrispackhamspoodle · 24/09/2023 09:08

Image is not sensitive!I like Other Stories and H&M.I just did a work shop online at ASDA though.I was looking for a cord black pinafore dress and found all these bargains. The basic roll necks and boots are to go with the dresses. The embroidered blouse will be worn to work with black tailored Zara trousers and jeans at the w/end.20% off at the moment.

@MonikerBing thank you for the recommendation, I’ve ordered that book.

I very much like the brands you are describing, albeit yes they are expensive. Since the menopause I just don’t have the confidence in what fits me anymore - I just don’t think the Isobel Marant, Sézane stuff is right on my menopause belly
