Had another unsuccessful trip to the shops

I’m desperate for some new clothes, but just can’t find anything the suits me or I like.

The shops are filled with wide leg suit trousers, knitted long dresses and clumpy boots.

any bought anything good lately?

There are some posters that pop up on S&B who describe their style so well and sound so interesting I wish I could see their outfits in real life. @MonikerBing you're style sounds awesome.

Weekends: jeggings and a top, today a smocky, slightly ethnic old one from White Stuff with a navy coatigan and dark grey trainers.

Work tends to be dresses, quite plain from Toast, White Stuff, Seasalt (I know, I know) with a fitted cardi or the Whistles slimline Jersey jacket. Delivered today were some plain black wool/silk trousers, straight leg and neither wide nor skinny. They one of the best things I've bought for a long time. Wear for work with a wrap or scoop top and above mentioned Whistles jacket

In winter, knee length flat boot, a pair of character lace up boots with a little heel or chunky boots. Also partial to a loafer and have just bought Clarke's double strap Mary Jane with a block heel.

63 and dress for me/comfort. Best thing I ever did was having my colours done.

I'm in skinny jeans and a jumper, with a faux suede biker and some Tommy Hilfiger trainers when I went out earlier. It's my style and it suits me.

Was in M&S earlier and so much was shapeless and cheap looking and dull. The dresses looked like something from Little House on the Prarie, Jumpers that seemed really short. As for the Sienna Miller coat it was very boxy.

menopausalmare · 23/09/2023 16:17

Whatever fits. I'm 50 next month and seem to be slipping towards Cotton Traders and Pavers shoes. Comfort first, these days.

The trousers are Autograph, M&S, were £79 and worth every single penny.

Graciebobcat · 23/09/2023 16:22

Wide leg trousers, knitted long dresses and clumpy boots of course! 😁 Well, the last two when it gets colder.

When I'm not wearing those things, jeans, chinos, stripey tops, Converse.

Oliver Bonas & Sugarhill Brighton are usually my favourite clothes shops. With the odd items from M&S, TU, Mint Velvet, Whistles.

GreyBlackBay · 23/09/2023 16:27

I've always been one to just buy pieces I like then find that nothing goes with anything else. Also very little I like matches my lifestyle. I'm trying very hard to change.

This is very boring but here's what I'm doing.

I've found 3 looks that suit me and suit my lifestyle.
Equestrian type - skinny jeans /leggings, fitted longer length top or top with blazer, knee length boots
Slim cut trousers /jeans and slim hip length jumper (cashmere /merino), ankle boots
Straightish pleat front trousers, tucked in top, blazer, loafers

I've found a colour palette I like (3 neutral, 3 key piece colours, 3 accents).

I'm trying to make sure I have 2 or 3 of each item listed above that will mainly mix and match. So that all I need to do is decide what silhouette I'm going for today then choose from that subsection of clothes.

I know it sounds dull but my body shape (slim enough but exaggerated hourglass) doesn't suit fashion anyway.

I've managed to fill most of this from things I already own and at least I now know which pieces are missing in which colours, it's making shopping a lot easier! I'm not there yet but already feeling like I have something to wear.

59 & I'm wearing this pictured today.
The other pictures are a couple of new things I've bought over the last week.
I'm still debating over the M&S jeans.
I downloaded the Whering App several months ago & it's really helped me buy more sensibly & not so much. It's also helped me to refine what I like & more importantly what I wear day to day.

I like the look of those button fly jeans in the first pic - do you know where they’re from? Thanks 🙏🏼

Graciebobcat · 23/09/2023 16:38

Just bought this jumper - bit warm to wear it but it's very me. I'd wear it with grey straight cut jeans and silver Converse boots.

AYou said it op - wide legged trousers, long knitted dresse and clumpy boots is what I’m wearing, and loving it.

Cantonet · 23/09/2023 17:06

They're old M&S ones @RuppyDa.
From a couple of years ago. I bought about 4 new pairs on eBay recently as I love this style. It's similar to Free People styling I believe .

That’s pretty, where is it from? I had a similar vintage jumper like that but more pinks which I got rid of I think, blues are more me.

I might try a satin midi skirt. I do have a lovely lilac heather pleated skirt and crochet style cardigan from Next and a couple of Tu Sainsburys pleated skirts (floral and multi coloured striped). I’ve worn the floral one with a purple &other stories sort of polo neck jumper (got similar in black). I wear faux leather Chelsea/biker boots with them. I do have black leather laced up calf boots Matalan but due to plantar fasciitis I have to rethink footwear.

I got some Next knee high fringed black suede boots about a year ago so if anyone can think what to wear them with suggestions would be great! Got a stretch black knee/above knee M&S work type skirt that could work.

PinkTonic · 23/09/2023 17:13

I love wide leg trousers, if they fit through the hips and then A line I find them amazingly flattering. Just bought a fantastic pair in dark claret cord from Me&Em and a fab pair of jeans from M&S. Also have my fair share of knitted dresses, just got a long knitted skirt and matching cardigan from Cos, I like blouses and knitted tank tops and for going out I quite like a satin skirt with a chunky cashmere knit. I do want some non clumpy platform boots but can’t decide on colour. I’m 66 but starting a new job at the end of October and currently on a work clothes mission having almost exclusively wfh since the dreaded lurgy struck.

greengreengrass25 · 23/09/2023 17:19

I must admit I tend to wear stuff I already have and add to it. I probably will buy new footwear

I tend to wait for sales and offers like most of us

And that's great. I was a bit harsh on wide legged trousers (but I'll never be persuaded by clumpy boots).

I'm puzzled by OP saying there's nothing else, there's clearly heaps of other options.

RuppyDa · 23/09/2023 18:08

@Cantonet thanks so much - I’ll try getting on eBay or Vinted ❤️

That’s gorgeous. Where is it from? Asking for a friend…

Zipps · 23/09/2023 18:16

Not bought anything new for this autumn.
I don't like those wide leg suit trousers either trousers they're a bit too much like what my mum and auntie wear.
I'm wearing faux leather jeans and jumpers a lot
Also
Cigarette trousers
Jumper dresses
Shirt dresses
Mini skirt

All with opaque tights
I am a bit tempted by those long denim skirts but haven't tried any on yet.

Tbry · 23/09/2023 18:55

EmmaPaella · 23/09/2023 12:57

Whatever I buy, I end up wearing jeans, a T shirt and a cardigan or jumper.

Me too! That and in between leggings and a top. A while ago I just shoved on jeans, a black t shirt, hair loose and hoop earrings and instantly felt like me again, I told my partner that I should just wear this all the time and not bother with other clothes.

But I am still ‘experimenting’ with new things. Had a few lookiero boxes in the last couple of years some great some dreadful.

lindyloo57 · 23/09/2023 19:02

I love the long denim skirts that are around, tried one on in marks, but it looked terrible from behind as my bum is now flat.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/09/2023 19:03

I bought the M&S Autograph denim skirt. It's lovely, but I haven't tried it with boots yet.

keffie12 · 23/09/2023 19:07

I'm a bit my style type, and yes, I can wear it and look good. It's a mix of punk/boho.

My favourite outfit is leggings with my tartan calf length dress, which has black sleeves, a deep red leather jacket, and ankle boots, which lace up right up the side.

Hells bunny and Joe Brown's are my fave for mix and matching my way. No, I don't wear skimmy and pins, etc, now.

I do have a block of shock, warm pink in my hair, and tattoos, so I guess my style isn't really for everyone.

Charity ships are good for finding different things for layering

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/09/2023 20:16

I’m enjoying a loose, longer jean at the moment - Levi’s baggy dad, and 90s 501s. Looking forward to pulling out my oversized alpaca knits from Arket, and my DM Church boots, but for now I am still in trainers.

Today I wore blue Levi’s baggy dad jeans, a grey vintage sweatshirt with navy print from Depop, and navy/mustard Adidas Spezial trainers. Chunky gold link changing from Whistles and gold hoops from Oliver Bonas. New Whistles leather jacket which I love, love, love, and navy cross-body bag from Cos.

Ponderingtosk · 23/09/2023 20:23

Whitestuff dresses, not the current awful long things with a long flouncy hem but knee length, jersey stretch, very forgiving, I tend to only buy them in the sale or when there’s a big offer as they’ve got a tad expensive. I must have 15 of them with varying sleeve lengths, I love to pop one on, add a cardi, tights if chilly (shoes, boot or sandals all look great) and off I go.

don’t buy their shirts and t shirts as they are awfully thin and hole very quickly around the jeans button area. I find their stretch jeans fit great too.
