If you have big boobs what do you wear on top in winter?

I've been going through the curated closet book and am trying to get together a few looks in well coordinated colours so I've always got something to wear.

My mail order haul has arrived and I'm so disappointed. I've done well with colours, pretty much everything goes with everything else and flatters me.

I'm struggling with the fit of jumpers. I've big boobs but a decent waist and wanted a few that I could wear with straight jeans. They all make me look matronly! Hulking chest and no waist, just no shape at all.

I went for plain colours rather than patterns, wanting some thing more classic, but I'm wondering whether that was the right move.

So, if you're busty, what do you wear to avoid being all boob?

V neck cashmeres.

TheOGCCL · 14/09/2023 21:41

I generally don't wear jumpers. Definitely not anything thick or something like cable knit.

I normally wear a high neck top and then an open cardigan or blazer so that my bust is covered but there's no buttons straining over it.

Or when it's very cold I'd wear a fine knit jumper and a cardigan or similar over the top.

Layers are a big bust's friend.

V neck cashmeres.

Yes, this. Admittedly, I don't have much of a waist, but I'm militant about v-necks and I like soft, drapey fabrics. High neck, boat neck, round neck etc are all, categorically, a disaster for me.

yoshiblue · 14/09/2023 21:49

Uniqlo merino wool thin knit jumpers are perfect. Reasonable cost and quality too. I live in them in the winter at work with trousers and jeans

GettingStuffed · 14/09/2023 22:00

I have a few v necks from M&S but there doesn't seem to be much like it this year. I suggest you search for fitted sweater

Cinnamonandcoal · 15/09/2023 13:48

Uniqlo heattech in an XL, fine knit jumpers and cardigans over the top. Nothing bulky. Unless it's really freezing and then I don't care what I look like, only that I'm warm!

SeasonalWitch · 15/09/2023 13:56

I wear fake collars with round neck jumpers to draw the eye away from the boob but not add bulk.

I’ve got a short torso, so the usual v-neck doesn’t work for me as it reaches too low unless I can find a petite size.

I love shirts but if it fits everywhere else, the buttons pull at the boob when I move, so I iron a bit of hemming tape so it stays shut. It works as long as it’s a style I can pull on over my head.

EllaMenopee · 15/09/2023 16:51

Try on the v necks before you commit to any, they make me look like the prow of a ship. A boat or slashed neck is much better on me, although a lot harder to find. The exception is to open the top 2/3 buttons on a round neck cardigan.

ForthegracegoI · 15/09/2023 17:01

Layers, v-necks and drapey fabrics.

i never ever ever wear chunky knit wear or anything round / high necked. I don’t actually own any jumpers. Zip hoodies too, never pullover the head.

ForthegracegoI · 15/09/2023 17:06

Oh and nice big scarves for warmth! I’m in France and I love the fact everyone wears scarves exactly to a seasonal pattern 😂 no one, but no one would go out without a scarf in winter.

This! I have them in 7 different colours.

StoneTheCrone · 15/09/2023 21:21

V-necks.

I have some knitted v-neck vests in neutral colours and I wear an off-white shirt underneath, or a crew neck long sleeved knitted/jersey top.

I also wear higher neck jumpers (grown on neck is best) but always with a set-in or raglan sleeve to break up the bust, arms and shoulders.

I try to get a skimming fit thats flattering but not 'HERE ARE MY BREASTS!' 😄

StoneTheCrone · 15/09/2023 21:23

I find the Uniqlo merino jumpers too thin (see-through) and an unflattering poofy shape and the arms are tight, even on the large. Theyre not made for long armed people. They suit petites best.

TheFlis · 15/09/2023 23:13

@StoneTheCrone I’m 5”8 and they fit me perfectly.

FunnysInLaJardin · 15/09/2023 23:20

yep, V necks or a very wide boat neck. Anything else and I am one big block of top half

FunnysInLaJardin · 15/09/2023 23:22

and yes to cashmere, the most flattering fabric. Also happy with a zip up cashmere hoody for the weekend

Stressybetty · 15/09/2023 23:28

half or quarter zip hoodies or jumpers. Either woolly or sweatshirt material.

GreyBlackBay · 15/09/2023 23:35

Thank you all.

Spent the afternoon going through last year's clothes and wish I'd done this first. Plenty of cashmere that fits my criteria. The silhouette is exactly what I was aiming for, unfortunately the colours aren't what I wanted but I'm going to work with what I have.

On necklines, I find that very few v necks suit me. It works if its quite a deep v, of the nearly revealing variety. But anything shallower looks wierd. My favourite is a slightly scooped neck, Autograph did them last year and I have several colours. This does reduce the warmth though, I need to figure out scarves.

Also agree with the grown on neck type, I have a cashmere and a merino and both look good.

Still on the search for blazers, they all seem to have very wide shoulders.

I tend to wear fine knit fitted jumpers or drapey ones fitted at the waist for work with a wide leg trouser and chunky shoes. That seems to balance me out, the same jumpers with different shape of trousers or a skirt brings on the matronly effect. Looser fit at weekends, often tucked into high waist wide leg jeans at the moment. I can't do chunky knit, cable or ribbed jumpers.

CallieQ · 16/09/2023 00:43

A big bra

coxesorangepippin · 16/09/2023 01:19

I hate v necks personally

I wear a lot of boat necks and roll necks, but very loose and not that fitted

Black obviously hides them a bit too

Escalateandcreate · 16/09/2023 06:49

I need a deeper v jumper as like you, a short v just looks weird on me. I don’t wear black as it washes me out. I did get a decent hooded cardigan from marks and Spencer last year. It’s a zip up one and thst suits me with a vest top underneath.

PuppyMcPupFace · 16/09/2023 07:29

@ForthegracegoI me too, I have a theory they're taught how to tie them in French schools!
