If you have big boobs what do you wear on top in winter?

I've been going through the curated closet book and am trying to get together a few looks in well coordinated colours so I've always got something to wear.

My mail order haul has arrived and I'm so disappointed. I've done well with colours, pretty much everything goes with everything else and flatters me.

I'm struggling with the fit of jumpers. I've big boobs but a decent waist and wanted a few that I could wear with straight jeans. They all make me look matronly! Hulking chest and no waist, just no shape at all.

I went for plain colours rather than patterns, wanting some thing more classic, but I'm wondering whether that was the right move.

So, if you're busty, what do you wear to avoid being all boob?

I’ve got big boobs but I’m not a slender person so I don’t particularly look out of proportion. My favourite sweater is a very old slash neck which is very fitted on the waist ( too small for me currently but getting there).
I have V necks because I was a slave to “the rules” but find them less stylish than high necks. I’ve had success with men’s high neck cashmere sweaters that I’ve found in charity shops… a bit of slouch looks good.
I’ve just bought a chocolate brown merino wool from Cos to wear under blazers - it has thumb holes. I don’t know why I’m so delighted with that feature. My black wool top from Cos also has very long sleeves so whoever was struggling with sleeve length might want to look there.

I generally don't wear jumpers. Definitely not anything thick or something like cable knit.

I normally wear a high neck top and then an open cardigan or blazer so that my bust is covered but there's no buttons straining over it.

Or when it's very cold I'd wear a fine knit jumper and a cardigan or similar over the top.

Layers are a big bust's friend.

How do you stop the top layer splaying to the side of your boobs? I've never been able to wear open blazers or cardigans because they just won't sit 'on top' they way they do for those with smaller busts

V-neck.

I can get away with a round neck if I'm wearing a good bra, but for those days when I don't want loads of wires then it needs to be a v-neck for me.

I also looks for jumpers that do cinch in towards the waist rather than being boxy.

Shirts with a tank top/waist coat

TheOGCCL · 16/09/2023 09:36

@LittleRedY0shi Hmmm I’ve never really noticed that issue. I often use crew cut cashmere cardigans. Not exactly cutting edge but classic (and cardigans are back in this season). Maybe your top layer is too big, or too small. Even if it splays though, you still get that illusion of length as you have two parallel lines. As with stomachs, other people don’t see your bust from above only. Scarves are good for plugging any gap.

I also agree on the Uniqlo merino jumpers, I got one for the first time recently, after previously deciding Uniqlo did not cut for large busts, and it’s great.

geoger · 16/09/2023 09:40

I like slash neck, scoop neck or square neck - V necks never suit me and polo necks look ridiculous
I tried long jumpers that are baggy but again I looked pregnant with skinny legs
try Next or M&S

I find the Uniqlo merino jumpers too thin (see-through) and an unflattering poofy shape and the arms are tight, even on the large. Theyre not made for long armed people. They suit petites best.

Same here. Also the round neck was too high, although I also should avoid round necks.

Mirabai · 16/09/2023 09:47

Not sure if E cup counts as big but I wear fitted cashmere cardigans (generally sale purchases), skinny rib polos and lots of jumper dresses.

Mirabai · 16/09/2023 09:48

I have found that lose tops + big boobs does not work, particularly if you’re petite.

You sound a very similar shape to myself. Crazy as it sounds look at Men's V Neck jumpers. I find they generally fit better around the bust and shoulders. Marks and Spencer do Merino wool ones every year. You may be a bit more limited on colours but they do seem to be upping their game lately.

Greentrilby · 16/09/2023 10:11

I feel your pain! I’ve just bought a couple of wrap tops from Next and they are good but for going out in the evening rather than keeping warm.

i like the idea of fake collars - anyone know where do you get these from?
I usually wear a tight ish t shirt with a v neck cardigan over but it does look matronly and I need to get out of my rut

I've bought half a dozen men's cashmere v necks from Vinted over the last week or so, my partner has pinched two but they are much better quality than women's.

You might be right about wearing tops that are too small. It's rare that I find a cardigan or blazer that's a good fit in all ways, so I tend to choose ones that are a good fit for my arms, which is then too small on the bust.

Try on the v necks before you commit to any, they make me look like the prow of a ship. A boat or slashed neck is much better on me, although a lot harder to find. The exception is to open the top 2/3 buttons on a round neck cardigan.

See, I'd LOVE to look like the prow of a ship.

Off to look for V necks.

This might be the most useful thread I have ever read on MN. I would never have considered those Phase 8 jumpers, but I can see they would work. I love the All Saints wrap top. I have been thinking about a waisted cardigan from Cos. I wear fitted scoop neck/ v neck T-shirts with a cardigan. Weirdly, having avoided cropped or boxy shapes , I find they look ok in a cardigan if left open, tragic as a jumper. Vneck jumpers are good if drapey and fine, but not with anything underneath. I wore baggy tops for years, now I try to buy things that are slightly more fitted.

Zebracat · 16/09/2023 12:12

Cardigan

Zebracat · 16/09/2023 12:13

Cardigan!

Escalateandcreate · 16/09/2023 12:14

I love the Becca batwing jumpers from Phase Eight but I don’t like the 3/4 sleeve length. I want one with long sleeves.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 16/09/2023 12:24

Mint velvet normally have nice ones but I can’t see any this season. Maybe Vinted

jannier · 16/09/2023 12:39

Thin neck v necks, layer tops with jackets, long line cardigan, add scarfs or necklace to add a v, add tie waisted tops

CoffeeCantata · 16/09/2023 12:52

Agree with V-neck jumpers and dresses, and I also have some cowl neck cashmeres which fall into a flattering V and sort of distract attention from my bust. Scarves can work and cover/distract attention too.

Never ever wear crew necks or tight round necks - you need something with a lower neck to flatter. I sometimes see large-busted women in a high neck and I think it looks awful - the distance from their neck to their bust looks enormous.

I think loose is more flattering than tight - but loose, not baggy - it's hard to define but easy to recognise! And for my money -NEVER show cleavage. I just think, the minute you show cleavage, you cheapen any outfit and draw attention to just the feature(s) you're trying to disguise, so if a V neck jumper is too low I have a load of fine/thin vest tops to cover my cleavage.

One last hint I've discovered the hard way - don't wear small (hate the word ditsy, but that's what I mean) prints if you are larger or have a large bust. Go for strong, big , bold geometric (or florals if they're big and more sophisticated than ditsy) prints instead.
