Small fashion annoyances?

Britpopbaby · 05/09/2023 18:27

It goes without saying inconsistent sizing which I would consider a big annoyance however I am thinking of zips, buttons and things like that.

I will start with elastic button holes! One breaks and you either have to stitch it back on or safety pin it.

I hate those little straps fixed to the sleeves meant to be rolled and buttoned up. Why??
( they also make sleeves into 3/4 or elbow lengths, another Why??)

goingtotown · 06/09/2023 21:54

Tight polo neck jumpers are so uncomfortable cowl necks are more flattering.

selectandfind · 06/09/2023 22:00

I'm not sure you can still buy them but women still wear them - cold shoulder tops.

alannabanana81 · 06/09/2023 22:02

Labels! All of them. Ones that seem OK then go on to drive you crazy as the day wears on. Especially huge multi labels that are almost like a little book of labels digging into your waist. I know you can get label removers but I've made so many holes ripping off itchy labels.

newrubylane · 06/09/2023 22:15

Round necks that are cut too big and gape - I'm a size six, being smaller also extends to my neck!

T-shirt sleeves that stick up at the ends a bit.

Long sleeve t-shirts/blouses that are cut too short on the arms so you look like you've outgrown them.

The flappy bit on trousers that's meant to cover the zip but it doesn't quite.

Breast pockets.

When jeans/trousers come with a belt but it's way too big for the waist of the trousers and needs more holes poking in it (looking at you Zara)

Earrings with those stupid big round plastic backs. I think you're meant to snap them off but I never can?

Pigtailsandall · 06/09/2023 22:20

Little bows on every single pair of pants. Like, I just want some decent underwear, either plain or a bit sexy, and a little-girl bow on my pants is just unnecessary and off-putting. I'm not five.

Chickydoo · 06/09/2023 22:24

Elasticated waists on trousers.
I am fairly tall and slim, however they make me look like a sack of potatoes

Completely agree with this. Since Covid they are all I can find and they are so unflattering.

My other bugbear is V-neck tops/dresses that are way too low. So many times I've found a perfect item for work that is ruined by my boobs spilling out of it....and I'm not particularly busty. I could use a modesty panel of course but I refuse to.

ElizaWinter · 06/09/2023 22:31

Britpopbaby · 06/09/2023 21:22

@NameChangeEmbarressed River Island I think is guilty of this. You see something you like only to find it has embellishments that just make the item too ‘extra’ and so they lose a sale.

Yes River Island love to brand everything in plastic gold lettering or add embellishments which look tacky.

Crucible · 06/09/2023 22:43

Daft cutesy messages on pyjamas. Also don't like hooded robes, you get them in posh hotels and spas, I just feel like the killer from the Dan Brown books. Daft.

Frangipaneloathing22 · 06/09/2023 13:21

Me too! I have a large bust and tum. I don’t want pockets on anything thank you very much bc they just serve to emphasise my problem areas.

Another person who loathes pockets. I never use them and I don't want to purchase any skirts, dresses or trousers (except jeans) with them.

RampantIvy · 06/09/2023 22:53

It seems like I am the only one who likes breast pockets. Unlike the vast majority of mumsnet I am not big of boob Sad

I also hate those tags on shirts for rolled up sleeves.

BenoitsBriocheFeuilletee · 06/09/2023 23:03

People having trouble fastening tiny loops over buttons - if you have one handy, use a crochet hook to take the loop over the button. If you don’t, buy one. They don’t cost much and make the task much easier.

I agree that’s not much help with buttons at the back of your neck, eg in my favourite FatFace Simone dresses. In that case I just don’t undo the buttons.

Dies this advice go for men too?

Yes, men look equally awful with stuff rammed in their pockets and well dressed men don’t do it.

Crispynoodle · 06/09/2023 23:15

LiveLaughLoaf · 06/09/2023 18:30

The annoying fabric loops make the best ornament hangers for the Christmas tree! I save all mine.

Very good for pretending you’re the ghost of a Benedictine monk and haunting your husband along the cloister hallway though.

Just me?

I've never tried haunting anybody in one (although now I ask myself why not), but I love a hooded dressing gown.

MagicClawHasNoChildren · 07/09/2023 10:58

Women's clothes that don't accommodate boobs. I just bought a dress a size up in the hope that it would fit over my chest. All I've achieved is gaping armholes (it's sleeveless) and buttons pulling over the middle. It's too big and too small simultaneously.

Also, I'm not particularly tall or long-limbed, but I always have to buy 3/4 length sleeves because full length ones are never actually long enough to reach my wrists!

Britpopbaby · 07/09/2023 12:49

Bags with dark inner linings! It’s easier to see the contents of your bag with a lighter coloured lining.

Cotton tops with polyester thread stitching ( tumble drying)

Also, navy and white striped tops/t shirts
I own absolutely bloody loads of these and never know if they're lights or darks? I bung them in with whites and 2 colour catchers and hope for the best!

anon2022anon · 07/09/2023 14:56

Jumpsuits (which I love) that look perfect until you realise the only way to get in or out of it is a zip that goes right up your back to the middle of your neck. I can't contort that far, I wee a lot, so it's not getting bought unless I fancy wetting myself.

pepperaunt · 07/09/2023 15:10

I love jumpsuits, and find that there is always a kind soul in the ladies who will help you with unzipping/zipping, then commiserate with you on how annoying yet comfortable they are😆

pepperaunt · 07/09/2023 15:11

I also agree with almost everyone else about (highly unflattering) pockets on shirts!

user1477391263 · 07/09/2023 15:11

I hate pockets and have been known to sew them closed. They ruin the line of a lot of garments.

Frangipaneloathing22 · 08/09/2023 05:13

KirstenBlest · 06/09/2023 13:55

@Frangipaneloathing22 , not all of them expand that much. I wear a belt with jeans.
I can remember nipping into town once in a new pair of jeans, and by the time I headed to the last stop, the supermarket, the jeans were sliding down my hips. making walking difficult. That was the last time I wore them.

Yes, to be fair, it tends to be the cheaper brands that do this. And I agree, a belt is essential, just in case!

KirstenBlest · 08/09/2023 12:10

@Frangipaneloathing22 , I find that most brands will slip a little if they have any elastane in them, but those ones seemed to have grown a couple of sizes in about 2 hours. Maybe they were a duff pair - the brand name starts with U.

I find M&S slip a little, but fine with a belt. FatFace were great but I'd still wear a belt.
