Small fashion annoyances?

Britpopbaby · 05/09/2023 18:27

It goes without saying inconsistent sizing which I would consider a big annoyance however I am thinking of zips, buttons and things like that.

I will start with elastic button holes! One breaks and you either have to stitch it back on or safety pin it.

I'll go with exposed zips that would be quite at home on a tent but instead are sewn into what looks like a stunning evening dress (from the front).
From the back, not so stunning.

RavingStone · 06/09/2023 14:23

Leg lengths are at least hemmable. I wish they'd offer a variety of rises. High waisted styles are often still nowhere near my actual waist.

Also dungarees with top halves that aren't long enough so the bib bit sits on or below one's nipples. Nice.

Worst of all is unflattering trouser back pocket placement.

KirstenBlest · 06/09/2023 14:27

Exposed zips ruin the look of clothes and bags.

Trouser legs can be hemmed but they tend to be quite short anyway.

Lottapianos · 06/09/2023 12:28

Well, this is a massive one actually.. women come in different heights and that means we have a range of leg lengths. So why in the name of SANITY do 99% of women's trousers come in a range of waist sizes but only ONE leg length??? WHY???

This!! I have a 34 inch inside leg. Jeans are generally ok if you go for brands that offer proper sizing but normal trousers? Forget it. Tall rages are often weirdly proportioned for me too because I'm not actually that tall, I just have long legs.

Obviously it's cheaper not to offer different lengths, but it's funny how this doesn't seem to be a problem for people making men's clothes?

Lottapianos · 06/09/2023 14:37

'Obviously it's cheaper not to offer different lengths, but it's funny how this doesn't seem to be a problem for people making men's clothes?'

Well exactly. And hemming is all very well, but it's not much use if you're 5'8 and all trousers seem to be made for women of 5'5

M&S is the only brand I can think of that does trousers in short, regular and long, and even their 'long' isn't quite long enough for me at 5'8

Wanttobekind · 06/09/2023 14:43

@lottapianos - fatface, seasalt and white stuff all do short regular and long trousers as well as jeans, though they may not be your cup of tea! I invariably need short.

My bugbear is twiddles. Bows, flounces, frills, diamanté, random shite stuck on when all I really want is nice plain basics.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 06/09/2023 14:47

KirstenBlest · 06/09/2023 11:58

No pockets isn't an annoyance because I'll just not buy it. Same goes for cropped trousers and ankle grazers, 3/4 sleeves and elbow length sleeves.

Yep, I hate chopped-off sleeves or legs.
They seem to make it look as if you're wearing something that shrank in the wash and to cut off at the most unflattering point.
I have never worked out how you're supposed to get a jumper, jacket or coat on over 3/4 sleeves.
When I'm world dictator [a call I expect any day now!] they will be banned.

Lottapianos · 06/09/2023 14:48

'@lottapianos- fatface, seasalt and white stuff all do short regular and long trousers as well as jeans, though they may not be your cup of tea! I invariably need short.'

Good shout, thanks 👍

hdbs17 · 06/09/2023 14:55

@VeronicaBeccabunga see I love 3/4 length sleeves as I hate the feeling of cuffs sliding around my wrists so I tend to always opt for 3/4 if I can - because it's too annoying to pull my sleeves up all the time!

Amazongirl9 · 06/09/2023 14:59

Couldn’t agree more!

That many shirts don't seem to be tailored for having a waist and larger bust, unless you buy the ones that are always bought by women who are 70+ and shop solely at M&S. And they're always too short too.

Why can't there by nice fashionable shirts that have an extra pleating for a larger bust so the buttons aren't gaping, but also come in at the waist so I don't look boxy? But that also come down to my hips so they don't get stuck over my wide hips when I raise my arms!

Just this for me, though I do agree those fiddly little buttons with elastic loop fastenings are incredibly hard at the back of the neck if you're alone trying to fasten one.

KirstenBlest · 06/09/2023 15:25

The trouser length is a good one actually. I'm average height (5'4" ish) and don't have particularly long legs, yet I rarely need to hem jeans or trousers, although did when high heels were fashionable.

Proper jeans brands and M&S usually have lots of different leg lengths.

Not an issue for me, but many shoes come in only standard sizes. I picked a shoe retailer at random, and the first sandal listed is available in sizes 4 - 8. Many don't do half-sizes.

bluegreenandcoral · 06/09/2023 11:33

I think I’ll be on my own on this one but I don’t get the obsession with pockets. They’re clearly popular so lots of skirts and dresses now get designed with pockets but I think having pockets ruins the line and most things look better without!

I so agree! I've been known to remove pockets when possible but it is such a hassle! I was always taught NEVER to put anything in pockets because it will ruin the clothes. And looks a mess

jallopeno · 06/09/2023 16:20

Breast pockets. Why

RampantIvy · 06/09/2023 16:41

I'm not well endowed so I like breast pockets.
Stretchy jeans that slip down.
Three quarter length sleeves. I have long arms. If it is warm I want sleeveless or short sleeves. If it is cold I want long sleeves.
Fake pockets - why?
Inconsistent sizing. I'm looking at you M and S, where the same item in two different colours can be slightly different in sizing.

Cheerfulcharlie · 06/09/2023 16:50

Why doesn’t someone have a clothing brand that is particularly aimed at one body shape eg Apple shapes, then all you’d have to do is know your body shape and hopefully all of their clothes would have a much better chance of being flattering than having to guess.
Or why don’t fashion brands have their collections split into ‘flattering for Apple shapes’ ‘flattering for tall slim’ etc ?

fiorentina · 06/09/2023 16:55

Shirts that are designed to be tucked in but are too short. Why?!

Because sadly busts aren't fashionable 😔 anything remotely fashionable is cut to look somewhat like it looked on the model. Big chests make everything look frumpy or sexy. Clothes that cater for big breast simply by doing so, stop looking cool and turn into grumpy or sexy. I can't bear it either

NothankyouNigel · 06/09/2023 17:23

Those useless loops on tops intended I think, to wrap round the hanger. First thing I have to do is cut them off as they invariably end up peeking out the neck or armhole. Does anyone actually use them?

PackBacker · 06/09/2023 17:30

All linen clothes, they just seem to grow and grow, I always seem to buy the wrong size.
Wrap dresses, I’ve now banned myself from buying them as i gave to stitch or pin them.

MarkWithaC · 06/09/2023 17:39

Clothes sizing seems to assume that people get bigger all over as they get taller. I'm 5' 10" and a size 8 and always have to choose between jumpers that are long enough in the sleeves but two sizes too big on the bust and torso, or nicely fitted but sleeves halfway up to my elbows.
Same with trousers and choosing between them fitting at the waist or being long enough in the leg.

LiveLaughLoaf · 06/09/2023 18:30

The annoying fabric loops make the best ornament hangers for the Christmas tree! I save all mine.

Echobelly · 06/09/2023 18:35

Maxi dresses that seem designed to trail along the floor on someone 6ft tall - I've had to get them shortened by 6 inches or so sometimes!

Not enough bras with small back sizes - not a problem any more with middle aged spread, but it was really hard to find 30 backs especially when I was a C cup during/after breastfeeding, as they only seemed to do 30s in A or B cup.

PrinceHaz · 06/09/2023 18:38

I started a thread about mine- ruched shoulders on tops and dresses. They’re meant to be a nice bit of detail but they just make my shoulders look ridiculous. They’re everywhere.

Doyoureallyhavetoask · 06/09/2023 18:52

Anything that makes my shoulders look broader, like frills or padded shoulders. I already have broad shoulders and don't want to look like an American footballer, thanks.

Also - clothes with bits cut out of them. I live in a cold part of the UK!
