How much would you pay for a lipstick?

My favorite lipstick has gone up from to £26.00. I love it and cheaper ones don't compare but I feel it's now going up too much, even though it does last ages and I ony use that one. I would feel extravagant buying it now or am I being silly? I know you get what you pay for but I have premium brand foundation too.

If it were a marketing question - then in my case , nothing. I get by on the Clinique freebies when I buy skincare products.

I've no moral objections to anyone buying expensive lipstick. It's just not something I spend money on.

DrJump · 04/09/2023 22:23

If it's the one you love buy it. Every now and then I try a cheaper brand and it's almost always a disappointment.

continentallentil · 04/09/2023 22:23

If you love it and it lasts and you can afford it it’s money well spent

I once spent 45 quid on a Marc Jacobs lipstick by accident (long queue / in a hurry / needed a quick glam up) - I was HORRIFIED - but my god it lasts without drying my lips out.

MaybeanothertimeNotReally · 04/09/2023 22:24

The most I've spent on a lipstick is £20 and £35 for a Charlotte Tilbury foundation. They both lasted ages though so worth the money per wear.

DanceMumTaxi · 04/09/2023 22:27

My absolute max would be £40 for something I really loved. I’d be happier around the £30 mark though. I’d get your lipstick if you know you’re going to use it. You’d only end up disappointed if you got a cheaper one and would probably end up buying the expensive one too.

GolgafrinchamB · 04/09/2023 22:29

I wouldn't have thought I'd do this, but I paid £25 for a Charlotte Tilbury and it was absolutely worth it. I only need that one lipstick and it has lasted at least two years.

So as prices go up, I'd pay up to £30

@pussinboots61 it wasn't for you. It was @jallopeno saying she's willing to pay £30 for a lipstick. Yet she's on another active thread moaning about people going on a holiday!

Sorry I thought it was for me

@pussinboots61 it's this new feature when I click reply under a post it doesn't do it like before. No it wasn't for you 😀

hdbs17 · 05/09/2023 10:07

I think £30 is my maximum but it's got to have good reviews and lasting power for me to pay it.

My new regular is £18 which I think is reasonable (Iconic melting tinted lip balm - highly tinted!)

Mycatisthebestever · 05/09/2023 10:11

Think of it like clothes - cost per wear/use. For me probably 30.

Cantonet · 05/09/2023 10:19

I save up my Boots points & use them to buy Mac lipstick when it's on sale. £30 seems reasonable for a good quality lipstick. The only problem is by the time you've factored in Primer & lip pencil it all adds up to a lot more than £30.

ShadyPaws · 05/09/2023 10:30

Gently you've been asking the same question since 2014
Buy it or don't but maybe look at why you obsess over Clinique vs no 7

Middleagedmeangirls · 05/09/2023 10:36

£32 is my top point so far - for Tom Ford from an outlet store. I've also had some custom made at a similar price point. I love lipstick.

clowniform · 05/09/2023 11:33

£30? I wear lipstick every day but no other makeup.

Barbiesback · 05/09/2023 11:37

@Cantonet I personally never use a lip pencil with a good quality lipstick.

Zhougzhoug · 05/09/2023 12:23

I remember when MAC lipsticks were a tenner and that was a splurge and you could take 6 empties back and get a free one AND it was all fields rounds here.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 05/09/2023 12:29

My first Clinique lipstick was £8.50, which wasn’t a huge amount more than the ones I’d been buying from Boots’ natural collection at around £3.50. That’s why I started to buy from the counters - I wasn’t making mistakes and buying lipsticks that really didn’t suit me because I hadn’t properly tested them. There’s a huge price difference now - boots natural collection are less than £3 and Clinique are £22-24.

Choux · 05/09/2023 12:30

Do you use a lip brush to let you use all of the lipstick? About the bottom 1/4 to 1/3 of the product is within the case so you can't get to it without a lip brush.

Anyone not doing that on a £26 lipstick is throwing £6-9 in the bin every time they 'finish' a lipstick.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 05/09/2023 12:31

I always use a lip brush to get to the bottom. I think there should be some kind of separate push up mechanism to release the bottom of a lipstick when you’re down to the nub to prevent waste.

Can I ask what you mean by this?

@pussinboots61 you've been asking the same questions about pricing, Clinique, no7 since 2014
I'm not posting the rest but you obviously know what you've posted
I'm just suggesting either spend the money or don't but you've posted before about help with your beauty obsession and it might make you happier to get away from it

Lipstick - is it worth splurging on? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/styleandd_beauty/2318778-Lipstick-is-it-worth-splurging-on

Time40 · 04/09/2023 21:32

About £5, to be honest!

Same here, rimmel 5.99 is about my limit I think.

But I'm not a big lipstick wearer, I prefer benetint which also costs a fucking fortune imo.

MadisonAvenue · 05/09/2023 22:14

I buy Mac lipsticks, mainly because they have a better range of colours which suit me. I’m warm toned and find that most cheaper lipsticks are cool toned which look awful on me but Mac have a good variety of warm shades so for me they’re worth spending that bit extra.

Gnomegnomegnome · 05/09/2023 22:17

I pay £37 and it’s worth every penny.

Nat6999 · 05/09/2023 22:27

I used Clinique Dramatically different lipstick at £22 & almost lipstick at £24, they last for years.
