Can I winterise this dress for a wedding evening do?

This dress has done sterling work for me this summer - it's been out to a couple of restaurants for friend's 50th, and with DH. Garden opera event. A wedding.

Whistles Dress

I'm going to a wedding evening do at the end of October. Can I "winterise" it at all? Not sure it cuts the mustard for winter, but I'm curious of any ideas.

Wedding reception is in a country house hotel. Service beforehand will be in the bride's home village church.

I don’t think it’s a particularly summary dress so I don’t see you’d have to do much to make it suitable, just closed toe shoes instead of sandals. I imagine your other accessories would be fine too as the colours are quite dark anyway.

timetolive · 21/08/2023 21:31

The colours are already winter so I don't think you really need to do anything to winterise it. Just pp, closed toe shoe rather than sandals

OleMioSole · 21/08/2023 21:34

Doesn't look particularly seasonal to me. If you're worried about the cold pop on a nice jacket but it looks fine as it is.

Btw I don't get what people mean by 'summer' and 'winter' colours. Surely a pop of bright colour brightens up a dreary winter day?

I know what colours suit me and as my skin stays the same regardless of season those are the only ones that i'll wear!

FoxyFeeling · 21/08/2023 22:25

That’s really boring, a middle aged work dress!

That wasn't the op's question but I'm sure she appreciates your feedback 🙄

foolishone · 21/08/2023 22:48

I don't think it's really a wedding outfit at all, sorry. Unless the wedding is very low key/casual.

annlee3817 · 21/08/2023 22:50

It's got a very 1940's feel to it, so some nice close toe shoes and a faux fur stole maybe?

Iknowthis1 · 21/08/2023 23:32

I think you can definitely wear it casually in the Winter with boots but I'm struggling to think how you can make it work for a winter wedding.

greyhairnomore · 21/08/2023 23:57

Not sure it's very weddingy.

cocksstrideintheevening · 22/08/2023 00:38

I don't think you need to winterise it, in October. Looks like a work dress.

NatashaDancing · 22/08/2023 00:43

It's going to look even more of a work dress, and quite a casual work dress at that, with that on top.

Obviously it's a perfectly decent and respectable dress and wouldn't cause any faux pas at a wedding but equally you could pop out to do the grocery shopping in that outfit and nobody would notice.

SM4713 · 22/08/2023 00:48

I agree with others that it doesn't scream summery to start with! How casual is the wedding, because it doesn't look formal enough for a wedding IMO. To 'winterise' I'd add tights, boots and a jacket, but personally wouldn't wear that to a wedding- unless its was a registry office and pub type wedding.

NatashaDancing · 22/08/2023 01:01

Boots will make it more of a work/ every day dress. It doesn't need "winterising" as it's not summery to start with.

If I were trying to dress it up I'd wear sheer black tights and black patent shoes or sheer tights and patent shoes picking a colour from the dress. And a necklace of the sort of OTT good quality modern costume jewellery you get in art gallery shops like the V&A or The Royal Academy.

brilliant!!

Neverseenbefore · 22/08/2023 08:50

I don’t think that’s very wedding suitable, especially for an evening do. It’s an everyday sort of dress. But you can wear it if you want. Closed shoes. Jewellery.

TheWitchCirce · 22/08/2023 09:05

It is already an Autumnal dress, I'm more curious about how you made it summary.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/08/2023 09:08

Yes I think it’s already very autumnal. I have no idea how you worked that for a summer wedding or garden opera.

MuddlerInLaw · 22/08/2023 09:30

It’s a day dress, @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads. The entire jewellery stock of all the royal palaces couldn’t make it evening wear. Combination of shape, print, non-luxury fabric - it’s perfectly nice but there’s not a single thing about it that indicates celebration.

No one’s going to turn you away at the door - but if you can find or afford something else …

FancyFanny · 22/08/2023 09:41

You wore that to a summer wedding?

Poppins2016 · 22/08/2023 09:44

I wouldn't say October is winter - it's autumn! The dress is very autumnal in colour, so it'll work fine.

It's badly styled on the website. The customer photos at the bottom of the webpage show it off much better. I agree it doesn't scream wedding, but it's much nicer in the flesh than Whistles make it look.

I would autumn-ise it with a black polo neck underneath and black suede knee-high boots. Long coat, definitely not a jacket.

That would be gorgeous!

FancyFanny · 22/08/2023 09:41

You wore that to a summer wedding?

Yes, last week, with red sandals. I don't think I looked out of place. My mother would have certainly told me if I had.

It's summery-ness is that it is very light fabric.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll look for something different, but I am definitely not a Hobbs/LK Bennet girl, and am further hampered by footwear choices for size 9 feet.

Possibly it is a boring work dress. I don't work in an office. It would be very unboring, albeit massively inappropriate, in a site cabin!
