Can I winterise this dress for a wedding evening do?

This dress has done sterling work for me this summer - it's been out to a couple of restaurants for friend's 50th, and with DH. Garden opera event. A wedding.

Whistles Dress

I'm going to a wedding evening do at the end of October. Can I "winterise" it at all? Not sure it cuts the mustard for winter, but I'm curious of any ideas.

Wedding reception is in a country house hotel. Service beforehand will be in the bride's home village church.

Which dress do you mean, @Hesma? (The conversation has moved on from the start of the thread.)

To me it doesn’t look like a dress for a wedding but that just may be the slouchy model and Birkenstocks 🤣. Smart shies, bag and accessories and it would probably look much better

You mean the Whistles dress?

I'm not sure about this whole 1940s thing - surely a very full skirt is the opposite of 1940s austerity dressing? Even the non-pencil skirts then, were bias cut and not that full. I'm just thinking of photos of my grandparents wedding, and my grandmother as a young woman.

Anyway, moving on... I rather like this in the indigo blue. Still not sure what I'd do with my heffalump feet.

I prefer the berry for Autumn.

MrsFiddle · 22/08/2023 16:52

Oh and please let me never hear the word "coatigan" ever again 😂

GarlicGrace · 22/08/2023 17:03

I'm not opposed to your original dress, but agree the sating Ghost dress is WAY more 'occasion'. I know lots of MNers have opted for similar styles this year - how does it look with big boobs?

Unless the couple are very lucky with the weather, it's going to be bloody freezing in church and the hotel might be a bit parky as well. Therefore, I like the boots & fur ideas. Could look incredibly opulent with the satin dress 🙂

I don't actually know this brand, this is the first time I have seen any of their models. But I went into the site now, and the other models are standing quite strangely as well.

But as I was scrolling through, all I could think was I am sure some of these items are beautiful, but they just are not advertising them to show them off well. The sullen look. It didn't make me happy to look at them.

Which made me think of this clip. Its a few years old now. I know I would take notice these dresses way more due presentation alone.

I much prefer Reay and Batsheva's styling to the awful pouting selfies brands like Roman use. However in the case of that particular Reay model I think it is a disability.

It's not a 1940s style.

Tickletuesday · 22/08/2023 17:14

I like it. A nice pair of black heels, nude tights, hair and make up it will look great. Maybe a clutch bag.

Have we not seen enough inanely grinning models?

I imagine Matches does pretty well with their current client base. Clearly people who actually buy Raey like the way the brand (Matches house brand) is portrayed. (I do!)

I like the way that Reay, Matches, Batsheva, Erdem, Envoy of Belfast style and the like style their dresses. Erdem's favourite thing is pairing massively huge, clompy black leather brogues with its delicate dresses.

I absolutely hate the pouty, glammed up selfies styling or videos with swanning about and swishing hair.

I think it's because Reay etc are promoting their beautiful/ wildly original/ eccentric/ totally impractical / mad to the point of looking like an escapee from a Victorian lunatic asylum (delete as appropriate according to taste) dresses rather than "does this flatter me"

Generous fur stole - good reviews, though it looks as if you'll have to move the fastener and maybe use some double-sided tape. £36.

@NatashaDancing I agree. a PP said it had 1940s vibes, which started the whole fur stole thing.

I think it’s absolutely fine for an autumn wedding! it looks like it might have a burgundy type colour in it? If so, that’s what I’d pick out for accessorising … you will probably want a jacket but with those sleeves, I think a blazer type jacket would look better than a cardi! It would also make it slightly more autumny…
As for the thin fabric, would it hang differently with a slip? That may be enough to give a slightly less summery vibe.

Please don't wear a fake fur stole with it.

Honest opinion? It's not the world's most exciting dress. I would wear that as an everyday dress. I would wear it to the office but not if it was something like a client reception where I needed to be dressy.

But that's me and that's irrelevant. It's a perfectly decent and respectable dress and there's no reason why you can't wear it to a wedding. Get a pair of fancy shoes - I like patent but up to you - doesn't have to be heels. Pretty Ballerina for example do very fancy dressed up flats and a showy - off necklace and Bob's your uncle.

(The faux fur faux forties stoles will make it look like an am dram company with limited resources)

You don't need a jacket. You'll be inside most of the time so your normal coat left in the cloakroom is fine. Sticking a blazer over that dress will just hide and detract from the dress and you'll end up taking it off anyway.

OP that’s better, but… this has become ‘the MN dress’. It’s featured in so many threads it’s untrue. It’s everywhere! A triumph of marketing somehow. Such a high chance someone else will be wearing it. I knew what the dress would be before clicking the link.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/08/2023 17:56

faux fur faux forties stoles will make it look like an am dram company with limited resources) I love that description!!

Ok!

I'm not wearing it!

I'll reconsider when I get back from holiday.

I think I'd rather wear trousers. Is that allowed? Please don't mention a jumpsuit, I have never found one long enough in the body for me to stand up in.

A Pretty Balletinas - ok shoes, but don't go to a 43.

overthehillswegoo · 22/08/2023 17:59

Is that not a work dress?
I don't think you could even accessorise it

mewkins · 22/08/2023 18:04

I've been to pretty informal evening receptions and even the smart ones most people are already wilting and have changed into bare feet or flip flops so I don't think anyone will mind what evening guests are wearing. I quite like the shape of the original dress and even the colour. I'm not mad on the print but it's fine. I'd go with boots (calf length with a western heel) rather than shoes but mainly because I find shoes look a bit off balance with that dress length.

Trousers- from another wedding thread (for a bride who doesn't want a white wedding dress rather)

The stripy outfit is my choice. The blue and white was Capacious Hag's.
