Can I winterise this dress for a wedding evening do?

This dress has done sterling work for me this summer - it's been out to a couple of restaurants for friend's 50th, and with DH. Garden opera event. A wedding.

Whistles Dress

I'm going to a wedding evening do at the end of October. Can I "winterise" it at all? Not sure it cuts the mustard for winter, but I'm curious of any ideas.

Wedding reception is in a country house hotel. Service beforehand will be in the bride's home village church.

It's not a summer dress, I'd wear it for work all winter with tights and boots, but I don't think it's very "wedding" or "evening"

WarmButteryCrumpets · 22/08/2023 18:31

It's badly styled on the website

I always think if you can't make it look good in the advert, with the best lighting, a model figure and a team of stylists, how can you expect it to look good in real life?

I've resigned myself or the fact that any time a mumsnetter posts a dress that they think is gorgeous, I'm guaranteed to think it's horrible 🫣

MotherofPearl · 22/08/2023 19:25

I love the Ghost dress you posted upthread OP.

I love velvet, so if it were me I'd be opting for that for an autumn wedding. Brora usually have some beautiful velvet dresses (including very easy to wear and not constrictive velvet shifts and tunics). I have one in a colour they describe as Otter (!), but I have spotted a gorgeous emerald green one too. Worth a trawl?

I think I'd rather wear trousers. Is that allowed? Please don't mention a jumpsuit, I have never found one long enough in the body for me to stand up in.

Fair enough. I suggested this because the model wearing the jumpsuit is taller than op. Not everyone has tried phase 8. It's worth a try if she hasn't.

MuddlerInLaw · 22/08/2023 20:18

D’you have some trousers already, @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads?

Here’s a shirt to wear with … (Highly likely to fit, their sizing is incredibly generous.)

Here’s another - would look good with silk trousers.

No question of either of these only being for one night, surely?

indyocean · 22/08/2023 21:20

It looks very autumnal but also very casual

Trousers- from another wedding thread (for a bride who doesn't want a white wedding dress rather)

The stripy outfit is my choice. The blue and white was Capacious Hag's.

Not a wedding guest dress 1
Not a wedding guest dress 2

Dear God ...just as well we all have our own style.

MrsJBaptiste · 22/08/2023 22:40

@MrsFiddle I agree 😵‍💫

There isn't one item of clothing on this thread that is remotely nice!

HerMammy · 22/08/2023 22:59

@MuddlerInLaw
Did you not read OP doesn't want £200 items.
Also, gasping at that god awful
shapeless sack and your further offerings are not wedding wear, shapeless overpriced horrors.

poortui · 22/08/2023 23:46

I own this dress and I also love it OP! I’ve worn it loads - including to a wedding - it’s so versatile. I did also wear it in the winter, but in the day with boots and a jumper. It might be a bit too floaty for a winter evening do- but I do think PP are wrong saying it’s just an office dress.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/08/2023 15:40

Well. What a discussion.

I like the idea of that Raey dress, but hate the colour.

What is like a about the Whistles Dre's - it's patterned but not floral; it's colours that suit me; it's not tight and restrictive. I don't love that's it's viscose, but it hangs njcejy and has washed well. I don't particularly like tiered dresses, but this one big tier stake is better than several small ones.

The summer wedding was church/pot luck/BYOB/church hall. The autumn wedding will be more formal , in a country house hotel. It's not family - the bride is my graduate, who I trained up a few years ago. She's marrying one of our ex-apprentices - all very sweet.

Oh @MuddlerInLaw, my bank account was blissfully unaware of Sula until now, though struggling with why the Whistles dress is too informal (I agree), but the red floral print dress you've linked isn't.

Working on the basis that I'm 5'8", size 16, busty, curvey, size 9 feet, can't stand restrictive clothes and normally wear wear shorts, t shirt, hoody, sandals - I'm open to suggestions. I'm not in the market for single items costing upwards of £200-300/item, not for one evening.

The Whistles dress is very ordinary. The red Sula dress isn't. You (general you) might hate the red Sula dress but it's a wow dress - love it or loathe.

The Whistles dress looks very easy to wear and compared to some of the horrendous Silk Fred and Roman stuff that gets suggested for weddings it's a nice dress, but it's not a wow dress.

GarlicGrace · 23/08/2023 00:17

Not everybody wants to wow, @NatashaDancing.

Meanwhile, I hate you for introducing me to Après Paris 😂So much amazingness!

I know - but OP asked what the difference between the two dresses is. One is an ordinary, everyday day dress- the other isn't.

It's Mulder you have to thank/blame !

At the risk of hijacking the thread I so want this.

Over sized shirt

Really @NatashaDancing? 😯🙈
Would you iron it?

Sorry, I'm probably just showing my age 🤭

GarlicGrace · 23/08/2023 04:49

@TheLadyofShalott1, you just put me in mind of my poor Gran after she'd helpfully pressed my Levi's with a sharp crease down the legs 😂

Oops! Ithink I would know not to put creases in a pair of Levi's, I would have just ironed them with the seam on the side - and if they had those horrible non accidental tears in them I wouldn't try sewing them up (although I might consider putting in a patch from an older pair 😜), but I am sure I would have rolled my eyes and maybe muttered under my breath
"is that supposed to look attractive?"
I am also a gran, so maybe that explains it .. 🫠

ohcrums · 23/08/2023 06:22

I like your dress in the OP. It needs a jacket or perhaps a shrug?! And some closed shoes and then I think its winterised!

Doone21 · 23/08/2023 07:50

Layer it. Full slip petticoat underneath for added warmth and so it doesn't stick to your tights , go 40denier opaque to keep warm with black flats or smart ankle boots. Glamorous wrap ontop, look for something luxurious like velvet or fur that's unusual and interesting

@FoxyFeeling

I was thinking the same but then I see "shall I wear this to a wedding" posts most days, some costing £££ and I wouldn't pay tuppence for them. To eaches own.

This dress is fairly wintery myopic start with so paired with a jacket, tights and formal closed shoes it would be fine

gogomoto · 23/08/2023 08:09

But top tip for whistles if their marketing department read this, get larger models- the dress looks far better on the customer than their skinny model!

NancyJoan · 23/08/2023 08:25

Oversized double breasted blazer, ankle boots and opaque tights. Pay attention to your hair and makeup. You’ll look smart, presentable and church-appropriate, rather than glam or particularly fashionable, but I feel like that is a perfect fit for you.

MuddlerInLaw · 23/08/2023 08:45

That’s how people dress for a day of Christmas shopping round my way, @NancyJoan!

It’s an evening wedding reception, inside a building. Looking as if your main priority is keeping warm is all very well if you’re going to be outside, but surely everyone else will be dressed for dancing and drinking and tearful congratulations?
