Can I winterise this dress for a wedding evening do?

This dress has done sterling work for me this summer - it's been out to a couple of restaurants for friend's 50th, and with DH. Garden opera event. A wedding.

Whistles Dress

I'm going to a wedding evening do at the end of October. Can I "winterise" it at all? Not sure it cuts the mustard for winter, but I'm curious of any ideas.

Wedding reception is in a country house hotel. Service beforehand will be in the bride's home village church.

I think it's absolutely fine OP - would need a jacket obviously. I am guessing the look you are going for is acceptable, won't have people rolling their eyes at you for your inappropriate dress and you aren't trying to be centre stage. There is such a lot of angst about dressing for weddings on here - not from you - from all the posters with such a narrow idea of what is acceptable.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 24/08/2023 13:26

So - another dress with the same vibes as the one that the OP already has ? What's the point if she doesn't actually want to buy another dress if she doesn't have to? Plus the OP's dress is a lot nicer .

Rubbish! Grin I doubt I spend even 10 minutes in a year thinking about wedding clothes in my real life. I’m pretty sure most people on this thread are taking an engaged interest because that’s what makes on online discussion forum entertaining. We’ve been invited to express an opinion. If I encounter people at an actual wedding my entire reaction is Oh, how lovely, a wedding! Don’t they all look happy.

@annlee3817
It's got a very 1940's feel to it, so some nice close toe shoes and a faux fur stole maybe?
brilliant!!

I this is great advice along with @NatashaDancing's comment on a great piece of costume jewllery.

MuddlerInLaw · 22/08/2023 09:30

It’s a day dress, @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads. The entire jewellery stock of all the royal palaces couldn’t make it evening wear. Combination of shape, print, non-luxury fabric - it’s perfectly nice but there’s not a single thing about it that indicates celebration.

No one’s going to turn you away at the door - but if you can find or afford something else …

😂 sorry , OP but this is very funny !

Except it doesn't have a 1940s feel to it.

Changes17 · 24/08/2023 16:20

Just to say, I think it’s a lovely dress and given that it’s now on sale might have got myself one, had they not only had size 6.

@MuddlerInLaw

Exactly ! Yet any thread on here where the OP asks whether she can wear a perfectly acceptable dress she already owns to a wedding, the majority of responses are along the lines of 'you cannot possibly wear that' 'too informal' 'looks like a day dress' etc. I think a thread where a poster has questioned the wearing of a perfectly nice dress she already owns deserves a different response to one where she is saying 'I'm clueless - please choose me a frock'

NatashaDancing · 24/08/2023 17:52

I didn't say it couldn't be worn. I said

Obviously it's a perfectly decent and respectable dress and wouldn't cause any faux pas at a wedding but equally you could pop out to do the grocery shopping in that outfit and nobody would notice.

And that it didn't need to be "winterised"

Ok I suppose everything from "but" onwards was an unasked for opinion.

neelhtak · 24/08/2023 22:04

I think it's beautiful and very suitable for winter or any season

i LOVE this idea. Maybe cut out brogues with coloured or lacey tights.

Or heeled Mary Janes.

I was going to suggest a more 1970s vibe with a skinny rib polo under the dress or a fitted tank top over it, and long heeled boots.

Or you could go 1980s-ish with a floaty coatigan and heeled slouch boots.

It's quite a versatile dress.

I like to think so... my dc wouldn't agree. I'm not really standard-issue professional-woman-in-her-50s-mum-of-teens. Swimmer shoulders, cyclist calves and size 9 feet limit what fits off the peg. 25 years in construction has probably lowered my standards on what's "smart" (my work clothes are black jeans, polo shirt, fleece, hi vis jacket, safety wellies). And I have very thick, curly, unruly hair that defies styling.

I suspect that I havn't really found my tribe here. This thread has largely battered my confidence to ever go anywhere other than Tesco's, wearing a ball gown, ever again. But I'll get over that. Going on holiday for the first time in 4 years in a moment, so I'll reconsider my options, my finances and autumn stock in the shops when I return.

OP, as a fellow size niner may I heartily recommend Otto and Ivy for really lovely shoes?

Oaktree55 · 25/08/2023 12:49

It's horrible nowhere near dressy enough for a wedding. Drab and unflattering even on a size 8 model I'd imagine!

Try personal shopping if you can't make good decisions (I can't either)

Waffle78 · 25/08/2023 21:53

Wear thermals under it I'm not if it's the type of dress you could wear thick winter tights with though. I'm not sure what jacket you could wear with it. I went to a wedding in a barn conversion and it was freezing. The only heating was a wood burner but with the high ceilings it didn't throw much heat out.

It isn't horrible. It's not the most exciting dress in the world but there isn't actually any rule that only dresses above a certain level of "dressyness" can be worn at a wedding. It's nicer than the awful SilkFred stuff that pops up on most wedding guest dress threads.

This is unnecessary.

It is not a horrible dress at all, if you have followed the post you will see that OP has got good use from it so far.

Please don’t let all the judgement on here knock your confidence OP- people seem to have very narrow ideas about what people should be wearing! Not everyone suits super-smart or dressy outfits. Personally I hate feeling fussy or overdressed.

I wore this exact dress to get married in - which I’m sure will cause a number of posters to have a minor heart attack. I’ve also worn it many times since- it always gives me pleasure and I have had many compliments on it.

I despair at the way people think it acceptable to speak to others these days. It's the style and beauty forum. One of the nicer sections here People have opinions of course, but OP doesn't need to be stomped on because her style isn't the same as others.

Anyway OP, I hope you have a fabulous holiday.

Totally agree, no need to be so rude! It’s not like the OP was seeking opinions on the dress, just advice on how to wear it for a particular occasion. People don’t go around shouting ‘Your dress is horrible!’ in someone’s face in real life so why is it supposed to be fine on here.

PrinceHaz · 26/08/2023 13:26

Go on ASOS and type in “wedding guest dress” or look at the dresses in the tall section. Very cheap and some pleasant dresses. A lot of the larger sizes are sold out but there are some nice size 14s still available.
