Can I winterise this dress for a wedding evening do?

This dress has done sterling work for me this summer - it's been out to a couple of restaurants for friend's 50th, and with DH. Garden opera event. A wedding.

Whistles Dress

I'm going to a wedding evening do at the end of October. Can I "winterise" it at all? Not sure it cuts the mustard for winter, but I'm curious of any ideas.

Wedding reception is in a country house hotel. Service beforehand will be in the bride's home village church.

Sorry for all the flack you've got op. More people should be rewearing clothing due to tbe devastating effect fast fashion has on the environment. I'd style it with boots and a trench coat (which I can rewear) Enjoy the wedding and stick it to the haters 😉

Go on ASOS and type in “wedding guest dress” or look at the dresses in the tall section. Very cheap and some pleasant dresses. A lot of the larger sizes are sold out but there are some nice size 14s still available.

Do not ever Google "wedding guest dress" . The suggestions offered will almost certainly be genuinely "horrible".

The dress is not horrible. It's ordinary but meets all the wedding etiquette rules (real and the bonkers MN ones). It doesn't need a jacket or a stole or faux vintage accessories.

I agree. I tried one suggested on a wedding guest thread here and it was awful polyester nightmare.

I think it’s absolutely fine for a wedding. I would look for a jacket in case it’s cold.

And those saying it’s Office wear? I work for a large corporate firm and everyone wears jeans and leggings. To the point they are ditching the formal Christmas parties as no one owns a suit. (Obviously we girls all wore ball gowns to work previously)

It's an evening do. OP won't need a jacket.

As for whether or not it's "office wear" , depends where you work. It's more casual than I wear to work.

Jackets don’t go with dresses

it’s an evening do for a wedding! It’s a special event! Just suck up being cold for one evening , you’ll be fine especially with a few drinks inside you.

LuckySantangelo35 I so agree. I was beginning to think I was a lone voice. Almost every wedding guest thread will recommend a blazer/ bolero over a dress.

Jackets over dresses are a way of getting from your home to the venue - it's rare that the jacket looks good enough to be kept on.

We have the same dimensions except I’m a size 18. Search for occasion wear. That dress is just a day dress.

Fushia123 · 26/08/2023 22:11

I think the model’s own photo is really flattering and I’m sure you’ll look the same. My advice would be to wear it with possibly another unseen layer underneath - cami/ vest top for warmth. You won’t need much more for an evening do. Add some bangles, earrings and a choker. Have your hair washed and styled at a hairdressers and get your nails painted dark red. Add some make up that you are happy in and go for it. A confident you is all it needs to shine!

Interestingly The Times has an article on work clothes at the moment. These are their examples of some appropriate dresses - I don’t know if that marks these clothes as not dressy enough for a wedding or other special event …

It looks too much like loungewear imo. The Crew cardigan.

Abdua · 26/09/2023 10:16

I think that it could totally work out as a dress for a summer wedding.
I hope that you had a blast and that the wedding went well!
