I was going to pop in to ask about sizing and can see it's already being discussed. I was tempted to treat myself to one of the wonderful wool jumpers but looks like I might fall in the gap between sizes now? I'm generally 12/14, especially as I'm big busted. This doesn't seem to fit into their sizing chart at all - would the biggest size be way too big? I'm never 16, definitely not 18 (not that I'd mind wearing something with those size labels if that was the right size for me). Has anyone tried any knitwear yet this season and how was the sizing?

@ilovecherries .. I meant to say earlier, but forgot until now , that I really like that mac on you .. especially unbelted... You really Must keep.. ( or if not, sell to me !)

Brillenbar47 · 03/09/2023 20:13

I had the joy of wearing my blue sail stripe dress withy fave white ancient greek sandals today and crocheting in the garden. And I am thankful that my surviving parent is old school socialist and approves of second hand and disaproves off the DM 🧁

dudsville · 03/09/2023 20:18

Lots to catch up on! @ilovecherries ,I really like that mac but it sounds like it's going to be too big, also there's a reason you haven't worn it. What is that? I have that mac and wear it tons.

Re the clothing made in china, i read a review once in their site where a customer remarked on this and toast replied saying that they used... i can't recall how but it was some ethical group of makers... something, so i don't worry about that with them.

As for my own ethics re my footprint, it is something i could work on, and if i was going to be really good i would stop shopping now for a good few years. But i agree with you all, the reason for the returns is you just don't know how something's going to fit. One order in the last sale was made up of 3 dresses in 2 sizes, one pair of dresses both got sent back so i could order a 3rd size (kept that one!). I've never had this with any other shop.

In a previous topic on the wizardry art of layering, i was googling today, still on the hunt for the perfect white blouse to wear under jumpers, and i came across multiple lists of rules to layering that all mentioned the risk of looking like you're heading back to school. I feel like I've learned something about why i struggle to make this work.

Today's glorious sunny weather has had me in this dress. Anyone else have it? I love it so much and usually wear it at christmas.

Does anyone remember this leather cuff from some years ago? It was a collaboration with Lizzy Disney. I have worn mine to death, I love it. A while ago, the metal piece inside that keeps its shape snapped, but it was still completely wearable. But now, the leather has split at the seam and it isn’t really wearable anymore. I wondered if I could get it repaired by the maker, or at least if they could give me some info on what kind of glue I might try to use, but although I can find a website for Lizzy Disney, it doesn’t look very active and I can’t see any contact details.
Does anyone 1. know what kind of glue I could try (it needs to work on leather and be very flexible), 2. have one of these they no longer want and feel like selling to me!, 3. have any ideas of Lizzy Disney is still in business and where I might find contact details?
Thanks.

Stravaig · 03/09/2023 20:25

@ScottishMouse You could look for a local leather worker? An independent craftsperson who makes belts or bags or saddlery or whatever, often bespoke. They'd know how to repair.

ScottishMouse · 03/09/2023 20:34

Oh good idea @Stravaig, why didn’t I think of that?! Thanks.

OftenOrange · 03/09/2023 20:52

@dudsville your dress looks great , I’m jealous of your central heating if you wear it at Christmas!
I never complained about hot flushes because at least I felt warm for once !
@ScottishMouse I hope that you can get the cuff repaired, it sounds like a signature piece and so will be worth the £ getting fixed.

Stravaig · 03/09/2023 21:06

@ScottishMouse It's got such a beautiful well-loved patina, I hope you can salvage it!

Laska2Meryls · 03/09/2023 21:08

Ooh that's lovely @ScottishMouse .. I d have loved one of those if I had seen it ( but must have been before I discovered Toast ) ..definite envy ... Yes , I would look for a local leather craftsperson and get them to quote.. They can probably make a new cuff using the original brass tag

dudsville · 03/09/2023 22:08

@OftenOrange I'm in the hot time of my life!

Countmeout · 04/09/2023 08:15

I think your raincoat is lovely @ilovecherries , it looks best belted imo but I can see how you feel it is too big - the shoulders look very big in the other picture - does a big jumper make a difference in the fit? . I’d be tempted to keep it and see how it goes. It might feel better with other clothes . Not sure if you feel your weight loss is permanent but I found I put a few pounds on again and then was sorry I’d thrown some stuff out that might have been wearable again.

Love that cuff @ScottishMouse , hope you get it sorted.

Is the second hand clothes partially a class thing? Some people like to keep up the illusion of having plenty. And if you’ve had second hand as a child you may feel you have ‘moved up/on and never want it again. My mother was one of 5 and I’m sure clothing was mended and handed down , they came from a small barely profitable farm, but because there was just me she always bought new, and if that was out of the question ( as it quite often was) money wise she made something for me, we spent hours in the Spinning Mill looking for remnants . She could have made something in no time at all . As a consequence I love bought clothes ( and I can’t sew for toffee) .

Countmeout · 04/09/2023 09:57

Ridiculously excited. I have an actual Toast catalogue.

Catching up with this thread makes Monday mornings a bit more bearable so cheers all 😘

Agree with PP @ilovecherries the oversized fit of the mac is bang on trend and the length perfect, it would be my go-to this season! (Though I understand if not everyone is such a trend sheep 😅and if it's not sparking joy for you probably best to let it go to make room for true loves.)

Agog at SdRW statements and loving your robust responses! She can give her environmental halo one extra rub as I decided not to place my order in hopes of Kindred socks and got this checked shirtdress bargain on ebay instead. @Countmeout I agree with the class/cultural element. In my workplace (academia) I would hesitate to admit to buying new clothes to my Anglo-American colleagues (or bringing clothes up at all), while European/Asian ones have sometimes expressed how tricky they find navigating the shabby-professional code here.

@faustina - I bought some sale items on 22/9/22, which was a Thursday, presumably the day that the sale started.

My ‘money’ is therefore on Thursday 21/9 for this year 🤞if they do another end of summer sale.

Yes, I bought a reduced dress on 22/9 last year so am now holding back to see if they have another mini sale

Snowyowl78 · 04/09/2023 10:34

I reckon it might be this Thursday, 2021 was.

Alpacasoft · 04/09/2023 10:36

I think the horror at second handclothes can be either from days when second hand anything often came with lice or if poverty has been experienced, not wanting to go back there.
Likewise some people assume knitting means nasty nylon cards or crochet a loo roll holder 😂

Saurus72 · 04/09/2023 10:41

@clowniform I have that dress and love it! I bought it for under £50 in a sale a few years ago, it’s a great AW work dress. Yes, academia can be strange although I think it’s changing (maybe? Perhaps not in Oxbridge). I worked in HE for 10+ years and I have to say I never changed what I wore.

Nanasueathome · 04/09/2023 10:59

Ooohhhh, my Toast catalogue has just arrived

Alpacasoft · 04/09/2023 11:44

I have that dress.

dudsville · 04/09/2023 11:58

I've got that dress too @clowniform , love it!

Snowyowl78 · 04/09/2023 12:10

All my old wish list has appeared from sales of ye olde (121 items!) makes me think they are being loaded for sale

Alpacasoft · 04/09/2023 12:18

Oops sorry didn't finish my post.
I got that dress for £40 in an archive sale.
Pic doesn't do it justice.

Also have recently bought the seed check shirt and dress super cheap
Again toast pics don't show how lovely the fabric is.

faustina · 04/09/2023 13:02

@clowniform - hah! Yes I imagine Toast will be thrilled that you didn't give them your money

About second-hand: It could be a legacy from not having much. I taught English in Germany a very long time ago (the 80s) and the kilo sales there were AMAZING. Someone told me it was a legacy from the post war period and there was still a horror of poverty and being seen to be poor
