I thought they said before it absolutely would not be profit making?

Another quote: 'The idea is that the Toast "community" will hand back unwanted clothing, accessories and homewares because they would like them to find a proper home.
"Customers can trust Toast to do the right thing with these products.. " says DeRW
...
She says customers are already selling items via online marketplaces or giving them to charity, but have expressed concerns about what happens to them.. Thats why Toast is handling the whole business rather than outsourcing"... Etc

Something missing here, Suzie? Or maybe I am just not 'concerned' enough !!!🤣

Laska2Meryls · 03/09/2023 11:56

Oh it is Willner.. I read it wrong ...my mistake! .. and I cant edit my post s...

Stravaig · 03/09/2023 11:58

Ah yes, Toast ReProfit 😉🤣

ilovecherries · 03/09/2023 12:07

Funny, I seem to manage to recycle my Toast clothes all by myself, without any assistance. (And buy other people’s -oops). Maybe I just have a special gene. I just feel this is a misstep. One of the great things about Toast clothes is their durability, even if they end up in charity shops I suspect they are snapped up.

Haha. No bloody chance! I’d GIVE it to an actual person before that.

That is such a load of bollocks - honestly, Toast things are very easy to find a new home for!

I think that coat looks good oversized as it is @ilovecherries but you look uncomfortable in it (if that makes sense)

Trinitybean · 03/09/2023 12:56

Hilarious, one of the reasons I buy Toast is so if I'm ever in need of funds I can re-sell to I'm sure what will be a deserving being!

Stoic123 · 03/09/2023 12:57

It's a lovely mac @ilovecherries but it probably wears you rather than the other way around.

@Laska2Meryls - that is funny, thanks for sharing.

Toast clothes last so well that it will be at least 5 years time before I have very old stuff worth handing to them for recycling instead of reselling.......if the iniative is still going by then. In the meantime, I will endeavour to ensure everything sold goes to a good home (no Toast abusers!).

H&M, which I sometimes wear, has been doing a recycling service since 2013. Their clothes don't command the same level of resale value and can wear old more quickly so I will use the service if don't donate to charity (they give a £5 thank you voucher).

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 03/09/2023 13:00

@ilovecherriesTo make sure we are 'trustworthy' enough to own Toast clothing maybe we should be made to sign a contract when we buy things to say when we no longer want them we MUST return them to toast.

Laska2Meryls · 03/09/2023 13:07

Or an Adoption Certificate perhaps but with a renewal date?

Stravaig · 03/09/2023 13:09

So essentially renting?

If Toast garments languish unworn for too long, maybe they will simply vanish from our wardrobes? Like all manner of digital content auto-deleting.

Laska2Meryls · 03/09/2023 13:07

That would work. No more bonkers than what they’re proposing anyway.

OftenOrange · 03/09/2023 13:18

@Saurus The Bryan dress is beautiful on you, perfect fit and altogether delightful.
@ilovecherries I simply love that Mac on you, I think it looks cool and on trend worn oversized. & unbelted . Belted looks sharp and sassy.
What’s not to like?

re Observer article: I take that as a huge insult, the woman is clearly patronising and

is going about alienating her core customers extremely well.
Stuff all this holier and thou talk,Toast do not use organic cotton ( unlike Beaumont who are actually transparent about the provenance) and so long as they continue to use Chinese manufacturers I don’t believe a word of all this spiel.

Stravaig · 03/09/2023 13:59

Plus, if Toast actually gave a flying fig about the environment, sustainability, the wellbeing of the planet and so on, the very first thing they should have done, years ago, is to put detailed garment measurements for each item online, so customers aren't having to order multiple sizes and sending a gazillion parcels back and forth. Also sensible, standardised sizing, that vaguely correlates with the body measurement size chart.

(Those would be measurements taken manually from the finished garment, each size, each colour, after it arrives in your warehouse. Raising an eyebrow at shops who will, if measurements are requested, email what appears to be the specification chart used by manufacturers, which sometimes does not correlate at all with the garment actually received. Dodgy QC there.)

Saurus72 · 03/09/2023 14:08

Thanks for all the nice words about my dress, I love it. Agree on having no idea about sizing now, and the Toast size recommendation tool thingie has got it wrong every time for me. I think I will just need to order 2 sizes of everything now, but will try to go to an actual shop to buy. I really miss it being sold in JL, much easier.

There was a ‘don’t forget to donate your unwanted Toast items back to us’ flyer in my order. I agree re: Chinese manufacturing, non-organic cotton, sometimes unclear info re: materials origin etc - sorting these elements of the business is where actual positive change lies. Not this greenwashing.

They are a for-profit business and that’s fine. Trying to imply anything different is weird and, I think given by everyone’s reaction here, disingenuous and just plain weird 🤷‍♀️

Dee1224 · 03/09/2023 14:09

I completely agree with you @OftenOrange - goodness knows who is making the Chinese clothes and under what conditions. I know many/most other companies also use China, but they don’t bang on about ethics in such a ‘holier than thou’ manner. I try to avoid the clothes made in China, but it’s hard.

I also agree with you, @Stravaig - I felt really bad about my returns last sale and will try to avoid doing the same again. Plus all the problems I had with refunds caused me a lot of time and stress sorting out.

Dee1224 · 03/09/2023 14:14

Agreeing with you, too @Saurus72 ! Why do Toast pretend they are not in it for the money? Of course they are, and that’s fine😸

Also on the sizing/returns/environmental impact/cost, etc. Why oh why won’t Toast have their sale items in shops like normal companies? I know not everyone can get to a shop, but it would help reduce returns. It’s like they think they are too ‘posh’ for sales - for goodness sake, Toast is lovely, but it’s not Chanel, (who are also weird about reductions 🤣).

Alpacasoft · 03/09/2023 14:15

RockaLock · 03/09/2023 11:12

@Alpacasoft I have the radicchio Bryn size small, and I'm currently dithering as to whether it's slightly too roomy or not!

The website says the model is wearing an S, and I'm definitely not as small as the model, so in theory it should be right on me, but I'm just not quite sure. Plus I'm at that peri stage of life where my weight is probably only likely to go one way...

Don't know if I can be bothered to go through the hassle of reordering an XS to check, though.

Please, Toast, if you ever read these threads, put the actual garment measurements on your website!!!

I'm happy with the roominess and drape on mine, what I meant was as @Saurus72 describes not knowing what size to order in the blue Bryn
Fed up with it being so variable.
Toast if you are reading this PLEASE can we have garment measurements ?
It must be expensive for you to deal with all the returns.

Stravaig · 03/09/2023 14:18

@Dee1224 As customers, we don't really have a choice but to order multiple sizes - that's very much on Toast to sort out. Along with the erratic and sometimes unpleasant returns process. It really does seem that they've sourced their warehousing and despatch process, but they insisted not when I asked 🤷‍♀️

I do think they've abandoned any pretence at financial accessibility. Prices keep going up; marketing is ever more 'aspirational'; and needing to order multiple sizes, and therefore have multiples of money temporarily out of circulation, is much harder on lower incomes with less access to credit.

Alpacasoft · 03/09/2023 14:19

Also Yes to changing their cotton to organic.
I buy the Fat face organic cotton tops for this reason plus they are beautifully made with French seams and only £39.
Agree this ridiculous enterprise is green washing and a bloody cheek to boot!

This is a different type of concern, but something I noticed in my local Toast shop (and I presume was the same in other branches) was that they never installed a Perspex partition at the till counter during covid. This felt very much like a choice made because the aesthetic did not suit their brand. I personally was not worried about it from a protection point of view, but I am sure many were, and it irked every time I went in given that every other shop and cafe I ever went into had one.
