Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

Off topic, but you people are amazing for TV recommendations! Really enjoyed the Miss Willoughby film, and now immersing myself in Miss Fisher! Any other suggestions? Either for style inspo or just good Autumn feels?

MsAnnFrope · 21/09/2023 19:57

I’m adoring all the DA - both country house gothic and more edgy town styles.
but as a shortish size 14 is this a look that can work? I’m more hippy yoga trousers and linen shirt territory and I’m fearful both of feeling constricted and looking like a tweed/ velvet dumpling.
all thoughts on this welcomed!
in my dreams I’m Aunt Zelda from The Tales of Sabrina but in reality I’m more Mrs Weasley.

@venus7 that jacket sounds wonderful! I am also loving this thread so much. Have put chestnut oil in my oil burner tonight and lit a "mushroom forest" tk Maxx candle (which smells much nicer than it sounds 😄). Had sausages with carrot and parsnip mash for dinner tonight. I'm feeling cosy!

helenahandcart78 · 21/09/2023 20:03

@venus7 sorry - also need more info on the lipstick please?

Never, ever apologise for needing more info on a lipstick; especially Chanel!
Most years, I buy myself a Chanel lipstick for my birthday (early next month, since you ask!) last year it was shade 209, Alter Ego......not burnt red, as everyone is wanting for this look, and I agree, it looks fabulous...this one is a strange nude. I rarely wear nude, but I am strange.

Been admiring the vintage DA looks and pieces posted 😍 Love seeing people dressed like that, it's so polished looking!

Some more inspiration:
• skirt from Mango, they also feature a fantastic long grey one with wide pleats but not listed yet
• Mrs Coulter, she chose looks AND books
• Pinterest photo, love how this outfit could be from the 60s or something I'd see in town today

Today felt like PROPER autumn: a definite chill in the air, mist in the early morning, though it was gorgeously sunny until evening.

@helenahandcart78 re Victoriana boots Memery shoes may fit the bill. They have a fab selection.

https://memery.eu/collections/vintage-boots/products/feminine-soft-edwardian-boot-with-pompadour-heel-1900-1915-black-rose

Edited

They are lovely and I'm really not wanting to sound picky but the ones I loved had a rounded toe. Better for brawling in 19th century Birmingham a la Peaky Blinders. (Hope that's not offensive to anyone? Here in NI we have to be careful of our historical references 🙏)

helenahandcart78 · 21/09/2023 21:03

@evtheria all wonderful as per from you! You've got the knack. I need more warm colours in my wardrobe. Saw a gorgeous (fake) silk rust coloured blouse with a collar bow tie in a charity shop window on the weekend. I asked if I could try it on. They literally had to climb over a mountain of children's toys and furniture to get it and then it just gaped too much at the boobs. I was gutted but I think they were more gutted at all the effort 🤣 I did buy other stuff though so I don't feel too guilty!

teawamutu · 21/09/2023 21:26

This is nearly as good as the Old Lady threads 😁

I love a lot of the DA style recs here, but I think I'm more academia/preppy than the Gothic/Victorian end of the spectrum.

Wore wide legged tweedy trousers, a fitted Liberty shirt and flat vintage ankle boots for a work event today and felt fab - businesslike but individual.

Have just ordered a gorgeous woven leather oversize bag from Vinted and pondering chunky brogues, a short wrap skirt and rollnecks in autumn colours.

Hello! I loved that "old lady" thread but not sure where to find it? It had all my fave autumn things - shawls, jigsaws, candles, and small (large) glasses of sherry 🥰

That's the first one. Second is called something like 'old ladies are experts at life and we are fools'. I adore them.

Wonderful @teawamutu that'll be my bedtime reading tonight ☺️

For those who love vintage style boots - always been my favorite then you may like the Jobear Boots website as much as I. Alas I cannot afford anything from them just now but definitely something I aspire to one day. They make various styles and often make them for films too. So they look excellent and also very high quality.

I am wearing one of my vinted found dresses today. It has a lovely white broderie collar with a dress that is midi length on me (I am tall ish) with small white flowers . I am not very good at describing but I am very happy it is autumn and I get to wear tights and dresses to work (I am an academic librarian). I enjoy summer but find dressing for work in warm months much trickier.

A hint of fresh air and leaf mould? 😉😆

Seriously though... you conjure up some seriously seductive imagery there. Yum!

mightymalties · 22/09/2023 12:16

Those Jobear boots are exquisite! If only my poor injured foot would return to a somewhat normal width ;(

Merryhobnobs · 22/09/2023 15:26

They do Mens shoes as well so quite a few options. Hope your foot is better soon.,

helenahandcart78 · 22/09/2023 19:43

Good evening fellow Questers! No news on the style front and at the risk of derailing, I just thought you'd like to know I have apple and cinnamon oil mixed with cedar oil in the burner tonight. And a "ripened pear" candle going as well. Happy autumn everyone and may the Dark force be with you on this Friday night! 🥰

RedLem0nade · 22/09/2023 19:50

Ooh @helenahandcart78 that sounds delicious. I bought some ripened pears myself earlier- to make Pear and Ginger muffins in the morning. They make the kitchen smell amazing.

I’ll shortly be settling into my rocking chair by the fire with a pot of tea, a book and some candles lit. Old lady goals! I LOVE Autumn.

helenahandcart78 · 22/09/2023 19:53

@RedLem0nade you are speaking my lingo there! We are planning a shepherd's pie with cauliflower cheese for Sunday dinner, followed by sticky toffee pudding. And lashings of red wine 😂😂 Don't think we got the barbecue out once this summer so long live Autumn 🥮🍂🍁 Sorry again everyone for going off-topic 😁

helenahandcart78 · 22/09/2023 19:54

@Kdubs1981 - yeah, a hint of leaf mould possibly...but it's lovely 😆

helenahandcart78 · 22/09/2023 20:00

Actually, I do have a style question. What do we think of these? Picked them up (charity shop again!) a couple of years ago and haven't really known how to wear them. Are they DA suitable?

Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?
RedLem0nade · 22/09/2023 20:07

They could definitely work. Dark skinny jeans or fitted-at-the-ankle trousers, blazer or longline cardigan, a nice drapey scarf and satchel.

This kind of vibe perhaps?

helenahandcart78 · 22/09/2023 20:11

Thanks @RedLem0nade I like those suggestions. Might have to have a play about with the wide legged trousers and see if I could tuck them in (possibly a disaster!). I'm weird about black tights and brown footwear so maybe dark navy blue or choc brown woollen tights with a kilt. I'm just a little reticent about the furry top - maybe a bit naff??

helenahandcart78 · 22/09/2023 20:24

Sorry guys. I'm doing it again, straying from the style path. But just wanted to show you my Autumn coloured doggo ☺️
