Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

I’m adoring all the DA - both country house gothic and more edgy town styles.
but as a shortish size 14 is this a look that can work? I’m more hippy yoga trousers and linen shirt territory and I’m fearful both of feeling constricted and looking like a tweed/ velvet dumpling.
all thoughts on this welcomed!
in my dreams I’m Aunt Zelda from The Tales of Sabrina but in reality I’m more Mrs Weasley.

Hello, lovely! I missed your post last night and didn't want you to think you'd been ignored ❤️ So, my take on this is that you can carry off this look in many different ways. A buxom lass in a polo neck and kilt with chunky boots, or a pleated long skirt and fitted blazer will look as fabulous as a tall gazelle type! To me, the essentials are still interesting fabrics, textures and rich colours. Nothing to restrict anyone of any size. And the slouchy look can be balanced - so a figured blouse/shirt (no gaping buttons if possible though - don't get me started on the death of bust darts again 😂) and a flowing skirt, or a loose jumper with a more fitted skirt or cropped trousers with low heeled boots. I'm no gazelle myself and a shortie but I'm finding enough inspiration to keep me invested. I think we should love our shapes whatever they are. Sorry, I've rambled there! But would love to hear your further thoughts on this 🤗

Your dog is adorable @helenahandcart78! And very much in keeping with the DA aesthetic 😍

tiktokoclock · 22/09/2023 21:15

@RedLem0nade the pics in your last post, can I ask where the blazer is from?

Thank you my lady ☺️ He is an absolute darling with the grumpiest eyebrows ever. And thick as mince 🤣

RedLem0nade · 22/09/2023 21:20

Jinx!!😂

Wonderful @tiktokoclock and @RedLem0nade - great minds!

Really enjoying this thread. I love the look. In a similar vein, I've been trying (and failing miserably) to find the thread from a while ago about boho/DA vibe dressing. The title, I thought, referenced wanting to look like Linda from The Pursuit of Love/ Cassandra in the sink from I Capture the Castle.
Would love to look through it again - can anyone more techsavvy than me (i.e amoeba on Mars...) help me to locate it??

agapanthus1979 · 23/09/2023 07:37

@RedLem0nade that a great find - thank you.
There is another more recent one though - definitely within the last few months.

agapanthus1979 · 23/09/2023 08:57

@RedLem0nade YES!!!! That's the one. Thank you so much!

Ok I’m feeling inspired. Speak to me of jewellery. Apart from my wedding/engagement ring I’ve barely worn any for years. Generally wear yellow but have some pearls and it my birthday next month so I’m thinking of a jewellery restock!

Happy Saturday my friends! Have been doing more wardrobe grazing. I await your comments/critiques/tweaks with anticipation! 😂

@MsAnnFrope funny you should say that about jewellery! I've been having a poke and come up these. Just costume obvs but the colours are good I think. A couple more outfit ideas too. Have to go out now but may do more later...

helenahandcart78 · 23/09/2023 14:33

Just realised the jewellery pics were a bit rubbish so here's another few.

I'm thinking this outfit has gone wrong - it's the flat cap isn't it 🤣

Darkacademic · 23/09/2023 14:36

Maybe with a beret rather than cap?

RedLem0nade · 23/09/2023 14:46

@agapanthus1979 you’re welcome!

@helenahandcart78 you’ve got so many great pieces in your wardrobe. Love the brown wide leg trousers and blazer combo particularly. Jewellery definitely has the DA vibe😊

RedLem0nade · 23/09/2023 14:49

@MsAnnFrope I think marcasite is a very DA look when it comes to jewellery.

Perhaps something like these for a birthday gift if you are an earrings person?

Thought I'd show off my Dark Academia gel manicure. Love it so much that I'm going back to get matching toes! Tonight I'll be lighting my White Company Autumn candle for the first time and starting Peaky Blinders, also for the first time. Seems suitably dark and Autumnal x

@Darkacademic yes, you're right. A beret would look a little more urban chic than the flat cap - which says a day at the races with the horse trainers 😁

@Bookist ah your nails are absolutely gorgeous - and I love your ring! Unfortunately I started biting my nails again last year, having stopped about 20 years ago. I'm finding it very hard to break the habit again 😩
