Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

I adore the DA aesthetic, but work to a very tight budget, so mostly I buy from Vinted. Had next to no luck with charity shops so far!

Revival is a good place to look for clothing, and check out Memery for shoes (they have a big sale on at the moment!). I live semi-rural and find the "town and country" type stores have loads id love to buy, but sadly out of budget for me.

Have you looked for vintage stores locally? In my nearest city, most are aimed at students, but I happened across one tucked on a side street which is perfect (run by a lovely old gentleman, who hasn't a clue about building an online presence! Maybe also look out for vintage fairs, old-timey 1940s events, etc.

Bombshell has some riding/cossack type coats.

Also Google Memery mainly shoes but branching into knits.

It seems to be a look reminiscent of Droopy & Brown's.

It might be worth having a day trip to Cambridge.

I love the DA aesthetic, but it doesn't suit my colouring (and face), so I quite often dress in Romantic Academia style.

OP, I'd recommend looking at

  1. lacey/ delicate blouses if you want a bit of that Edwardian/Victorian look - my go to is Sezane. I'm attaching a photo below of a lacey blouse I got from there (sorry you can't see the whole blouse, that's the only photo of it I have, but I think you can get what "vibe" I'm talking about by looking at the sleeves). Can't seem to find the same lacey shirt at Sezane's website now, but they have lots of other beautiful shirts and blouses with lace. From fussier variants a) Cassy Shirt - White - Sézane (sezane.com) b) Gaya Shirt - White - Sézane (sezane.com) to something more elegant and sophisticated c) Chlo Shirt - White - Silk - Sézane (sezane.com) All the links above show white shirts, but they have lots of other colourways available.

  2. I'd also be on the lookout for the new Ines de la Fressange collab with Uniqlo. It doesn't seem to be announced at the UK website yet, but you can have a sneak peek at it here: ines de la fressangeの検索結果 | ユニクロ公式 (uniqlo.com)
They have velvet skirts (!), corduroy trousers and some lovely wooly wide legged trousers coming up. Everything from the colour palette to materials and silhouettes is very DA.

Batsheva dresses (in dark colours) if you want that Edwardian look?... bit pricy but often there are sales.

I used to have a tweed cape I adored and I'm still on the hunt for a replacement so following this thread with interest!

Ohwhatadag · 01/08/2023 04:40

I had no idea this existed. Looks amazing. I think i may have found my style (been looking to move on from rock/indie kid for the last 20 years in a limiting fog of overwork, not enough money, children and hopelessness).

If I have got it right, it is based around: cord, tweed, flannel, silk/satin, cotton and wool materials. Loose but fitted, with waist sometimes excentuated. Muted autumn colours. Tweed, dresses, pinafors, skirts, blouses and trousers.

Fab!

I’m not sure if it would suit, and I can’t vouch for how good it is, but Linennaive on instagram has some lovely skirts that would meet this look

EricandEnid · 01/08/2023 07:37

That cape is beautiful!

squashyhat · 01/08/2023 07:47

Very Harriet Vane!

What are you talking about?!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/08/2023 07:51

I used to have a beautiful brown tweed pencil skirt with little splits around the hem. God, I loved that skirt.

I’m thinking librarian chic, but assuming there’s a crossover to dark academia.

crochetmonkey74 · 01/08/2023 08:04

I love this look. I like the American leaning one, like you might have been in Harvard in the autumnal 1950s.

Everyday is a school day on the Style & Beauty board! Did a quick google and it looks like the moody cousin to the luxe/Italian grandparent aesthetic (which, funnily, I have just been explaining to another poster on a different thread)! Does the New Yorker article I have linked describe it well?
Think I could fall in love with it and will also be reading with intrigue.

I love tha sound of this other aesthetic too, what thread were you discussing that on?

Shhhh
We don't talk to each other like this in Style and Beauty

highlandcoo · 01/08/2023 08:52

Wow - have woken up to so many brilliant ideas - rushing out for a (damp) walk with friends now but really looking forward to exploring all these possibilities later Smile
