Dark Academia - anyone who loves this style?

And where to find it?

This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trousers can look bulky unless you have a good waistline I think.

I love tweed and wool and flannel and autumn colours. Not black! Although brown is sometimes hard to find. Love brown leather for boots and bags. I really want to get away from jeans and chunky boots for a change.

I think I can knit some jumpers and cardigans. But I would love a big tweedy coat. I have a couple of really nice brown tweed hats from a shop in Edinburgh who made the hats for Peaky Blinders. But I need the right sort of coat to go with them. My long cosy puffy coat is cosy but totally wrong.

Any aficionados out there?

For those of you at the country / land girl end of the spectrum you might like these British companies for bits and pieces… not cheap but well made.
Love those inspiration pics @evtheria….. right up my alley.

This is a summer dress I’ve bought this year that I’m going to try and layer with some merino wool layers and boots. I don’t normally attempt that with summer dresses but I really like the fit of the dress

What about a merino base layer underneath? Then you still get the impact of the dress? Big brown boots and a fitted jacket and I think that would look amazing 🥰

"Land girls" - yes that's a brilliant description from those of us at the country end! Although I would love to go dark, edgy and urban too.

helenahandcart78 · 20/09/2023 20:44

@Divebar2021 sorry, didn't read your post properly (too enthused by the photo) and realise I've just repeated your own thoughts on how to layer it 😁

Divebar2021 · 20/09/2023 20:55

😀

These are the boots I’ve ordered. I have also bought a “bitter chocolate” skinny polo neck from Vinted in addition to the merino from Cos I’ve just got. I need to stop spending.

@mightymalties and @helenahandcart78 I am
toodling up the road to House of Bruar in a few weeks time - it is barely an hour from me. I will report back!

Fab! We need details on sizing, lengths and creases. Bring a note book 🤣🤣

Beautiful @Divebar2021 - utterly classic and will go with everything. (She says, studiously looking away from the current account balance 😆)

MoltenLasagne · 20/09/2023 21:20

I'm very much at the Land Girl end, although my fantasy wardrobe crosses over into Edwardian / victorian gentlewoman explorer.

It's the styling details I love about DA, the tailoring and the gorgeous fabric contrasts. I don't think I could ever pull off urban so I love seeing the variety of inspiration up thread as that would never occur to me.

helenahandcart78 · 20/09/2023 21:46

@MoltenLasagne this right here "Edwardian / victorian gentlewoman explorer" is so wonderful! I'm picturing you as Emilia Earheart! (have I got the name right?) I am absolutely thrilled at the myriad of looks, vibes, attitudes and outlooks on this thread. I salute you all, fellow Questers. My aim tomorrow is to consider coats, shoes/boots and accessories - possibly with photos if I'm up to it. (Still battling night coughing - miserable 😖)

Catchasingmewithspiders · 20/09/2023 21:54

For Edwardian/Victoriana gentlewoman explorer vibes I'm totally seeing Prhyne Fisher's doctor friend Mac as inspiration

I would love to be able to pull off a hat like that! Give me 5 years of not giving a shit what other people think, and I'm all over it. ❤️

RedLem0nade · 20/09/2023 22:41

Ooh @Catchasingmewithspiders now I really want a watch chain for my waistcoat!

RedLem0nade · 20/09/2023 22:48

Am now googling Dr Mac and I think I’m in love. Is the silk tie thing she’s wearing around her neck called a cravat? I need one in my life.

She does have a good line in cravats!

I'm also in love with this waistcoat

Wow, that is some serious style inspiration! @Catchasingmewithspiders

I love a waistcoat too, although I've got a few too many practical ones at the moment rather than suave ones. I'd love to get a knitted one too. Oh, the shopping list is endless!

Phryne Fisher is worth watching for the clothes alone if you haven't already seen it

Phryne probably doesn't dress in a way that fits the thread but her wardrobe is stunning!

Really good thoughts @Divebar2021 I am definitely trying to walk a line between Miss Marple, Miss Moneypenny and Helena Bonham Carter 😂

I love this description....
...this thread is making me so happy; gorgeous clothes in exquisite fabrics, comfort and Autumn. I wore my vintage Donegal tweed jacket -first time this season -for a walk on The Lizard yesterday. Bliss. No damned sweat or bare shoulders. Chanel lipstick, oh joy.

Darkacademic · 21/09/2023 16:33

Oooooooh I have found potential trousers, thanks to the ever present eye of Facebook ads!
Tweed, skinny, flat fronted… but also tweed culottes… Whole new worlds of DA awaits!

@Darkacademic good work! I'll have a look later but on a brief skim, velvet trousers are calling to me ❤️ (Not for the dog walk though 😄)

Yes! Another fabulous style icon to add to the canon ❤️ I think being androgynous is quite a central part of this style, although of course we are all about Edwardian/Victoriana feminine looks as well. The more you dive in, the more you realise how versatile it is. I got shin high, lace up Victorian style boots with a small wineglass heel about 10-15 years ago in Clarks. Absolutely loved them til they fell apart. I think they would bridge the gap between the feminine tweed skirts/balloon sleeved blouse look, and the masculine cropped trousers and waistcoat look. So would work with lots of ideas. Anyone seen anything like them recently?
