An opportunity to discuss styling all those clothes we have on temporary loan.

@Alpacasoft Ah such a good feeling to sell stuff, I think it’s genuinely a good energy to release things that aren’t working for you and are there when you open your wardrobe making you feel guilty! I recently had a mini purge on eBay and sold 20 items - mainly clothes, some unopened make up, I made £300, immediately spent £200 on the Toast navy loop dress but feel ok about it. I’m building myself up to doing another round, it just takes a lot of energy to do it but feels so good!

Fantastic!
Do you find ebay better than Vinted?
I got so bored of ebay, fees etc

Vinted seems easier to me but probably get less money for things??
Great feeling to have a good clothes budget to actually buy something you will wear.

lordloveadog · 13/08/2023 14:06

Thank you @Noodle421! Might try it, love the colour

Saurus72 · 13/08/2023 14:29

I haven’t used Vinted - agree re: high eBay fees but I guess because I know how it works it felt easier than trying Vinted for the first time. Over the past few years I’ve changed my shopping habits - far fewer sale purchases (Toast and Jigsaw excepted mainly) so I’m really hoping that I will have fewer items that don’t work out that are need to sell. That, plus having a better understanding of what I need and want now for work - I still want really lovely clothes when I’m in the office but I also need specific wfh clothes. Working up to selling brand new in box pairs of stilettos that I really don’t think I’ll need / but keeping 4-5 pairs of favourites just in case 🙄

Snowyowl78 · 13/08/2023 14:45

I like vinted the best, you can set your price and people can make offers, I don’t like the auction format and having to count down and relist etc. The eBay fees are really high. I’ve beeen selling loads on vinted but have also bought a lot.
there is also Depop but that doesn’t get much stuff I like anymore.

faustina · 13/08/2023 14:47

@Dee1224 - I went to my local store and both the dresses I returned are still there - for the non-sale price, just like yours! I almost always order online and collect in-store because they have such a small range of sizes, and will definitely continue to do so after this!

Hold me, Toasties!
I tore my Pihu check dress yesterday dismounting from a bike, and this on the way INTO the pub so no excuses at all besides inborn clumsiness. Had to watch two whole football matches clutching my crossbody in front of the giant gaping hole perilously near my crotch area, trying to remember if I'd put anything in that pocket and fretting about the fine cotton edges fraying while all around me were preoccupied with silly things like penalties and national honour and such😓
Just completed a patch nicked from one of the ripped pocket bags, which was more of a palaver than it needed to be (seriously reevaluating my love of French seamed pockets when it comes to unpicking and reassembling).

Because the cotton is so fine I wasn't happy with anything but pinked edges on the inner patch, so god knows how durable it will be! And I'm also second-guessing myself as the results are awkwardly neither visible nor invisible mending.... would it be better to do a more defiantly contrasty patch and reinforce the insides better at the same time? Add some sashiko or other embroidery? The original tear was so wide by the time we got home I couldn't really salvage more of the check fabric for another matched patch.

I’ve only used eBay - I get the impression you can command a higher fee ( yet still fair and just) for new or very lightly worn clothing ( even after taking into account the fees). It’s been a year long project and I’ve made enough money to buy a new wardrobe ( hopefully with fewer mistakes). I’ve found it to be a very worthwhile exercise but am now bored rigid with the whole process and pleased its drawing to a close. It is time consuming when you have a reasonable amount to sell but overall very pleased I’ve done it.

Noodle421 · 13/08/2023 14:55

I’m finding items are taking slower to sell compared to this time last year. I think more more people are selling stuff and the market is saturated or people are buying less or perhaps a combination of both. I’m not sure. Has anyone else noticed this ?

To me ( a non sewer), I think that looks a brilliant repair and one you’d never notice if you didn’t know there’d been a rip. It looks like it’s not in an area that gets any undue stress so hopefully the patch will last well.

Saurus72 · 13/08/2023 15:30

@Noodle421 Wow, I admire your perseverance to stick at it for a year, it’s very time consuming! Do you know how many items you’ve sold? I tend to go at it for 2-3 weeks then I have to stop for some downtime. It’s very motivating when you see the funds piling up though.

@clowniform Ugh what an Unfortunate Incident. Agree your repair looks really good.

After a morning of yoga, grocery shopping and brunch making, I’m now reading the Sunday paper in the garden wearing PJ bottoms, French supermarket spa drilled and a floaty white shirt I bought when we were on holiday a few weeks ago, all really lovely things to wear 😊

faustina · 13/08/2023 15:33

@clowniform - how annoying that you had to spend an evening with a strategically placed bag! To my eyes that looks like a perfect patch, but I guess you could also take it to Toast and see what they suggest if you prefer something more visible? It is a beautiful dress - I remember it well

Gave away my final pair a few months ago- very liberating!

Decided I am never wearing a pair of high heels again.

I think a lot of people have moved to Vinted.
There was a thread about a DD who had 50 Vinted parcels in a week on here.😳
Tbh I CBA with the whole auction nonsense anymore and I just find the layout so clunky.

I put my few things on Vinted in about a minute, it's very use friendly.

@clowniform passes tea and tissues I feel your pain.
That's a lovely repair though.

dudsville · 13/08/2023 16:21

How annoying @clowniform but that does look like a great repair. I loved that dress so much but I tried it in all the sizes and none suited me. I wish you many more years of pihu!

Stoic123 · 13/08/2023 16:43

I sell on eBay (Buy now option only and when 80% off sellers fees). I price fairly so don't enable 'Make an offer' option but have done a discount for someone who bought 3 items. Things have sold quickly (longest took 10 days).

I've not used Vinted as, like @Saurus72, I'm used to eBay now. I only sell things that will go for at least £20 as I still want to give some reasonable stuff to charity.

I have bought from Vinted, Depop and eBay but am starting to cut down on buying preloved clothes. Tired of having to resell and would rather save the money for Toast sales.

Noodle421 · 13/08/2023 16:43

@Saurus72 Like you, I’ve sold in bursts, mostly my stuff but also items such as unworn rugby boots, mens clothes, unopened make up, unwanted light fittings etc - around 170 items in total, many in excellent condition with great re sale value (wrong size/style/colour for me) and so I’ve managed to save quite a bit (now spent !) The whole strategic planning of a new wardrobe, searching online for items that go together in a style I like and that fit, listing items, numerous post office trips has been more mentally and physically time consuming/draining than I expected. I’m shutting up shop soon. Anything that doesn’t sell by beginning of September I will be donating to charity. Overall it’s been a worthwhile and satisfying experience. I just need a break which is just as well as I have very little left to sell. Fingers crossed this wardrobe will serve me better than the last. There’s certainly a lot more thought gone into it this time round.

Noodle421 · 13/08/2023 16:49

@Alpacasoft i can’t be bothered with auction either. I price an item at an amount I believe to be fair and just and don’t allow offers. Most of my items have sold quickly which has made me wonder whether I’m pricing too low but I’ve decided to trust my gut instinct. I seem to know when I’ve under valued an item and will adjust accordingly.

Dee1224 · 13/08/2023 17:24

Thanks for checking out the TK Maxx situation @faustina! I am hoping my online order is more successful than my in person visit.

I am currently stuck in traffic on the way up north to visit a sick family member. The weather is miserable, chilly and it’s trying to rain. The sun and warmth had finally appeared at home so I am not best pleased 🙃

Dee1224 · 13/08/2023 17:30

I am wearing my red floral pj top as I managed to throw food all down my lovely white blouse en route to the car, meaning I had to run back in and grab the first thing to hand as OH was getting annoyed.

It didn’t look too out of place in brilliant sunshine and 24 degrees this morning. I feel a bit daft wearing it whilst stuck in traffic on the M6 huddled under my anorak for warmth 🤣

mizu · 13/08/2023 17:32

I am enjoying using Vinted but have only bought from there and not sold. Bits and pieces for hols and a couple of TOAST things.

I have a few things on eBay (TOAST, YMC, COS) at the moment but they haven't sold as quickly as usual. Once I've decided I'm selling something, that's it, no going back.

The TOAST green dress is gorgeous.

Noodle421 · 13/08/2023 17:34

@Dee1224 I’m sure you look very beautiful with your red florals in all the drab weather. Sorry to hear about your sick relative. Wishing a speedy recovery X

Dee1224 · 13/08/2023 17:49

Thanks @Noodle421 - the traffic is moving 😄

faustina · 12/08/2023 21:04

@PretLea - the sizing for what?

@faustina sorry should have clarified - the whistles jumper. I only have a pair of their barrel jeans so was just wondering about their tops. But I’m guessing tts.

Laska2Meryls · 13/08/2023 19:29

I have some stuff to sell .. but talking to a friend about Vinted today it seems that they dont release your money until after the buyer has left feedback to say its ok ? ... This worries me...what if the buyer doesn't feedback ? I have had problems when I have sold on ebay - even when its new with tags stuff just because the buyer doesn't like it .. even had stuff returned damaged and ebay has sided with purchaser..

Its a lesson to not get over invested in Toast sale for me and only keep stuff that I really really love..

Then again I have obsessed about buying something and then not worn it .. my last wardrobe cull has now left me with 5 Toast things to sell in that category!🤦‍♀️ ( Inc unworn two Pihu and a black white wool check skirts - both of which I obsessed over and finally bought only to find them again recently and wonder why I ever bought them .. I dont wear skirts at all now I have finished working..)

Alpacasoft · 13/08/2023 20:19

@Laska2Meryls
There is a button that you click to either say everything is OK or to raise an issue once you receive the item.
I like it -easy to raise a refund if there's an issue.
If they fail to click at all the money goes through after 2 days automatically.
Feedback is a separate thing.
If they don't leave feedback then you get a 5* and transaction completed feedback.
To me it's far better than the feedback thing ebay had where people could leave you a negative review just for querying an item.
Far better buyer protection
