Thread to discuss and compare 2023 Beauty Advent contents. Started because Liberty has already published their contents.

It's interesting that they're opening pre-orders so early this year. F&M always used to be first in August. I guess they think that they're more likely to sell out if they release early.

Harrods was fantastic last year, but they released so late that people had already bought their calendars and they ended up having to reduce them. Clearly they've learnt their lesson and decided to release super early this year. Although it seems a bit bonkers to sending them out 3 months before advent!

Babysharkdoodoodood · 03/08/2023 12:02

Just pre-ordered the Harrods fragrance calendar. This is (probably) the only one I'll get this year.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 03/08/2023 12:03

Harrods appeals but I don't think they ship beauty stuff to the EU.

Pet hates:
Black eye liner
Hair masks that you leave in for ages after washing hair and then rinse.
Eye palettes - I have way too many and don't use them that often
Make-up brushes/sponges. I have as many as I need.
Black mascara. I have a lifetime's supply in my stash. I would be happy to get brown though.
Nail varnish.
Gimmicky nonsense like gua shas or jade rollers.

I really like the much hated This Works pillow spray

Blossomtoes · 03/08/2023 12:03

I think the early preorders are a guide to production volumes. They know demand is going to be much lower this year and don’t want lots of stock left on their hands.

AprilLady · 03/08/2023 12:11

@Blossomtoes that was my take too - that the pre-orders are a very useful way of testing demand so that they can decide on volumes, given last year’s experience.

Also, it brings the cash in earlier. Now that interest rates have gone up significantly, cash management will be much more critical for the retailers, so getting the cash in early is I expect very helpful for them.

MidnightMeltdown · 03/08/2023 12:16

Good point @Blossomtoes

I guess this means that we're unlikely to see reductions on these calendars this year

redredwineub40 · 03/08/2023 12:19

I don’t mind bader in calendars - but it is overpriced. Love Elemis, I agree though that I’m bored of seeing marine - they seem to want people to have their gateway bestseller products though don’t they which is why you always see that one.

roller balls and pillow sprays hang around for ages in drawers.

I should’ve sold old ACs - hands down the F&M is the most festive

SoloCat · 03/08/2023 13:14

I’ve ordered the Harrods fragrance calendar, although I’m not sure on the beauty calendar, might be too many DOD’s for me.
Ren AHA I’ve got several bottles stashed and I never use it.
AB…can’t believe how much it retails for considering it’s in every calendar! The only way it works for me is mixing it with the AB oil.
Now I’m older and past it the only thing I’d really like to try is the Elemis night cream. Evidens is for combo skin…I need moisturising 😁

It’s all a bit dull…I’d love some new and exciting products. Never had the F&M one, but might spend my money on a LED mask instead, but then I may get FOMO and need to order one 😳

RotundRuby · 03/08/2023 13:33

As someone who doesn't rate the Ren tonic and has had loads of it, I've used it all up on my body. As an AHA it's great on armpits, elbows, knees and soles of the feet. That plus a good foot cream a few times a week does wonders for dry heels.

MavisMcMinty · 03/08/2023 13:36

I’m more tempted by Harrods than Liberty and the Elemis cream is their Overnight Matrix, which costs a FORTUNE and I’ve only ever been able to afford it as part of a QVC TSV.

What is the Harrods “My Beauty” thing, by the way? Is it another subscription service, or loyalty club?

AprilLady · 03/08/2023 13:39

@MavisMcMinty “My Beauty” is just a loyalty club, no fees involved. So there is no downside to joining it other than getting periodic marketing emails from them.

MidnightMeltdown · 03/08/2023 14:00

The Decree serum in Harrods is pricey too, and has good reviews. Wouldn't mind trying that

The lipgloss would be a DoD for me. Not sure about the lipstick shade. I can wear red, but that one looks super bright.

SoloCat · 03/08/2023 14:07

Thanks for the tips@RotundRuby I’ll give it a go, otherwise I’ll just end up putting them in the recycling…such a waste!

JoeyRamonesHair · 03/08/2023 09:12

Anyone have major calendar pet hates?

Mine are:

Augustinus Bader
Elemis Marine Cream
Black eyeliners

Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum cream.

I give it to DD, who loves it. But what I'd prefer to do is kick it into the sun so I never have to smell it again.

BrokeAsABone · 03/08/2023 14:51

I don't mind getting eyeliners as I wear them a lot. Every day and top up a couple of times a day too so they wear down very quickly.

My DoD are Nars Orgasm, anything by Avant, anything by Doctors Formula as I also think it's a mediocre brand with a massively inflated price, palettes bigger than my make up bag, nail varnish and face oils - they make my face feel slimy.

PurpleGreenandWhiteAreTheNewPrimaryColours · 03/08/2023 16:36

I've just preorderd the Liberty one.

With my beauty drop funds, £10 off for BD members and a £10 voucher I got it down from 250 to 110.

I don't intend to wait til December before opening it

BrokeAsABone · 03/08/2023 16:39

That's a really good deal Purple!

I pre ordered the Harrods fragrance one - I'm thinking of ordering it for my friend who only owns just a tiny bit of perfume at the bottom of one little bottle but whose husband complains if she says she would like more. (He's the breadwinner and seems to think that means he gets more of a say). She was my flat mate for years and LOVES perfume. It could be a joint birthday and Christmas present.

You'd be better off getting her a new husband for Xmas

Or maybe 24, all lined up behind doors, so she can choose a decent one

BrokeAsABone · 03/08/2023 17:35

Purple...you're so right! He's horrible. We don't get on at all because he's so petty to her. I actually booted him out of my house in their last visit as he was slagging her off so much and I couldn't bear it. Shouted at him to eff off out of my house.

I've ordered it for her and wrote a nice message to go along with it. I think she'll love it.😀

WhatCameFirstTheChickenOrTheDickhead · 03/08/2023 17:45

I've just remembered I fancied Next last year but thought it was £20-30 overpriced so was hoping for a discount but it remained full price until the bitter end. I wonder if they will bring it back 1/2 price this year like they did with the 2021 calendar last year. It had lots of good products and some I really want to try but teeny sizes which I don't mind if it's the right price point, but this wasn't.

EasterIssland · 03/08/2023 17:46

Is there a link for harrods? I can’t find it on the website

TheDuchessOfMN · 03/08/2023 17:56

@EasterIssland It’s on the beauty advent calendar. net website

Stoic123 · 03/08/2023 18:40

Harrods main one is a maybe for me - I love the EGF, the Push Up Mascara, AA Bath Oil (why same one as last year?) and I quite like Overnight Matrix (would not pay RP though).

A few old chestnuts.

My hates- Gua Sha, Rollerball, Ren AHA, Black Eyeliner. Barbara Sturm (never impressd)
My loves- Bath oils, Serums, Candles, Blushers/Highlighters/Bronzers,

Love push up mascara - Elemis lovers should sign up directly with them as they run decent gifts with, money off and kits with matrix in, I’ve had an account for a year and a few good offers.

Nearlyadoctor · 03/08/2023 19:26

viques · 02/08/2023 17:25

@Nearlyadoctor

have you had an email about this years F and M ? I haven’t had mine yet, and am champing at the bit!

@viques - no I haven’t had anything from F&M regarding this years calendar
