What soggy weather here (North England).

I was going to wear a viscose dress for Day 23 of July challenge but it's going to be the the new Checked Cotton Cashmere Dress to make the most of lounging around.

Dee1224 · 23/07/2023 10:29

Morning, Toasties.

I have an archive question. I bought a stripy tee dress from eBay - it’s quite old, but in good condition- from the days when Toast used to do short dresses!

My question is: Is the grey ribbing meant to be seen along the neck, or do I need to try sewing it - badly - to get it out of sight?

At the moment, the grey ribbing will NOT stay flat/hidden, which led me to think perhaps it’s supposed to be seen.

Thanks

Just realised I have also shared a pic of one of my mum’s 1970s hangers - still going strong and kept for sentimental value😂

Perfect choice @Stoic123

Ahhh, the crocheted hanger. My aunt used to do those and I'm sorry I don't have any.

Today's miserable weather home outfit is the stack check with... the black boatneck. I've got to make myself wear it so that I can wash it!

mizu · 23/07/2023 11:12

Speaking of archive TOAST, wearing this delightful swimsuit by the pool.

I am wearing my new round collared tee - Moss - aka brown! Lovely, but a bit big. Would have looked good under the Fairisle tank I returned 🙃

Dee1224 · 23/07/2023 11:14

Very nice @mizu

Stoic123 · 23/07/2023 11:19

@mizu - fab!

Dee1224 · 23/07/2023 11:25

Having a little debate with myself about whether to trek to a Toast shop today…

Stoic123 · 23/07/2023 11:54

@Dee1224 - in answer to your tee question. Sorry - not been buying Toast long enough. Like the hanger!

Noodle421 · 23/07/2023 11:57

@Dee1224 I’m guessing the grey trim is supposed to be seen ?

Loving seeing pics of old Toast being worn. You’ve all inspired me to wear this dress from many seasons ago ( not today - too cold)

Noodle421 · 23/07/2023 12:04

@dudsville I think you may have mentioned ( many posts ago ) that you are wary about buying garment dyed linen? Is there a reason for this or is it just a personal preference issue? I’ve been meaning to ask you for ages. I now have a couple of pieces and am wondering if I should take extra extra care with washing etc ( eg in cold water perhaps) in case it fades badly etc. Neither item has been washed yet. Apologies if I have the wrong person or got the wrong end of the stick !

Dee1224 · 23/07/2023 12:17

Thanks @Stoic123 and @Noodle421

Nice dress @Noodle421!

Saurus72 · 23/07/2023 12:52

Ah I really like the wearing Toast pics! This green dress is one of the hardest working in my wardrobe, it’s about 3 years old now and I also have it in the ‘black olive’ colour. I wear it pretty much year-round, in the winter with either a cashmere cardi or fair isle jumper and knee boots. It’s looking good still, if a little ‘worn in’, but it’s the dress I get really worried about becoming too old because it would leave a massive hole in my wardrobe.

Here are my two latest Emma tee dye projects, were chalk , now dark green and tulip red.. had waited for Toast to do more colours but ended up doing them myself! ...

(They are both the same size and length, its just that the hangers are different )

Love the red @Laska2Meryls . I have one on chalk which is a terrible colour on me, I can’t remember why I didn’t return it 🤷‍♀️. May attempt to dye (have used Dylon washing machine dye before) but am a leetle scared about the washing machine.

Stoic123 · 23/07/2023 13:09

@Laska2Meryls - I am so regretting selling a chalk tee (like @Saurus72 didn't suit) now that I have seen yours.

Laska2Meryls · 23/07/2023 13:09

Thats Dylon Tulip red @Saurus72 ..
I just wipe around the inner of the door seal with a few bits of kitchen roll afterwards which usually does collect a little of colour but comes off easily...and then run a full cycle empty with detergent afterwards.. I have never had any problems with colour transfer in all the times I have been dyeing stuff .. (but to make certain If I can do a dark towel or jeans wash for the first wash after, I do ) .

Found you again, goodness how these threads fly! My sales swan song was the lotus leaf gown, the last one in size L. I have numerous (well, far too many to count gowns but I have latterly realised that, even though I’m a size 10/12 and a medium in Toast, I prefer the comfort of having extra fabric to wrap around me, plus a good couple of extra inches in length as well). I cheekily added a Toast geranium soap block to take my spend above £150, including one full-price item, to qualify for the Moira Frith print. I’m astonished to see that Toast has honoured the purchase and my package, including the print, is arriving tomorrow.

The highlights of the sale for me were barrel leg dungarees in indigo in ecru, although I’m yet to wear the latter due to the incessant rain. The ecru is a radical move for me as I don’t like dirt or stains on my clothes (neurodiverse) but I think it was @dudsville who wrote about the loveliness of the patina of (dirt) everyday wear so I am going to try to embrace this!

I am also loving my soap gift set which featured a ceramic soap dish (I don’t know how long this will survive my Wreck-it-Ralph children), plus a soap block and a knitted wash cloth, all for the price of the dish. I adore Toast ceramics and I’m building up quite a collection now.

The children and I are off to West Wales clamping for a fortnight next week (wish me luck in this weather 😱) so I am hoping to factor in a trip to Llandeilo.

dudsville · 23/07/2023 13:56

@Dee1224 I think it's meant to be seen.

Enjoying seeing some of the old prints. Someone recently posted about being bored of check and missing the old prints. I like the checks, so this is my time, but it's fun to see what they used to do.

@Noodle421 , it's not a concern for the fabric, I just don't like the look on me. I'm sure yours will eb fabulours if you like the material!

Fab dress @Saurus72 , I'm anxious for you too!

@Laska2Meryls , I'm highly annoyed that your dye job has worked so incredibly well. I tried to do that with some chalk tees last year and the thread showed through. I know some like that but I do not. Why did yours dye so well and mine keep the thread colour? I even wrote to toast to ask them what kind of thread they used before I dyed them. And I toongue in cheek title my email "A question of composition"!!!!!

Hi @smaug, it's been a while! It wasn't me that wrote poetically about the patina, but I also bought the ecrue barrel leg dungarees, it's also a radical move for me, but one that brings me a lot of happiness!

mizu · 23/07/2023 14:20

@Saurus72 I have that dress too in the black olive and have worn to death too.

faustina · 23/07/2023 14:45

@Laska2Meryls - beautiful dye jobs! I have one Emma tee which I dyed navy and I don't think the threads came up white on it either @dudsville , though those on the linen boy tee did (and I quite like those). I wonder why yours did?

It is lovely to see all the vintage-y Toast things. @Saurus72 - I love that dress - what is the fabric?

@SmaugMum - I took that sizing approach to a piece of Toast nightwear once - it was a sort of kaftan gown thing with a hood? It was so long I tripped and fell down the stairs so that was a big fat fail

Dee1224 · 23/07/2023 15:24

Thanks @dudsville - I didn’t fancy trying to sew it down!

Saurus72 · 23/07/2023 16:19

@faustina I just checked the fabric and it’s 65% cupro/35% viscose. It’s actually dry clean only but I don’t believe in dry cleaning anything apart from coats and suits so it’s been washed at 30 degrees - all fine.
