What's the one thing you've done for years and years which you'd never go without?

OP posts:

Hot and flashy also filters and edits now unless I'm very much mistaken, and I don't think I am.

tillyandmilly · 14/07/2023 23:13

Sadly not everyone can achieve a high powered job - I have a learning disability so cannot achieve the high paid salaried position- but I do have a job albeit very low paid one to which I will be doing until I receive my state pension and even then will have to continue working to keep a roof over my head 🫤

Moisturiser. I'd drink it if I could.

KnittedCardi · 14/07/2023 23:21

For those in their fifties now, we didn't have high spf, or fancy creams, or Botox, so those that look good, it's mostly genetics, a good diet and maybe some HRT.

PickAChew · 14/07/2023 23:25

I spf may to September, though and on sunny days either side. I am so fair my skin is blue.

Train yourself not to use your forehead or smile too expressively. Natural botox. My mother trained me from a really young age not to wrinkle my forehead or smile too enthusiastically! It worked both for her and me.

Korean sheet masks
Origins Vitazing.
Don't go grey!
Stay out of the sun.
Dewy foundation.

I’ve gone from mousy brown to platinum grey naturally. It makes me look much better that the brown, lights up my face and I sometimes get asked what colour I’ve used or who does my hair.

That is quite sad.

@peachesandcream2021 RE HRT, I use oestrogen gel only. I don’t have a uterus, so don’t need progesterone.
RE sunscreen. That’s two hours of CONTINUOUS sun exposure. Most people don’t flop down and roast for two hours. Maybe if swimming and sun lounging, but THAT’s when you keep religiously applying. Personally, I avoid both because I live in Aus and I hate the burning feeling of the sun. Always have. There are a billion fantastic and enjoyable sunscreen formulations these days. (Massive fan of Korean sunscreens).

Agree with a pp that this is sad. It's the young age I think, too. Though there's a lot of truth in it, obviously. I'm not very smiley and don't have any signs of ageing around my eyes or mouth.

I did have minimal frown lines but trained myself not to do that (after Botox help which means I only have it every six months).

Sleep of course, if only it was so easy. Insomniac here.

wakeuporswim · 15/07/2023 01:59

You do see stage actors and dancers with premature lines, because of their expressive faces also.

So avoid those professions Wink

Definitely
Don't get me wrong, skincare is like a hobby for me and I love makeup

But reading this thread I was thinking how many men are wondering about "very low carbs, good quality makeup, colouring their hair" etc etc

FindingMeno · 15/07/2023 03:01

I don't wear makeup and haven't for years.
It feels to me that the more stuff you put on your skin ( barring a moisturiser that suits you), the more stuff you need to put on your skin.

slapdashsusie · 15/07/2023 04:15

I started sleeping on a silk pillowcase a few years ago and I do feel like it is less harsh on my cheeks than cotton- I sleep on my side so my face is smushed into a pillow all night. It also keeps my hair smoother.
post menopause I couldn’t find a moisturiser that was “heavy” enough, I have always been an Estée Lauder girl but found I was dry by lunchtime no matter how much money I spent (I should add I have sundamaged australian skin) so now I just rub in some of The Ordinary rosehip oil over the top of my moisturiser and that gives me the oomph my moisturiser can’t give anymore.

HRT patches haven’t made any difference to my skin- I tell people I use it for heart health blah blah but I was secretly hoping my skin would magically perk up- sadly not :)

Bookist · 17/07/2023 22:23

I see looking groomed and attractive as just another form of currency really. I am firmly middle aged but I know I get taken more seriously and get more positive attention than most of my friends who are now visually fading away. My best tips (if you can be arsed).

Firm pillow with real silk pillowcase.
Teeth professionally straightened and whitened.
Brows professionally shaped.
UK Lash serum every night
Simple skincare, but use it religiously
Regular pedicures
Look after your hands
Good posture
Keep your weight down
Smile

motleymop · 17/07/2023 22:30

Oh I don't know about all this no alcohol business. Have a bit of fun, I say, and don't get old before your time.
I probably look about 100 and just kidding myself...oh well.

yesterdayisgone · 17/07/2023 22:33

Botox 😀

motleymop · 17/07/2023 22:35

@GarlicGrace can I be your friend please?

God that's sad.

I'd rather smile and laugh as much and as enthusiastically as I feel like and have an extra wrinkle, than not.

Fraaahnces · 18/07/2023 00:47

She sounds fun 😖

GarlicGrace · 18/07/2023 01:24

Well, that article gave me lots of wrinkle-inducing laughs!

The non-scowling Christine does look pretty good at 70. Non-smiling Tess, however, looks exactly her age. True, she has very few lines but she's sagging quite a bit - doesn't smiling work the muscles that hold up your lower face?

I mean, mine's fallen down despite all the smiling. But I definitely wasn't as droopy as Mona Tess at 50.
